Do Australian Terriers shed?
Yes, Australian Terriers shed moderately. They have a double coat consisting of a coarse, straight outer coat and a soft, dense undercoat. Living in Australia’s diverse climate, from intensely hot summers to cooler winters, meant these terriers needed to be resilient. Their rough, double coat helps to protect against a range of weather conditions.
Australian Terriers need to be brushed weekly and trimmed every few months around the ears, paws, and tail, as well as hand-stripped to help rid the coat of excess, shedded hair that becomes caught in the outer coat. A slicker brush or a comb designed for double coats works well for this purpose. During seasonal changes in the spring and fall, when shedding might increase, more frequent brushing and hand-plucking of dead hair may be needed.
