Name: Mila Best Guess for Breed: Australian Shepherd mix, with some other type of shepherd Best Guess for Age: 2 years as of December 2024 Gender: Female Approximate Weight: 45 lbs Gets Along With:Other dogs! We haven't seen her with kids or cats but she can be tested if you have them Currently Living At: Lucky Dog's South Carolina rescue campus; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to come up after completing heartworm treatment Special Adoption Considerations: Mila is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. She's eagerly looking forward to having her own humans again. Long sniffy walks, romps in the park, all those adventures to burn off that awesome young-dog energy - yes, please! She'd also love to go to dog school to show how super smart she is. What she wants most of all, though, is to know she's safe and loved and under her own roof.
