Story
Meet Penny Formerly Known as Porsia: Ready for Her Forever Home! Hi, I'm Penny! I'm just over 1 year old, around 40 pounds, and I recently made my way up from Texas with my adorable puppies. I was a great mama, but now that my pups are weaned, it's my turn to find a forever family to call my own! I may be part Australian Shepherd or Kelpie—whatever my mix, one thing's for sure: I'm stunning! With one blue eye and one brown eye, I’m quite the head-turner. In my foster home, I live with kids and another dog, and I absolutely love them both. I’m still young, so sometimes I get a little too excited and jump up, but my foster family is helping me work on that. I'm doing great with potty training—when I go outside, I do my business right away. I love toys and playing fetch! I’ll bring the ball back to you every time, ready for another throw. I’m also super affectionate; I enjoy giving kisses and cuddling up on the couch. At night and during the day when my foster family is out, I rest in my crate. I might whine for a couple of minutes when I first go in, but I quickly settle down and sleep peacefully through the night. I’d love to find a family of my own—hopefully just in time for the holidays. If you’re looking for a loving, playful, and beautiful companion, I’m your girl. Let’s make this season one to remember. Ready to meet Penny? Fill out an application and make her dream of a forever home come true! Our standard adoption fee is $375 cash or check and $385 credit card ($10 processing fee). . It includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at our participating vets, age appropriate core vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative,1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, and micro-chipping. While he hasn’t started leash or crate training yet, he’s used to being in a penned area when his foster family is away or at bedtime. Shelby is very food-motivated and eager to learn. With patience and guidance, he will pick up new skills quickly. Shelby has never met a stranger. His friendly nature makes him a favorite with everyone, and he’s been well-socialized in his foster home, living with three dogs of various sizes and ages. Shelby is a 9-week-old mix breed puppy with a stunning sable coat and captivating eyes that look almost too perfect to be real—but they are! Weighing 13 pounds, Shelby is ready to bring joy and energy to a loving family. Shelby’s Journey: Born on Halloween, Shelby and his siblings had a challenging start to life. Like any young puppy, Shelby is still learning the ropes of house manners. He’s started using pee pads but isn’t fully potty trained yet. Crate and leash training are also works in progress. Socialization and Personality: Shelby hasn’t met a stranger yet—his friendly nature makes him a hit with everyone he meets. Story
Meet Aston – Your Future Snuggle Buddy and Playmate! Age: 9 weeks Weight: 12 pounds Breed: Herding Mix Hi there! I’m Aston, a sweet and laid-back puppy searching for my perfect forever family. Could that be you? My Story: I’ve had a rough start in life. My siblings and I were born on Halloween on the streets of Texas. Our mom, barely more than a puppy herself, was underweight and struggled to survive on scraps. Thankfully, a kind lady found us shortly after we were born and brought us to a shelter. From there, Safe Haven stepped in, and at just nine days old, we made the journey to Illinois. For the past 8 weeks, my foster family has taken wonderful care of me, and now I’m ready to find my forever home. About Me: I’m the more laid-back sibling in my litter but still have the energy and playfulness you’d expect from a puppy. I love to play fetch, tug-of-war, or just enjoy a good snuggle session. My foster mom says my chocolate brown eyes are my secret weapon for winning hearts! What I’m Working On: Potty Training: I’m using pee pads in my foster home but will need help mastering potty training. Crate and Leash Training: I haven’t started crate or leash training yet, but I’m ready to learn with your guidance. The Perfect Home for Me: Kids: I’d love to be part of a family with children. I enjoy snuggles, tail-wagging greetings, and gentle playtime. Other Dogs: I’d do great in a home with another dog. My foster home has three dogs of different sizes and ages, and I love learning from them. Active Lifestyle: While I’m laid-back compared to my siblings, I still enjoy playtime and would thrive with a family that gives me fun activities and love. Why I’m Special: At 9 weeks old and 12 pounds, my foster mom thinks I’ll grow to be a large medium-sized dog. I’ve got a calm and loving personality, and I’m eager to please. I’ll be the perfect addition to a family that’s ready to help me learn and grow into a wonderful companion. A Gentle Reminder: Puppies like me need someone who’s patient, caring, and willing to invest time in training and socialization. Positive reinforcement, consistency, and patience are the keys to raising a happy, well-adjusted pup. If I sound like the perfect match for your family, don’t wait! Send your application to Safe Haven today—I can’t wait to meet you! Our standard adoption fee is $375 cash or check and $385 credit card ($10 processing fee). . Story
Fanny is a playful purebred Mini Australian Shepherd we got from a pet store last May. A week later, she was diagnosed with pneumonia. After a couple of months on antibiotics and rest, she fully recovered and has a clean bill of health, with vet records to prove it. Fanny loves belly rubs, playing with our toddler and cats, zoomies in the backyard, and walks. She isn’t potty trained yet due to her rough start and an unexpected promotion I received two months after getting her, which has required frequent travel since summer. Juggling work, a toddler, and a puppy has been too much for me. We care deeply about her and are committed to finding the perfect home. If you’re an active family with a fenced yard and experience training puppies, we’d love to hear from you!

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Remington is a Australian Shepherd mix who turns 11 in Jan 2025.  He would do best in an active home or with a "job".  He knows all of his commands and will proudly show you all his tricks for a treat.  He has a great coat that is easy to manage compared to most Aussie's and is a sweet heart for grooming.  Remington needs to be in a home without small kids, he has had little exposure to kids and can be reactive to quick motions.  We do believe with time and training he can work through it.  Once he has adjusted he becomes a cuddle bug.  He has lived with other dogs his whole life but can be selective of new dogs.  He does not seem interested in cats but to our knowledge has never lived with them.  He is fixed, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped.   His adoption fee is $400 To adopt Remington, email us at kakf3133@gmail.comVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.February 2, 2025, 9:57 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Don't let the gray hair fool you, Jazzy is full of energy and loves to give hugs.  She is very well mannered and loves to go for walks and play but also enjoys naptime in the afternoon.  She is very protective of her people and has a little bit of resource guarding with other dogs so we recommend that she is an only pet.  And while she would probably be fine with kids we recommend older kids.  She has never met a cat though so we don't know about those.  She is housebroken, crate trained, knows her basic commands, and does great in the car and on the leash.  She would love a nice place to retire in.   Her adoption fee is $400 To adopt Jazzy, email us at kakf3133@gmail.comVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.February 2, 2025, 9:57 pm

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Luna is a very sweet, senior girl who lost her long time home when her owner passed away and then stayed at a kennel for a while and has been in a foster home and adopted twice.  She is very friendly and well mannered and the returns were no fault of her own.  One she was chasing the chickens (probably no cats or small animals either), the second was because after only 2 weeks she was not bonding with her new people.  She will need a very patient and understanding home that will give her the time she needs to acclimate.  She does well on walks but also LOVES just chilling on the couch with you.  She is housebroken, crate trained, does great in the car as well, knows her commands, all around great dog. Story
Adamo is a stunning 1-year-old Australian Shepherd mix with a heart as big as his potential! Though initially shy and skittish, he has made incredible progress in just a few days in his foster home and continues to gain confidence with patience and kindness. He thrives with a calm, steady approach and does best when given time to warm up. Once he trusts you, he enjoys gentle chin scratches and will happily stay by your side. He’s already been on several outings to places like Petco and Home Depot, meeting new people and learning that the world isn’t so scary after all. This smart and gentle boy is highly treat-motivated and doing great with training—he’s already picking up "sit," "come," and leash manners. He’s crate-trained, house-trained (with only a couple of accidents while adjusting), and loves going on long daily walks. Adamo has even shown some agility potential, confidently navigating park equipment and balancing on curbs for fun! He’s a fantastic car passenger, a quiet companion, and a champion napper. With the right loving, patient home, Adamo will continue to flourish and become the best adventure buddy or cozy cuddle companion you could ask for! For more information, email info@ahconnects.org or call us at 847-697-2880 x: 0, and the staff will be happy to help you. Our dogs and puppies go home spayed/neutered, microchipped, heartworm tested (7 months and over), and up to date on core vaccines, heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives. Their adoption also includes a free-vet exam at one of our participating veterinarians.
