Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.MeeMaw is our new senior pup at Safe Haven - and we are all IN LOVE with this special girl!MeeMaw originally came into the Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control shelter in early February as a stray and this is where she got her awesome name!  She really pulled at our heartstrings and when the shelter asked us for help, we just couldn't say no to MeeMaw!  She is estimated to be around 8 years, so on the early edge of her 'senior years' and still has a fun zest for life yet ........ just like all the Golden Girls!  We actually think MeeMaw is a classic 'Golden Girl' grandma,  but haven't quite figured out yet if she is the sweet goofy Rose, the fun-loving spontaneous Southern Belle Blanche, the intelligent quick-witted Dorothy, or the spicy matriarch Sophia!!!MeeMaw is now spayed, fully vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, and on monthly flea/tick/heartworm preventatives.  The shelter staff in Cedar Rapids guessed that she is an American Bulldog/Lab mix due to her large size - as she currently weighs 91 pounds. During her intake exam the veterinarian did find MeeMaw to be deaf, and at times seems like she may have a little vision impairment too, as well as a double ear infection and possible allergies.  Luckily the treatment she received at the Cedar Rapids shelter seems to be helping.  She s looking much better and her ear infection has resolved - but regular ear cleaning will be helpful to keep her ears comfortable and healthy.  We are happy to report that she rode well in the car, and while she does get excited and pull on the leash when walking inside the building - she does much better once outside and especially if wearing a harness on long walks where she can acutally be quite a pleasant companion! After MeeMaw gets settled into Safe Haven we will be dog and cat testing her to help us figure out what type of home will be best for her.  We will also have some tips and a book for MeeMaw's adopter that explain how to successfully care for a deaf dog.  Interested in adopting this pet? Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Porkchop!! This handsome dude is around 4 years old, and 60 pounds of personality! Porkchop is seeking a super stable home, with an experienced dog owner.  He can be your couch potato partner if you bribe him with belly rubs, or your backyard companion helping to rid the yard of birds and squirrels (and tennis balls, too!).  Porkchop is super food motivated, so it was easy to train him to sit and we know he'll do great learning lots of other new commands.  He loves to be with his person, and can be somewhat standoffish with new people or situations.  Porkchop will need to be your only dog in the home, or possibly paired with a very docile and confident larger female dog.  Pushy or over friendly dogs don't mesh well with his personality.  No kids or cats for Porkchop, please! Porkchop can be  a vocal dog, he will talk and grumble at you to let you know what he's thinking - we think it’s pretty cute!  Porkchop's adoption fee is $250 and includes his neuter, microchip and current vaccinations and preventatives PLUS a free basic obedience course at Cedar Run Company in Hiawatha.  Last Hope requires that potential adopters current animals be altered, current on vaccinations and preventatives and be kept as indoor pets only.  Our adoption process includes reference and background checks, a vet check and a home visit.  Please submit an adoption application for consideration through our website.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 4, 2024, 6:20 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Hoagie!! We just love this smushy faced boy, he needs an owner who will help him to grow his confidence in the world; introduce him to new experiences and provide slow social introductions to other dogs and people.  We don't know Hoagie's full background, but it's clear he was badly injured before joining Last Hope.  His back end is weak, and x-rays have shown old injuries that have since fused.  Hoagie does take prescription medicine for this and will need to continue on this long-term for pain/joint management. Hoagie might be a fit with another young, playful dog around his size or he would love to be your #1 guy.  He is not a fit with small dogs and is also not a fit with children under 16. He doesn't mind cats, as long as they have their own dedicated space should they want a break from him. Hoagie will love playing in your fenced in back yard, and then cuddling on the couch...but be warned, he's a snorer! Hoagie can be very wary of men, so he needs a patient and kind owner who is prepared for introducing him slowly to new people.    Hoagie's adoption fee is $250 and includes his neuter, microchip, current vaccinations and preventatives plus a FREE basic obedience course at Cedar Run Pet Boarding in Hiawatha.  Last Hope requires that all animals be kept as indoor pets only, be altered and current on vaccinations and preventatives. Our adoption process includes reference and background checks, a vet check and a home visit as well as multiple meet and greets for dogs.
