While a fenced-in yard isn’t a must, Nova would certainly love a safe outdoor space to play and enjoy some fresh air. What kind of home would be best for me? Nova will thrive in a variety of living situations, whether in a house or apartment. She’ll fit right into any household—whether you're a single person, a couple, or a family. If you have kids, she would do best with children aged 10 and up who can be gentle and respectful. Nova would also be happy with another dog, as long as they’re calm and not overly energetic. However, she would likely prefer to be the only dog, so she can be the center of your world! Nova is a total lovebug! She adores people and gets along well with other dogs that are calm and respectful. While she hasn’t interacted with cats yet, she shows no signs of aggression, and if your cats are comfortable with her, she’s sure to be just fine. What is my personality like? Say hello to Nova, a sweet and loving Shih Tzu girl who is eagerly searching for her forever home. Nova came to us as an owner surrender, and she's used to living in a loving home where she’s cherished. Now, she’s ready to find her new family! Nova is an affectionate little companion who loves to be around people. She enjoys spending time with you and will let you know if you’re not giving her enough attention—she’ll gently place her front paws on your leg, as if saying, “Hey, I’m down here! I need some love!” Her favorite place in the world is in your lap, and if she can’t get there, she’ll happily settle next to you on the couch. Though we’re still learning if she knows commands or how well she walks on a leash, Nova is eager to please and should pick up on training quickly. Spending time working with her will not only help her learn but also create a strong bond between you. How do I act when I first meet new people? Loving. Nova will eagerly approach you for pets and will jump into your lap if you allow it. Expect her to jump up and place her front paws on your legs as her way of saying, “Hey, I’m down here and I need your attention and loving.” She simply loves being close to you! Other tips and tidbits: We don't know Nova's exact birthdate.  Her owner did not, either.  Records at her previous vet show an estimated birthdate of 11/23/2017. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule if a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.  A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Please note that when screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home.   You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, color, age, etc.  Others here may be a better fit for you.  It is very difficult to get to know a living animal from a picture and a short description.  Since we are constantly getting in new dogs, this may be a  dog not in our listings yet.  We want you to be very happy with your new companion and will make suggestions based on what you tell us about you. Meet this handsome young boy, Bogart. Bogart is typical shih-tzu with all that personality! He of course likes to be in charge. He is two years old and 20 pounds. He is looking for a family who understands his breed, no small children, and possibly another doggie to play with. If you think he might be the boy for you, then please continue to read and fill out our online application. RECOMMENDATIONS & PROCEDURES Please note, the following are recommendations for puppies and different breeds of dogs. We will evaluate each application on an individual basis to see what is best for the dog/puppy and the potential adopter. Puppies are very fragile and not toys. We recommend children be at least six years old to be considered to adopt a puppy. Small breed dogs ( such as chihuahuas, yorkies, shih tzus , etc) we recommend children be at least eight years old. Herding, working breeds we recommend children to be at least 12 years old. Again these are recommendations. Adoption Procedures: We will travel up to two hours ( one way) to do physical home visits and we do not do virtual home visits. Most of our dogs come from bad situations and we want to know where their forever home is going to be. While we do not require fencing on all dogs, certain dogs that need a fenced in yard, will not be adopted unless potential adopter has one. We also adopt some dogs to people who live in apartments ( as long as the landlord approves) but not all dogs. We do not adopt to anyone under 21 years of age. We also do not feel college students are the best fit for most of our dogs. Most of our dogs again, come from bad situations and need lots of attention. Most college students have financial responsibilities and we feel need to be focused on school. Our goal is to match the dog with a family that fits the dog’s needs. We are solely focused on what is best for each dog in our rescue. These dogs have had enough moving around, dumped out like trash, and we want to ensure they find their forever home. We do require you sign a contract and if at any time you cannot continue to provide for the dog, the dog comes back to the rescue. Your first step to adoption is filling our our on line application. You will then get an automated email stating we got your application Next our adoption coordinator will be in touch either by phone or email If your references check out, a home visit will be scheduled. After the home visit is done, a meet and greet with the dog you are interested in and/or any other available dogs we have will be scheduled If the dog and you are a match, contract will be signed and you may take your new family member home. Effie is a precious senior girl that is ready to find a family to call her own. Effie came to us from a horrible situation where she was one of twelve dogs that were living in a house that was beyond nasty - they had never been outside and were being fed just whatever was in the cabinets or refrigerator - Effie was so matted up when she came to the rescue that we did not even know if she was a male or female and she was not able to see until we shaved her down as her eyes were covered with matts of fur. Effie has really blossomed and is one of the more independent and confident dogs out of the group. She has decided that living the good life as a spoiled dog is pretty darn amazing and she loves to run and play outside. We estimate her age to be 7 years old- sometimes it is hard to tell as the neglect she suffered for years can make them appear normal and there was no way to tell her age from her teeth as they were in horrible shape and she had major dental work done after coming to the rescue. Effie does well with other dogs - she has not been around cats or small kids. She is doing well with her housebreaking but will require patience and consistency when going to a new home with a new schedule. Effie is spayed, has had her dental work done and remaining teeht cleaned. she has had a full workup with bloodwork and a urinalysis, heartworm tested and current on heartworm prevention and flea/tick prevention, dewormed, current on vaccines and microchipped.
