Story
Hazel was surrendered by her owner who was going through a lifestyle/income change and they need to let go of some of their pets to be financially stable. Hazel requires regular visits to the groomer which was the reason she was chosen to be surrendered. Her owner had taken good care of her and was very sad to let her go but we reassured her we would find Hazel a good home. Hazel is good with cats and other dogs. This adorable fluff ball is very friendly and walks well on a leash. Hazel is about 2 years old and 15 lbs. We do NOT ship our animals. All adoptive families must travel to us to meet their adoptive dog/cat. Applicants must live within a 2 hour radius from Sparta/Andover (07871/07821). Please understand that we are an animal shelter and thus unable to say whether the dogs are housebroken as they are not in homes. If you are interested in adopting, we encourage you to please submit an application on our website today so that we can try and process and pre-approve any potential adopters prior to our next adoption event. PLEASE USE THIS LINK TO SUBMIT AN ADOPTION APPLICATION. WE ONLY ACCEPT ADOPTION APPLICATIONS THROUGH OUR WEBSITE. ANY OTHERS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED. Application link here: http://www.oscaranimalrescue.org/oscar-1-application.html Hazel's adoption fee is $450. Story
*This is a courtesy post, Alfie is not currently with our rescue. Please contact mahwahpetcenter@gmail.com for more information and to schedule a meet. He is currently in Mahwah in Bergen County, NJ* Alfie is an adorable 9 year old Shih Tzu mix who was abandoned and is currently being cared for by staff at a local boarding kennel, but they would love for him to find just the right home. He has a lot of great qualities- he’s very friendly meeting people and staff there has had no issues handling him, he gets along with other dogs of all sizes he’s met there, and LOVES to play with toys. Almost to the point of obsession, but he can occupy himself for hours playing- he considers himself a field bred Labrador and not a fluffy little lapdog. He’s not sure why Shih Tzu can’t be considered for police and search and rescue work but he’s ready to throw his paw into the ring as the very first, and has that obsessive drive alerting you when he finds where you have hidden the toys for the day. He’s flunked out of a couple of homes for his quirks and isn’t for the inexperienced and faint of heart- he can be moody and lash out if interrupted from what he wants to do, and protective of those he’s most bonded to in a home environment. So he needs someone that understands how to manage and live with bossy little Napoleons and figure out how to get him to want to do what you want him to do, and not force him. No children definitely, he’s more than enough work, and he could probably live with dogs that don’t interrupt his toy time and just let him be. But he’s a really fun funny little guy for someone with a sense of humor. Please email his friends at mahwahpetcenter@gmail.com for adoption details. Alfie is eligible for reduced cost vet care with his friends at Mahwah Veterinarian Groom & Board for life with adoption Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
Scrappy had a crappy owner and crappy life and is ready for a fresh start! His owners were evicted and just left him behind in the vacant apartment, a scared defensive matted mess. He’s just a baby, 1-2 years old and took some time to feel safe but is sweet and playful once he warms up. He’s a Shih Tzu or maybe Lhasa mix, 15lbs and now has been neutered and updated on shots. He had untreated chronic dry eye and is on prescription medication for life- he was a bit dramatic and convinced we were trying to blind him with the eye drops but now is calming down since he realizes it helps him feel better and is much more cooperative for his twice daily treatments. He’s a cute but quirky guy who definitely needs his space at first but lovable once he lets down his guard. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Scrappy in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
She’s definitely not the cutest looking dog, or the youngest, or the most housebroken (or housebroken at all) but little Starla is a sweet little gem. She’s back on the market and looking for an understanding home in her senior years. This 13 year old Shih Tzu/yorkie mix has been passed around a lot but is a lovable cuddly girl who still has some spunk. She’s blind in one eye and has cherry eyes that have been there her whole life and aren’t causing an issue and are more cosmetic at this point… it kind of makes her look demonic with glowing eyes depending on how the light hits her but we promise she’s no devil dog. And she barely has any teeth anyway. Starla does fine living with other gentle little dogs and mostly wants to be cuddled on your lap. She does need a home with a fenced yard as she refused to go to the bathroom on leash walks in her previous home, and does much better following other dogs out into a yard. She hates crates and being confined and gets more anxious/has more accidents when she is locked up, and does best loose with wee wee pads and sleeping in bed next to her person. But if housebreaking is a dealbreaker she’s not the one for you and doesn’t deserve to get bounced around again for that. Overall she’s in great health for a little old lady and we are hoping she will have several years to enjoy in her forever home. She is non-shedding, about 11lbs, spayed and updated on shots. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet senior Starla in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
Meet Michael Scott! At first glance, he seems like a loud, rude, obnoxious jerk. But if you make it past the awful first impression, you will find he can actually be a lovable goofy buffoon and fun to hang out with, and will keep you laughing. There’s definitely room for some character development, especially improvement with impulse control and learning to keep his mouth shut and be less offensive in public. But he probably won’t be the worst dog-boss you have ever had. Just a year old, he was surrendered to animal control for being “too hyper”, definitely still in his puppy phase. He growled at the vet so loudly they couldn’t even listen to his heartbeat and barks ferociously at first with new people, but deep down he’s just nervous and afraid of ending up alone. He’s been fine with other little dogs and they seem to normal him out a bit- he seems like a dog that was taken from his mom way too young and never got enough attention, so he makes sure he’s the center of attention at all times now. He’s only 12lbs, some kind of Shih Tzu mix, is updated on shots and we have had him neutered so he won’t be demanding you to set him up on dates. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet the Michael Scott of Northern NJ. Applications from Scranton, PA will be given preference😜 Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. DOB 4-12-2025 Tashi is a gorgeous little guy that loves everyone, likes toys and playing with his little friends. Tashi would love to have his own home! He is neutered, heartworm negative, received his ProHeart6 injection and up to date on shots. He will come with a total history of his medical records and his registration papers. Tashi's adoption fee is 900.00 and his transport fee is 165.00. You can find a copy of that application here. After you submit your application please allow a few days to review your application. During this time your vet reference will be checked. Applications are not approved on a first come, first serve basis. We do look for the best home that fits each of our pets, so even if the pet has other applications, this does not mean he/she will be adopted to that home. Once your application has been approved we with contact you to set up a phone interview. This is the perfect time for you to ask any questions you have about the adoption process and the pet you are interested in.Together we can decide if this is the best choice for both.
