Story
Bobo is a friendly 13 year old Shih tzu mix looking for a loving home in which to spend his senior years. He has some common old age issues- a heart murmur that he's on medication for, chronic dry eye and ear infections, and some early kidney disease- but still has some spring in his step and enjoys his walks and hanging with his people. He hasn't had much exposure to other dogs and seems nervous of them and would prefer to be an only pet. Please submit an application to meet him Primary Color: Black Secondary Color: White Age: 13yrs 6mths 0wks

Story
Our special survivor Poppy has beat the odd and is looking for her perfect calmer adult forever home! This 5 year old Shih tzu/terrier mix is lucky to be alive, let alone walking! She was hit by a car and her pelvis broken in 3 places as well as ligaments in one of her knees torn. Vets initially weren't sure she would be able to use the bathroom unassisted or be able to walk but after surgery, time, and crate rest she's doing so much better than expected! She's still a bit wobbly and muscle wasted and will need some physical therapy once her pelvis is more healed and she's cleared by the vet, and she will never be an agility champion but is housebroken and continent and enjoying her short walks for now. Poppy is a nervous girl despite her cuddly muppet appearance, and tends to bond to her people preferably women and become protective and suspicious of visitors. So she's looking for a calmer adult home where she just has to unconditionally love her beloved person/people and isn't expected to be the life of the party or welcoming committee to everyone who meets her. She's fine with other small gentle calm dogs- no one that will want to wrestle and jump on her as she continues to heal, but she is happy to nap on her soft fluffy beds with other little dogs in our vet room where she's been hanging out. She loves stuffed squeaky toys and hanging out at your feet while you are working or watching tv. Poppy is 20lbs with the face of a Shih tzu but a taller frame and longer legs, and the sweetest most soulful eyes that gaze up at you lovingly once she trusts you. Please submit an application to meet her Primary Color: Grey Age: 5yrs 2mths 0wks

Story
Meet HC Lizard TX! He came to NorthStar when his owners found themselves without a home and unable to care for him and their other dogs. Lizard is a Shih Tzu mix, approximately 1 year old, and weighing just 11 pounds. Lizard's TX foster tells us that he is terrified of cats larger than 10 pounds. He will “scream” when they just look at him, however, he is good with and enjoys the company of smaller cats as you can see in his photos. He will actually groom them and sleeps with them. Lizard made his way to NJ and has settled into his foster home. He resides with another dog who he loves to play with and sleep next to (as seen in the images below) although this did not happen right away! Lizard is skittish when he meets new humans and other dogs. However, he does enjoy his humans and his fosters friends that come by. He also acclimated to the neighbor's dogs through the fence though he was scared of them at first. So don’t let his initial fear deter you as it’s all a lie! If you are looking for a Netflix and chill type of dude, Lizard is your man! He loves to be near his humans and especially loves being held! Since he is just one year old he does still get his zoomies 1-2x/day. He does well on a leash but only when not in crowds! Lizard would do best in a home without children as sudden movements set him off. Although he has gotten used to it there are still occasions where he doesn’t like it and will bark or “scream” or even charge. Lizard will do his business outside but will also utilize wee wee pads. His fosters in NJ are trying to break him of his accidents in the home. He is not crate trained due to his anxiety while in the crate that causes him to relieve himself however, he doesn’t get himself into any trouble when left out when his fosters are out. Unfortunately, Lizard can get carsick if he is in the back seat of a car so he does best riding "shotgun". If you are interested in meeting Lizard please consider submitting an adoption application and be sure to mention his name - HC Lizard TX!!!!  October 2, 2024, 5:03 pm

Story
Meet Molly, the 8-year-old Shih Tzu who's been through so much!  This sweet girl was neglected and left in poor health but now she's getting the love and care she deserves! Molly is a shy and quiet girl who loves human companionship. She might not be the most playful, but she gets along great with other dogs if they respect her boundaries. She also does well with cats.  Molly has made a full recovery from her past health issues including the removal of a large mass from her belly! Molly enjoys a special homemade diet that's tailored just for her. She's been given a clean bill of health from the vet and is ready to live her best life.    More about Molly: She's a low energy lap dog who loves to cuddle up and enjoy quiet moments. If you're looking for a calm and loving companion who will appreciate a gentle and nurturing home, Molly might be the perfect fit. She's best suited for a home with kids aged 9+, where she can receive gentle attention and affection.  Molly is all up to date on her vaccinations and she is spayed. She is also crate trained, walks well on a leash and is housebroken. Molly is currently enjoying a special diet of homemade food as suggested by her vet. This diet has been tailored to her specific needs and has greatly improved her health and well-being. We are looking for an adopter who is willing and able to continue this special diet as it is crucial to her ongoing health.   Molly's back story: On April 15th, Molly was rescued from a neglectful breeding business. She was in rough shape, but she received the medical care she needed, including surgery and medication. She is now thriving and enjoying her second chance at life! All of Molly's vet care, surgery, medication, and food has been covered by us.   Molly is NOT with NorthStar Pet Rescue but we are helping her foster parents to network her for a suitable retirement home. If you are interested in adopting Molly and being part of her new life, please complete an adoption application at www.northstarpets.org and be sure to ask for XP MOLLY!    NOTE:  This pet is being shared by NorthStar Pet Rescue on behalf of another organization or individual and is not a NorthStar Pet Rescue dog. NorthStar cannot guarantee the accuracy of this listing, and any applications and inquiries about this pet made will be sent to the originator.  October 2, 2024, 5:03 pm

Story
Update 12/26/22: Our little grinch Mad Max had a lot to be grumpy about this holiday season. He has just passed his 1 year anniversary with our rescue, which meant an annual vet visit, shots updated, bloodwork… he was displeased 😡 His owners had said he was about 4 years old, but he’s definitely more at the senior stage of his life according to his recheck this week, at least 7-8 years old. Since they couldn’t seem to keep him from constantly running loose and playing in traffic, it’s not surprising they couldn’t count either 🤦‍♀️ He is still an angry little mad man at times but has mellowed quite a bit- between his age and low-stress low-expectation lifestyle he’s been living, maybe he will actually be a nice dog by the time he’s a teenager. If you respect his space and let him be himself he’s actually pretty pleasant and easy to live with, has an understanding with his other weird bad boy dog friends, and appreciates a stable routine. Definitely no children and a calmer adult home, he’s looking for someone who understands him and will work to build a bond of mutual respect, maybe even love one day. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Mad Max in Northern NJ Meet Mad Max! He came to us with a bit of a reputation… a multiple time running-at-large offender whose owner finally decided to just not pick him back up from the shelter instead of just getting him neutered and being more careful to keep him at home 🤦‍♀️. He was a feisty guy at the shelter with a big personality, aloof with strangers, protective of his food, and not liking some handling. In other words a normal Lhasa type personality and Second Chance demon dog🤷‍♀️. Here he’s not as bad as expected, respectful of the dogs and has warmed up and been sweet and avoidant of confrontation for the most part, definitely no Ray or even Prancer. He seemed to actually be very accustomed and comfortable with a basket muzzle for grooming and vetting which is great… without the muzzle he tried tasting the clippers 😖 but as soon as the muzzle was on he immediately flopped down and calmly allowed us to shave him. Rated R for sure, no kids and a respectful adult home that knows when to give him space and give him attention on his terms. Another dog or a few dogs to live with seem to help balance him, and he so far seems to be pretty housebroken as well as wee wee pads if needed. Mad Max is approximately 4 years old and we think a Lhasa and/or Shih Tzu mix, 15lbs full grown, and is neutered and updated on shots. Please email njwoof@cs.com to meet him Due to COVID-19, we will not be holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we can schedule socially distant appointments with a specific dog outdoors at our vet’s office: VCA Morris Plains Animal Hospital 3009 Rt 10 East Morris Plains (Denville on GPS) NJ 07950 Now is the perfect time to open your home to a needy dog! Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
Buster is another tough little demonically possessed tiny dude who grudgingly (mutually, especially on our part, we really really really didn’t want another one right now) found his way to our rescue. We wouldn’t be surprised to learn that he’s related to our also crazy little semi-adoptable Nayla-squirrel-muppet as they share many of the same qualities, looks and personality and originated in the same town. Buster is 4 years old, under 10 lbs, and may be the fountainhead from which this whole family of little psychos have sprung 😳 We aren’t sure of his mix- Nayla’s Dna test showed she’s mostly Shih tzu, Lhasa, chihuahua, and min pin. We would get him a dna test to confirm their relation but don’t think he would allow us to swab his mouth 🦷. He doesn’t want to be held responsible for all that child support. He’s neutered now so the gene pool is hopefully dead forever at last. Buster has many great qualities. He’s adorable to look at, small and cute with an expressive face. He seems to be pretty good about housebreaking. He’s…. Umm, nope that’s it, that’s all his good qualities. He’s never murdered anyone as far as we know, or he’s covered up his past crimes well enough 🤷‍♀️ His likes include being told he’s cute from a distance, looking cute in photos, having his own space, and perching on his favorite soft comfy pillow surveying his empire. That’s all we have identified so far. His dislikes? It’s a long, long list. Let’s see: vets, groomers, having his eye boogers wiped, being startled or handled when he doesn’t want to be, strangers, children, strangers’ children, babies, people considering having babies in his lifetime, visitors, delivery men, repairmen, probably men in general, being cuddled, being kissed in the face, being dressed up… that’s what we know so far. If you want to adopt him for some reason you can spend a lifetime discovering new things to enjoy hating together. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Buster in Northern NJ if you want a cute little Devil 😈 dog and the perfect excuse to be antisocial and get people to leave you alone and not ask you to babysit their children ever again. Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.
