Walter is a 10-year-old Shih Tzu rescued through the Humane Society. Walter only has his canine teeth left, so he will need canned food for the remainder of his life; but he just had a dental in June, so those remaining teeth are clean and polished! Walter is showing some signs of aging, but he is in very good shape. He tolerates some dogs but would prefer to be the only male, and he would be happiest if he was the star of the show. His favorite thing is going on a treasure hunt to find all of the toys. He brings them back to his bed and makes a huge pile of his bounty. Then he sits on his throne to survey all that he has accomplished. Walter appears to like men more than women. He loves to curl up and snuggle in the recliner on his foster dad's lap, but he refuses to sit long-term with his foster mom. She's trying not to take it personally, but he does follow her around the house. Walter has backpack all packed, and he's ready to travel. He would love to head out and see everything there is to see in the world! He loves looking out the window! Walter was recently groomed and will require regular grooming with his new adopters. Hi! My name is Gidget. I am a 9 year, lovable Shih Tzu looking for my forever home. I am spryand keep my foster mommy laughing. I will let her know when she is out of my sight, and I can't find her by barking and asking where she is. She is spoiling me by picking me up and down to get on the sofa, but I can do it myself. She is trying to teach me how to do steps up to the bed, but why should I when she is there to pick me up. I am blind in my right eye, but that does not stop me. I am good about scanning my environment to see where I need to go. I am working on potty training. I have went through some home changes recently so sometimes I forget to bark when I need to go out, but my foster mommy said I am doing good with my training. I walk well on a leash, and I love to go for car rides. I am a perfect companion dog. I don't pay any attention to the cats in my foster home, and I am good with my pack. I do let them know when they are too close to me and bothering me. They just back off and life is great again. My foster mommy says I would be good as an only dog too if that is what you are looking for. What am I looking for? A loving home that will let me be their shadow and cuddle with them. I am around 4 years old and came from a situation with some other pups where our living situation wasn't very good. I am so appreciative of all the little things that most dogs take for granted. A kind word, a gentle pet, a soft bed, some tasty treats!! I am so very loving, coming for some pets every chance I get and my favorites are ear scratches and belly rubs. I haven't had much experience with this big ole world but I've been doing better with encountering new things (I might need a minute but I get there). I would probably do best in a quieter home where my person(s) work from home or are retired. I do have some cataracts developing and would benefit from having surgery. I can see but sometimes maybe not all that clearly. I do great with people once I get to know them but would probably do best in a home with just older kiddos. I do wonderfully with the other dogs in my foster home from big to smaller and also the resident kitty. And I'm also crate and house trained! I get so excited to see you when you get home even if it was just to get the mail!! I don't really play too much with toys but I do love snuggling on a soft blanket! Wow! I'm a darling. I will be someone's love of their life! I was in a home with some people who couldn't keep me because they had do travel so much (why I couldn't go is a mystery to me). And, I love attention and would probably prefer to be an only pet so I can be the special girl. Older children are okay, but I'm not that fond of infants. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! Secure fenced yard (no electric fences) and companion dog required Misty is a 6 year old shih tzu who had a rough start to life. She is gentle and shy, and she has some quirks. Misty is unable to navigate down flights of stairs, so she needs to be carried. She can go up stairs just fine. She also is sometimes afraid of going outside, so again she needs to be picked up and carried. Misty gets along with other dogs great and mostly just wants to chill near them. She is not rowdy nor is she very loud unless she’s been locked in her crate and she wants out. When she gets excited her whole body wiggles and she starts licking whoever is nearby. Misty would be great in a quiet home where people are around often. She benefits from frequent potty breaks, gets excited for meals and takes treats gently.
