Story
Zelda is 5 years old and a lover of all people and pets. She could use a bit more work with her training but is very capable. She is well trained with the potty bells, kennel trained and tolerant of grooming. If you have a lap, she'll love to be on it and looking out the window perched on a sofa back is a favorite past time. I have a large family and we have become consistently too busy to give her the amount of attention she needs and deserves.

Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Story
Sadie is 5 years old and weighs 11 lbs. She is white and red in color. Sadie is up to date on vaccines and is spayed and just recently had a dental and just finished all her meds.   She has been dealing with alopecia, but it is under control and now has no hair loss.  You will need to continue giving her Omega 3 and a healthy diet.  If there’s a reoccurrence of hair loss she may need to see a vet dermatologist. Sadie is a sweet little girl.  She’s very loving and scared at the same time as she came from a mill.  She snuggles up to her foster at bed time and needs to be close. She gets along with her pups and isn’t aggressive at all.   Her personality is just now coming out, she gets so excited when she sees her foster  and when it’s time to eat and at snack time.   When she wags her tail her whole bottom wiggles, so cute.     She will follow you around when outside and keep a close eye on you.  Sadie isn’t fully house trained, she loves to mark, but since her spay, it has reduced.  In the house we still use doggy diapers.  She’s still learning the word NO.  More training will be required, along with leash training.   She loves to be called a good girl. She gobbles her food, and tends to throw it up afterwards, so until she slows down on her own, she will need a Slow-Feed Dog Bowl.   The perfect home for Sadie;      Someone who will enjoy her as much as she will enjoy you.  Preferably someone who is home a lot.  No small children but older is fine.   An established dog in home to help teach her how to continue to be a dog.  She watches her fosters dogs and catches on fast, but she is still adjusting to a home and humans.    A calm home is best.  She loves to sleep in bed, a crate is not recommended     Sadie will feel more comfortable sleeping in your bed.  She doesn’t like to be alone.  We have enjoyed and love fostering her.     If you think Sadie might be the perfect fit for you, please apply!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 1, 2024, 5:42 pm

daily walk and plenty of interactive playtime. Her family must be able and willing to provide this for her every day. 2. A small, playful dog of equal energy would be great for Bella. She enjoys playing with another dog and thoroughly enjoys other canine companionship. 3. A fenced yard would be a bonus, but is not a deal breaker. Because Bella loves to run and explore, she would enjoy a secure area in which to do so under supervision. 4. A family who is home much of the day and will include her in their daily activities. Bella attaches easily to her people and just wants to be with them. 5. An adults only family; children over the age of ten who understand how to interact gently with a small dog will be considered. 6. A family who will understand, be patient, and continue helping Bella with her house training. She is doing well while in foster care, but it is not guaranteed that she will be housetrained when she is adopted. 7. Adoptive family should live within 45 miles of the Twin City area so Bella’s foster mom can schedule a home visit. 8. Adoptive family must commit to attend the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion of Minnesota held in September each year. Bella will be available for adoption near the end of November due to necessary upcoming surgeries. But applications for adoption are being accepted now. She is scheduled to be spayed November 11th. She is currently in heat, so her spay had to be postponed for two months for medical safety. At the time of her spay she will also have her left cherry eye repaired. as a red, swollen mass on the lower eyelid near the nose resembling a cherry. The official name is a prolapse of the third eyelid gland. To meet Bella, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see her and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown PetCo in Bloomington, MN

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Are you an active home looking for a sweet pup to walk and play with? If so, read about beautiful Gracie! Gracie is a one year old, 12 pound Shih Tzu. She is spayed and healthy as can be! Because she is a puppy, she is all play and full of energy. She is still learning how to be a well-mannered dog, but she is a fast learner and eager to please. As with any puppy, we strongly recommend taking her to a behavior training class. She is well socialized and gets along with other dogs and people, although she can be shy at first. Gracie is accustomed to 3-4 walks a day, and lots of playing fetch with her toys and balls. She is not yet at an age where she is content to just “be”, so her owners must to have the time to interact with her and keep her entertained. If left alone for long periods of time, she will find things to get into and chew on them! She is given a soft Kong now with a few treats inside and that keeps her busy for a while. Her foster mom calls her a little scamp because she is so delightful and such a happy girl! At night she is a calm sleeper right next to you in bed, and during her “down” times during the day she loves to curl up next to your lap. She is quite a cuddler once she gets to know you. Gracie is a good eater and is very food motivated, so you need to really be aware of limiting the quantity and variety of her treats. Gracie also is really good in the car, so she would be a good traveler and you can include her in most of your daily activities and excursions. In summary, Gracie is a very loving, sweet, adorable girl who needs a home where the owners can interact and spend a lot of time engaging her energy and curious nature. She cannot be left alone more than 4 hours a day even if there is another dog in the home, and needs a walk and about 30 minutes of playtime every 4 hours. She does get anxious without her person/people, so it would be best if there is someone who is home most of the day with her. Another small, playful, well-mannered dog as a companion and a role model would be very helpful to her. The following are requirements for Gracie’s new home: · Because Shih Tzus often live 16+ years, applications will only be considered from age appropriate individuals who will be able to provide the care and activity necessary for the rest of Gracie’s life. · Due to Gracie’s high energy level and some separation anxiety, she must have a family who is home much of the time or can come home every 4 hours to give her a long walk and play with her for at least 30 minutes each time. · Another well-mannered, small dog of equal energy level in the house would be a plus, but not an absolute, to help her with the separation anxiety and her need for playful canine interaction. · Her new family must be active, but their activity should include Gracie, and something she enjoys! A lot of people running in and out raises her stress level. · An adults only home would be best, but a home which includes children over the age of ten will be considered, based upon their previous experience with small dogs. · Her family must commit to keeping her on a housetraining schedule (at least every 4 hours. · Continue basic and socialization training (she already knows “sit” and “wait” and a little “come”!), but structured training classes would be ideal. · Must live within 45 miles of Bloomington, MN. · Willing to keep in touch and follow-up with the foster parent, and especially to attend the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September every year. Gracie is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Her adoption fee is $420.00 plus $35.81 sales tax for a total of $455.81. To meet Gracie, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see her and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown PetCo in Bloomington, MN.

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Hi! My name is Peak and I am from Arkansas. From his foster: Meet the adorable little loaf called Peak! He has such a charming personality and even more charming mannerisms to go with it. He's a very sweet boy and loves butt scratches, ear rubs, belly rubs, lots and lots of naps (sometimes laying flat on his back), chewing on dog chews, and slow leisurely strolls with ample time for sniffing. He's an older guy (we think maybe a little older than 7 based on his physical condition) who mostly operates at one speed (slow), and while his vision/hearing aren't all there anymore, his back legs aren't as strong as they used to be, and he's got some old man lumps and bumps, he has shown us that he still has some spunk left and is really just happy to be here. His tail happily wags anytime we approach him or we talk to him and sometimes he'll do an excited little dance. He likes one particular soft squeaky toy so far and will pounce on it and shake it around when the mood strikes. He has attempted to play with our small dog on a couple occasions but he's a bit awkward in his attempts and since he doesn't see the best, it's hard for him to keep up. He tries his best though! He mostly likes to nap and be pet. With his lower vision, he still sees enough to get around without running into too much. It takes him a few moments to locate his food bowl or the treat you're holding. When you call for him in the yard it is a winding path for him to find you but he's eager in his efforts. He can't always find his way back to the door but his tail wags happily when we come to rescue him and give him a lift back inside. He is not very confident on stairs, especially going down, so would do best in a home with minimal stairs inside/to get to the yard. Or, if you have stairs inside, he doesn't mind being carried but you would need the ability to block them off so he doesn't accidentally take a tumble. He for sure has cataracts, but will be seeing a vet soon to evaluate his eyes and see if he needs any medical treatment. He's been good on leash (wears a harness as pressure on his neck makes him cough) and enjoys short, slow walks. He's curious about dogs and people going by. Given the opportunity on a walk he will go up to a person to say hello. (He's been fairly social with company also.) His limit seems to be about a mile at a time, a little more if it's mild out, a little less if it's warm out. He is not winning any races and it can take us around 45 minutes to go one mile. If you're looking for an exercise partner, or if it annoys you when a dog wants to spend a lot of time sniffing and marking, he will not be the right fit for you. The only time he's shown some stubbornness is if you try to walk by a spot he really wants to investigate. He gets a lot of joy and mental enrichment out of his daily (sometimes twice daily) strolls though - you'll have to accept that his walks are for him! He doesn't mind being carried when he gets too warm/tired. He probably wouldn't mind a dog stroller either if you want to be able to go farther. He's been good with our small dog and has been respectful of our older grumpy cat. He took to our small dog pretty quickly and likes to give him sniffs and has tried to play with him a few times. He has also tried to hump him several times which our dog doesn't love, but that seems to have lessened with time. He has not been exposed to bigger dogs while here. He has met a couple briefly in passing on walks and after a few seconds lifts his lip. It could have had more to do with their energy level, and/or he may just prefer slower intros to new friends and not while leashed (not uncommon). Both he and our dog tend to guard chews/bones from other animals, so they just get to enjoy those in separate spaces. If there is already a resident dog in the home, we think he'd prefer a smaller friend closer to his size and one that is not overly energetic. He does not mind being in his crate and will sometimes go in there on his own and nap on his bed in there. In the beginning he was crated at night and didn't mind at all. (Now he sleeps on a dog bed on the floor of our room and does well with that.) He is crated if we are gone. One of us works from home so he has not been crated often, but has been successfully crated for short stints for errands, and up to 4-5 hours at a time on one occasion at this point. He has kept his crate clean and seems to mostly nap. Occasionally he hears something and will bark for a bit until he settles. He is otherwise a pretty quiet dog but will sometimes join in on barking or growling if our dog barks at something, even though he doesn't usually know why. Solidarity. He sometimes barks back at the neighbor dogs while in the yard too. He's pretty easy to redirect though. He appears to at least be house trained on a schedule. He has only had one accident while here. We haven't picked up on any signals other than when he's about to poop he walks in a million circles. Since he is still new here, he wears a belly band inside most of the time unless he's being closely monitored just to prevent any mishaps as he adjusts (we take it off at night and have been experimenting with having it on less while we're home with him). We would expect/hope with time he would be able to go without. If not, it's easy enough to use and he doesn't mind it. Being older and because one of us works from home, we are not sure if he could go a full 8-9 hour workday without a bathroom break. Currently on a typical day he gets a bathroom break every 4 hours or so between waking and bedtime. He sleeps through the night without needing to go out. He has not been exposed to kids while here. We wouldn't anticipate specific issues but a) because he has some level of impaired vision and does get startled if you move too fast or approach too fast, and b) he also seems to have some rear end weakness, for these reasons, we feel he'd be more comfortable with older kids (8+) who can reliably self-regulate themselves around him and be respectful and deliberate in how they approach him. He has a shorter haircut right now but it seems like he'll be a lighter shedder. He will need regular grooming. He has been good for bath time and minor grooming like trimming up his paw hair and his nails. With having big buggy eyes, he gets a lot of eye boogers but tolerates them being wiped pretty well.
