We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. I am house trained and although I'm not left alone a lot, my foster mom and dad trust me to have free roam of the house while they are away. I sleep in my crate at night, but if my forever home let me sleep in bed with them, I think I'd be cool with that. I do really well riding in the car and my leash skills aren't too shabby. I like stuffed animals and chewing on them is my favorite! My foster home has a fenced in yard where I love to run around, but that is not a requirement for me as long as I have other outlets to get my exercise in. I do get spurts of energy, but I'm not the kind of guy who is in constant go-mode. I am really happy chilling on the couch or in a comfy dog bed. I currently live with cats and other small dogs. I needed an adjustment period to learn boundaries with them and now we live happily together. My foster parents believe that I'd do great as an only pet too. I don't live with kids now and I think responsible and respectful kids would be ok. I sometimes have a lot to say and shared walls wouldn't be the best fit for me. I am treat and food motivated and I get overly excited for breakfast and dinner time. If my forever home took me to a training class, I bet I would be a wonderful student! She will cuddle for short periods but clingy doesn't describe her. She likes to find her own special, unique places to hang out and take naps. Sophie is well behaved in the house; she rarely barks. Kala is a 5 year old, 22 pound female Shih Tzu/Bichon mix. She is a gorgeous caramel color and has beautiful long eye lashes. She came into rescue because her owner moved into an apartment which didn’t allow dogs. Kala enjoys going for walks and usually walks about a mile per day. She is very friendly and respectfully greets people and other dogs while on walks. She will sometimes play fetch with a ball or tug a war with one of her toys. She does like exercise, and runs outside to chase the resident rabbits and squirrels around the yard. A secure, fenced yard would be ideal for her. Kala is very sweet, well behaved, housetrained, and knows a few commands such as “sit” and “down”. She loves being with her foster parents and other people and will sit on your lap at every opportunity. She is good around other dogs and children, and would be a wonderful family dog. A family with older children who know how to engage with a small dog will be considered. Kala does require someone be at home with her the majority of the time and who will include her in their daily activities. She rides well in the car, and likes looking out the window, so hopefully her family will take her with them when appropriate. She likes nothing better than to be with her people, and that includes sleeping with them in their bed. These are the requirements for Kala’s new family: 1. Be home much of the day and include Kala in their daily activities. 2. A fenced yard would be wonderful, but is not a deal breaker, especially if Kala will be taken on long walks every day. She must have daily exercise to be happy. 3. A family with older, respectful children will be considered. 4. Live within 30 miles of Inver Grove Heights, MN. 5. Try to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September each year. Kala is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. She has a history of urinary tract infections, which can recur, so her family must recognize the signs of an infection and have it treated immediately. Kala’s adoption fee is $370.00 plus $33.39 sales tax for a total fee of $403.39. To meet Kala, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph.
