Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Story
Sadie is 5 years old and weighs 11 lbs. She is white and red in color. Sadie is up to date on vaccines and is spayed and just recently had a dental and just finished all her meds.   She has been dealing with alopecia, but it is under control and now has no hair loss.  You will need to continue giving her Omega 3 and a healthy diet.  If there’s a reoccurrence of hair loss she may need to see a vet dermatologist. Sadie is a sweet little girl.  She’s very loving and scared at the same time as she came from a mill.  She snuggles up to her foster at bed time and needs to be close. She gets along with her pups and isn’t aggressive at all.   Her personality is just now coming out, she gets so excited when she sees her foster  and when it’s time to eat and at snack time.   When she wags her tail her whole bottom wiggles, so cute.     She will follow you around when outside and keep a close eye on you.  Sadie isn’t fully house trained, she loves to mark, but since her spay, it has reduced.  In the house we still use doggy diapers.  She’s still learning the word NO.  More training will be required, along with leash training.   She loves to be called a good girl. She gobbles her food, and tends to throw it up afterwards, so until she slows down on her own, she will need a Slow-Feed Dog Bowl.   The perfect home for Sadie;      Someone who will enjoy her as much as she will enjoy you.  Preferably someone who is home a lot.  No small children but older is fine.   An established dog in home to help teach her how to continue to be a dog.  She watches her fosters dogs and catches on fast, but she is still adjusting to a home and humans.    A calm home is best.  She loves to sleep in bed, a crate is not recommended     Sadie will feel more comfortable sleeping in your bed.  She doesn’t like to be alone.  We have enjoyed and love fostering her.     If you think Sadie might be the perfect fit for you, please apply!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.September 21, 2024, 8:22 pm

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Maycie and Teddy are an adorable bonded pair of siblings who are ready to bring their playful and loving energy into your home! At around 11 pounds each, they are the perfect size for cuddles and playtime. They were surrendered to rescue because their previous family had very young children and consequently Maycie and Teddy came second to the children. The family didn’t have the time to devote to Maycie and Teddy, and the children were to too young to understand how to interact with dogs, creating a negative experience for the dogs. Maycie is a charming, 6 year old little lady with a soft tan and white coat that perfectly complements her big, expressive puppy dog eyes. She is full of life and loves to be playful, with a particular fondness for toys, fetching with her mini tennis balls, and chasing bunnies in the yard. Maycie is also a cuddle enthusiast, often found snuggling up with her foster dad or keeping watch by the bay window. She’s doing great with potty training and is always excited for mealtime - dinner is definitely one of her favorite parts of the day. Teddy, with his cool chocolate and silvery coat, brings a calm and gentle presence to the pair. He is 5 years old. His sweet, soft stares are his way of communicating what he wants, and he loves to snuggle under a blanket with his human companions. Teddy is very much a follower of his sister Maycie and loves to mimic her playful antics. Breakfast is his favorite meal, and he enjoys going for walks and joining in on all the fun. Together, Maycie and Teddy make a fantastic duo who adore each other and their human companions. They get along wonderfully with their foster siblings and are friendly towards everyone they meet, whether human or dog. They are excellent walkers (though their manners would benefit from some leash training) and are always eager to jump in the car for a ride. They are both doing great with potty training and enjoy exploring the yard! In their previous home, they did not have a good experience with small children, so for that reason they would do best in a home where there are no small children, whether living there or visiting. The following are requirements for Maycie and Teddy’s adoption: · An active family who will include both Maycie and Teddy in their daily activities and give them plenty of playtime and exercise. They need a family who is home much of the day and will give them the attention and love they deserve - they always want to be with their family. · Because they do not do well with small children, an adults only home would be best for them. But a family with children over the age of ten, who understand how to be gentle and respectful of small dogs, will be considered. · Maycie and Teddy love to cuddle, so their new family should be ready for lots of snuggling, whether it’s on the couch or under the bed blankets. They're often found nestled under their foster dad's work desk, gently asking to be held throughout the day! · They love each other and are used to being the only pets in the house, but could also get along well with another small, friendly canine companion. · They would really enjoy having a fenced yard, but would be fine in a home where they get frequent walks. · Live within 30 miles of Roseville, MN. · Agree to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September each year. Maycie and Teddy are both spayed and neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Health Note: Both Maycie and Teddy are in great health. Teddy has a history of liver shunt surgery, but recent blood work shows he is doing exceptionally well and there is little concern for this condition. Both dogs are scheduled for dentals on October 11th with the rescue’s veterinarian, which will be covered by the rescue. Teddy will also have a cherry eye repair done at the same time as his dental work. Their adoption fee is $640.00 plus $46.04 in sales tax, totaling $686.04. To meet them, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see them and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southdale PetCo in Bloomington, MN. Maycie and Teddy are eager to start the next chapter of their lives with a loving family. If you think you can provide them with a wonderful home, they would love to meet you

Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Molly is an adorable 12 year old, ready to start the next chapter of her life. She was surrendered to the rescue because her previous owner was in a nursing home and could no longer take care of her. Molly is has a soft tan and white coat that perfectly complements her beautiful brown eyes. She loves to follow her foster parents around and likes to be with people. Molly sleeps in the bedroom with her foster parents – either in a dog bed or sometimes directly under the bed. Molly adapted quickly to her foster family and is used to a schedule of going out 4-5 times a day. She is house trained and has not had any accidents since coming to her foster family. Molly currently has two foster dog siblings that she gets along with well. She is overweight and needs a family who will not feed her table scraps and will keep her on a nutritious well balanced diet. While in her foster home, she has been on a reduced calorie dog food and her foster parents have been diligent about walking her. She had not previously been taken on walks and she has quickly gained more energy and stamina and now enjoys going for a walk! And she loves to greet all the neighbors. The following are requirements for Molly’s adoption: 1. A family that will include her in their daily activities and will provide her with a walk daily, will play with her and/or provide a yard with plenty of room for exercise. She would do well with a family where someone is home most of the time as she is content to lay near anyone who is at home. 2. Molly would do best with an adults only home but a family with children over the age of ten, who understand how to be gentle and respectful of small dogs, will be considered. 3. Live within 30 minutes of Fridley, MN. 4. Agree to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September of each year. Molly is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Health Note: Molly is having dental work done in October and is on a low-calorie diet. She is enjoying the benefit of eating healthy food and daily exercise. Her new family must be willing to continue to feed Molly only healthy dog food (no people food!) to reduce her weight, and give her the necessary exercise so that she will live a long, healthy life. Molly’s adoption fee is $170.00 plus $14.49 in sales tax, totaling $184.49. To meet Molly, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see Molly and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 a.m. to noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southdale Petco in Bloomington, Minnesota. Meet Kash, a happy, sassy Shih Tzu mix. He is 3 years old and is just a little guy, weighing only about 7 pounds. Kash was turned in with two other dogs after his family had a change in their living situation and were unable to keep him. He is potty trained, but does occasionally lift his leg on things in the house. This will most likely subside because he has just been neutered. Kash loves spending time with his people, playing with toys, and eating treats. He was a little reserved when he first came into his foster home, but he is very curious, especially if food is involved, and he has quickly settled in with his foster family. He is okay with being left alone for short periods of time during the day, but does bark when initially left alone, so a single family home that does not have shared walls would be best (no townhome or apartment). He would prefer to have someone home most of the day. There are another Shih Tzu and cats in his foster home and he has tried to get them to play, but without much luck. He was accustomed to living with two other dogs, and he would enjoy the company of another small playful dog, although he would also be fine as an only dog getting all of the attention. Kash loves to be touching his person and will gladly cuddle up on the couch to watch TV with you. He walks well on a leash and enjoys going for walks, usually about a mile and a half at least once a day. He would love a family that will spend time playing with him and taking him on long daily walks which allow him to sniff, explore, and take in the outside world. These are the requirements for Kash’s ideal home: - Kash would prefer an active, able bodied adults only home. He would do okay with older children (teenagers). He loves walks, so his new family must be able, and enjoy, taking him on long walks every day (1-2 miles). - A home where someone is home most of the day. He really loves being physically close to his people, and his new family members must enjoy an affectionate, cuddly dog. - Having another small playful dog in the home who has the same energy level and wants to engage in “dog play” would be great, but being an only dog will also be considered, as long as Kash is given ample interactive play and exercise time. - Kash needs a family that is experienced with dogs and Shih Tzu care. He needs regular grooming and to have his eyes and face cleaned frequently. - He does bark when left alone and would prefer a house with no shared walls, or someone who is home the majority of the time. - Kash would benefit from some obedience training, so a family who would dedicate time to taking him to some structured obedience classes would be ideal. He is a very smart boy who loves to please, and with gentle guidance he will be the perfect family member. - Live within 30 miles of Inver Grove Heights, MN. - Commit to attending the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each September. Kash is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $370.00, plus $31.54 sales tax for a total of $401.54. To meet Kash, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southdale PetCo in Bloomington, MN.
