You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. //   Find our applications at www.midwestanimalrescue.org$350 plus tax for William and HenryThese brothers would love to find ahome together! They are happy little guys, looking for a good sniff of the grass and gentle ear rubs. They are looking for a forever home in which they can comfortably retire. William and Henry both have a genetic eye condition (William one eye, Henry both) that leads to degeneration of certain cells in the eyes that leads to excess fluid build up in the eyes. William and Henry's vision is hazy but still present. All affected eyes do not seem uncomfortable right now but if too much fluid builds up it can cause blisters on the eye and pain from the excess fluid and inflammation inside the eye. There is no way to reverse the damage or replace the degenerated cells but there's eye drops to help draw excess fluid out to try to slow the progression. Both dogs will need to be on an eye ointment twice daily for life to help with this. Story
Meet Bruno and Rodent, an adorable Maltese-Shih Tzu father-daughter duo who are as inseparable as they are charming. Bruno, estimated to be 3–4 years old, weighs 12 pounds and his 7-month-old daughter, Rodent—affectionately nicknamed “Ro”—is a petite 7-pound bundle of joy. Together, they make the perfect pair of playful, cuddly companions, each bringing their own unique personality and quirks to the table.Bruno is a gentle and affectionate pup who thrives on being close to his people and his daughter. He loves snuggling on the couch, proudly parading around with his favorite stuffed toys, and going for short walks. While he takes a little time to adjust to new surroundings, he blossoms into a confident and happy companion once he feels secure. Rodent, on the other hand, is a silly and playful pup who enjoys zooming around the house and chasing her tail before settling in for cuddles. She’s self-entertaining and loves barking at her reflection in the mirror, keeping everyone entertained with her goofy antics. Both Bruno and Rodent are crate-trained and feel comfortable in their crates, though Bruno may bark a bit when first crated. They are making good progress with house training, doing well with potty pads indoors, but will need patience and consistency to fully master the skill. Bruno and Rodent are also great with other dogs, and while they haven’t been exposed to children, their calm and friendly demeanor suggests they could do well with kids. They’ve previously lived with cats and are undergoing slow introductions to the cats in their foster home, indicating they could likely coexist with feline friends in their future home.Bruno and Rodent are moderately energetic, enjoying playtime with toys and each other but not requiring long walks to tire them out. A bit of exercise and attention are all they need before they’re ready to settle in for naps and cuddles. They’re both vocal at times, especially when meeting new people or responding to loud noises, so this might be something to consider for apartment living.Bruno is healthy overall but does have a dermoid on his right eye, a condition where a hair growing out of his eye. Surgery is recommended in the next few years. Adopters should be prepared to consult a specialist, with an estimated cost of $1–2K for the procedure. This sweet pair would thrive in a calm, loving home where they can continue their training and enjoy plenty of affection. They’d do well with someone patient and attentive who can help them feel secure while supporting their progress with house training. If you’re looking for a bonded pair of goofy, loving companions, Bruno and Rodent are ready to bring double the love and joy into your life.If you are interested in this dog, fill out an application at this link to get the ball rolling - https://pethavenmn.org/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application/The adoption fee is $800. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Story
Hi! My name is Honey Brooks and I am from Missouri. Honey Brooks is a loving, sweet girl who adores people. It's clear she didn't get as much socialization as a puppy as she should have, so maybe she's trying to make up for it now by getting and giving all the love possible. Because of her lack of experience with other dogs, she can often behave in ways that they might find rude. She enjoys other dogs, but other canine residents will need to be tolerant because she can unknowingly be annoying. She has not lived with a cat, but when around one at the vet, she showed minimal interest, so would likely do fine living with one. Because she was kenneled overly much before coming into rescue, Honey has lost the instinct to keep her space clean and will potty in her kennel. She has learned that when she goes outside, she's supposed to potty, and is working to learn that when she needs to potty, it's time to go outside. She does well with regular walks with her people and going outside on a schedule. She does well overnight when allowed to be with her people. When left alone, she does best gated in an area that is easy to clean. Patience, perseverance and treats are all key to helping her learn. Honey is learning to do stairs. Right now, she can do one or two steps well, and even three with some prompting, but she does have to be carried up and down a full flight of stairs, and when she wants to cuddle with you on the couch, you need to lift her off an on. Luckily, she's small! She loves squeaky toys and has a lot of fun taking them apart. This girl has so much love and affection to give the person who is willing to help her leanr the few things she missed out on as a puppy. From the vet team: I have an upcoming surgery to remove my right eye due to pain caused by glaucoma and the eye is non-visual. I also had masses examined which were found to be non-cancerous. My future adopter should monitor any future mass development with a primary veterarian.

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Starla is a confident, playful, and affectionate two year old, 16 pound Maltese-Shih Tzu mix with a heart full of love to give. Starla came into our rescue via another rescue in Iowa. It is thought that she was given up because she required hip surgery due to a previous injury, possibly being hit by a car. She’s adjusting well to her new foster home and is ready to find her forever family. Starla is confident, playful, and loving. She enjoys sitting on laps and is a true cuddle bug, always seeking close contact with her humans. Sleeping in bed with her family is heaven for her. She loves playing with other dogs and can be found whining trying to get her senior foster brother to play! Starla is an active girl who loves to play and engage with her family. She enjoys running around the yard and would thrive in a home where she can get plenty of exercise and stimulation. She does well with walks but is still learning proper leash manners. A fenced yard would be ideal for her to burn off some energy. Starla is doing great with house training but there may be some accidents as she adjusts to a new home. Starla knows a few commands like sit and stand. She’s very smart and quick to learn, making her a great candidate for further training. She would benefit from some behavioral training, but she is treat-motivated and eager to please. Starla would thrive in an active home, preferably with a family who enjoys outdoor activities. She will do well in a home with children over the age of ten who have had experience interacting with a small dog. She gets along well with other dogs and would love a small canine companion who has a similar energy level. Starla recently had successful hip surgery (femoral head and neck excision) and is recovering well. While she’s already bouncing around more than she should, she requires at-home therapy to support her recovery and won’t be available for adoption until the first week in February. But applications for her adoption are being accepted now. Depending on her stage of recovery, her new family may need to continue performing some in-home therapy after adoption. These are the requirements for Starla’s new home: · Starla needs a family who can provide her with plenty of daily exercise and playtime, including long walks. A secure fenced yard would be ideal. · A family who is home much of the day and will include Starla in their daily activities. · Starla recently had hip surgery and her new family may need to continue with in-home therapy for a while after her adoption. It is imperative that her new family commit to doing so. · A family with children over the age of ten who have had experience with a small dog will be considered. · Starla would enjoy another small playful dog in the family, but it is not a deal breaker. · Starla loves to cuddle and be near her people, and sleeping in bed at night with her family members is a must. · Hew new family should live within 30 miles of Roseville, MN and be willing to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue reunion every September. Starla is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. She may need to complete at-home therapy after her adoption depending on the healing of her hip and her new family must agree to do required exercises. Her adoption fee is $420.00 plus $35.81 in sales tax, for a total cost of $455.81. To meet Starla, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see her and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown PetCo in Bloomington, MN.

Meet Addie (Addison) - a pint-sized bundle of happiness! This 9-pound female Shih Tzu is proof that the sweetest things come in small packages. Despite being small in stature and with the littlest legs, she zooms around her foster parents’ house like she's training for the Olympics. At 4 years young, she's well educated in some important indoor manners. Addie is working on her housetraining, but she has a PhD in Professional Cuddling as well as a Master's degree in Belly Rub Appreciation. She has a sweet personality and beautiful black and silver coat. Some of her favorite activities include sleeping on the couch while you watch your favorite show and gazing out the window. Addie also loves to explore the backyard but hasn't quite figured out what to do on a leash. She rides in a car very well and gets along with other small dogs, cats and well-behaved older children. Addie was previously owned by a breeder and has had some puppies. Although she can be a little shy at first, she is well socialized and warms up very quickly. If you are looking for a compact companion who is equal parts affectionate and silly - she's the one! The following are requirements for Addie’s future family: 1. An adults only home were someone is home much of the day. Applications will be considered if there are children in the home over the age of ten and if they have had previous experience in gently interacting with small dogs. 2. A family who is patient and will continue Addie’s house training and leash training and will expose her to new dog-appropriate experiences. 3. Provide Addie with plenty of daily exercise and stimulation, including walks and supervised time in the yard. A secure, fenced yard would be ideal. 4. A home with another small dog would fine, but she would also love to be the sole focus of the family. 5. Live within an hour’s drive of Minneapolis, MN. 6. Agree to attend the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September. Addie is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. She does have a cataract and retina detachment in her RIGHT eye, has lost vision in that eye, and the vision cannot be restored. Even though she has no sight in the eye, she requires daily drops in the eye to prevent future glaucoma. She will be having retinopexy surgery on her LEFT eye on January 29th to help ensure that the retina in her remaining good eye does not become detached. Addie will be available for adoption approximately one week after her eye surgery. Her adoption fee is $370.00 plus $31.54 sales tax for a total of $401.54. To meet Addie, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see her and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown PetCo in Bloomington, MN.

Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Billy is an awesome, 11 pound, Shih Tzu/Bichon mix who impresses his foster mom more and more every day! He was born May 5, 2023 and lived his life in a wire cage in a puppy mill. He has never experienced the life of a happy, free dog until now. He was purchased from the puppy mill, but in that home he was bullied and terrorized by a large dog. So they left Billy alone in a separate small enclosed room. Consequently his fears magnified and he became even more afraid and timid. He paced for hours at a time. That family had him for only two weeks before giving him to our rescue. But he is now experiencing a wonderful transformation! He has discovered love and freedom. Billy is cautious but very curious as he explores his foster home. He has found toys, and he just loves toys of all kinds! They have become his pacifiers and he often is found nestled amongst them, and chewing on several! He loves sleeping through the night with his foster mom, and also cuddling next to her on the couch. His potty training is a work in progress. It has been difficult because he does not want to stay outside long enough do completely do his business, especially because it’s so cold right now. But he shows promise and will improve as the temperatures warm. Billy loves to run and be free in a fenced yard as he has lots of energy. He is a young dog and will need lots of exercise! He walks well on a leash, so long walks will be a great benefit in warmer weather. Because he is just now experiencing the joys of being uncaged, we feel that his puppyhood is just now materializing. He loves to chew on most anything, he is high energy and loves to run, he is very playful, and very agile. He is also the sweetest boy you will ever find, and soaks up love and attention now that he finally knows what they are! Billy will wander over to you and look at you with his beautiful brown eyes asking to be on your lap, to be petted, and cuddled close. He does enjoy riding in the car. Even though Billy has lots of energy, he is still a timid boy who is fearful of loud, strange noises, and sudden movements and he startles easily. Here are the specifics of what his foster mom is requiring from an adopter. If you meet these requirements, please apply; and if you are lucky enough to adopt him, he will bring you great love, and joy! Billy will make you laugh all day long and sleep cuddled up to you all night! · Because Billy is a very young dog and can live 16+ years, applications will only be considered from age appropriate individuals who will be able to care for him for the rest of his life. · A quiet adults only home. He does not do well with lots of noise or activity or people coming and going. · A home where someone will be with him most of the day—he can be alone for a couple hours at a time, but not much longer, especially while he is being potty trained. Enrolling Billy in a puppy class and introducing him to new, safe situations would also help him gain confidence and form a stronger bond with his family. · Absolutely no kenneling or locking him in a small room alone—he had way too much of that already and it causes him emotional trauma. · A fenced yard where he can run and play and exercise like a puppy. His adopter must be out in the yard with him for playing and as reassurance to him that he will not be left alone or abandoned. · Billy would do well as an only dog, but could also live with another SMALL, gentle well behaved dog in the family. · A family who will allow Billy to sleep with them. · A home within 40 miles of the Twin Cities. · Billy’s new family is strongly encouraged to attend the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion each year in September. Billy is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $420.00 plus $35.81 sales tax for a total of $455.81. To meet Billy, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown PetCo in Bloomington, MN.

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. //   Find our applications at www.midwestanimalrescue.orgAdoption Fee $250 plus taxMazie is an amazing gal. She’s kind and gentle, open to new adventures and ready hang out with new friends and family.  Mazie is great on a leash. She is able to walk a mile or more, a couple times a day, and even seems a little reluctant to enter the house again, loving being in the out of  doors. She’s not distracted by other dogs and seems not to have much interest in them. She was in a house with cats today and had no reaction to them. She’s a good eater, sleeps through the night, knows to do her bathroom duties outside and rides perfectly in the car.  Shes one of the quietest dogs I’ve ever been around. Mazie is hard of hearing and needs to look at her people for calls or direction. It doesn’t seem to bother her at all. She doesn’t ignore requests, she just doesn’t hear them. When motioned to come or eat, she’s Johnny on the spot. As she can’t hear when she is approached, it’s best to gently touch her to let her know you’re there. She’s expresses no aggression whatsoever; it’s just a warm and respectful way to interact with her. Mazie had a haircut today and was described as “extremely chill”. She came out feeling perky, stepping high and seemingly with more energy and vigor. I think she really likes her new look. Like many senior dogs, she is battling a few ailments and has medical needs. Maisy has been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and possible chronic kidney disease. She will need to be on daily suppliments for life for her thyroid which cost roughly $10 a month. Depending on her upcoming blood test she may be placed prescription kidney disease food to try to help slow the progression.   Please feel free to fill out an ADOPTION  APPLICATION by clicking on the button below. We do not accept personal checks. Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance. //
