In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!
Penny is an 8 year old, 10 pound Shih Tzu mix. Sadly, her previous owners gave her to our rescue because they had a new baby and couldn’t manage the challenges of a baby and caring for a dog. It was the only home that Penny knew since she was a puppy, but she has adapted well in her foster home and is ready to find a family who will love her for the rest of her life.
Penny wants to be wherever her foster parents are, and enjoys going on walks with them, playing fetch in the house, and especially enjoys roaming in the back yard, so a fenced yard would be great. She is a friendly, smart little girl and when prompted, will bring toys to her foster parents, and comes when called. She is treat motivated, and learning new things comes easily to her. But she also loves to snuggle with her foster parents under the blankets and is a cozy partner in their Lazy Boy chair. She is curious and is always ready to start the day at a very early time, so hopefully her new family are early risers! Even though Penny is a very active girl, she is quiet, other than letting you know when someone is at the door. She doesn’t like to be kenneled, and really hopes to be able to sleep with her new family in their bed. Penny is house trained, but as with all dogs, needs to be let out regularly and should not be left for long periods of time.
Penny was not raised with children and does not do well with them, so an adults only family who is home most of the day is ideal for her. She is a good passenger in the car, and likes to look out the window, and a family who will take her with them in the car would be great. Penny does not engage with her foster parents’ dog and may be okay with another small dog in the home, but would probably do best as being the only dog.
Penny is a happy, fun, loving, delightful little girl who will be a cherished addition to the right family. These are the requirements for her adopters:
1. An adults only home where someone is home much of the day and who will include Penny in their daily activities. They must be able to take her on walks and provide lots of play time.
2. Another small dog in the house would be okay, although being an only dog might be best for Penny.
3. A secure, fenced yard would be wonderful, but is not a deal breaker
4. Penny has a sensitive stomach and must eat prescribed food. She currently is eating Royal Canin GI. Her family must continue to feed her the prescribed food and not give her people food. She also has allergies, and her adopters must ensure that she receives a monthly Cytopoint injection for her allergies. This is for the rest of her life.
5. Must live within 30 miles of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota.
6. Commit to attending the Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota held each year in September.
Penny is spayed, will have a dental on January 8th, is current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. She is healthy, although she must eat food prescribed for her sensitive stomach and receive a monthly Cytopoint injection for allergies. Her adoption fee is $270.00 plus $23.02 sales tax for a total of $293.02.
