Story
I’ve had to make the difficult decision to rehome my 5 yr-old Shiba due to his bite incidents and my current living situation. Koji is a full-breed Shiba Inu who loves his people and is the best companion on adventures. He is very dog-reactive and is owner protective. To reduce stress, it would be best for him to be the only pet in the home and no children. He has had 4 minor bite incidents and 1 more serious bite incident (human incidents) that resulted in the person needing a stitch. I can describe each situation in detail with anyone interested in potentially adopting him, as well as discuss his behavior/personality in depth. Koji has gone through basic training for basic commands but the next step for us was to set up regular training sessions with a behaviorist in the area. I’m looking for someone who has extreme patience, compliant with force-free training methods, and prior experience with dogs.

DISCLOSURE: The adoptable pets in our program are still in the care and custody of owners who wish to re-home their pet. Owners have enlisted Rescue Well to provide marketing and screening of applicants as a service, free of charge. All fees and adoption conditions are determined by the owner. We advise that adopters do not send payment or deposits for pets prior to adopting.  ***** Tank is bonded with Rusty, 10yo, weighs 50-60lbs, is neutered, is up to date on his vaccines, and is microchipped.  Tank has free roam of the house during the day and sleeps on the couch or on his bed at night.  There are no issues with Tank during car rides.  He does, however, dislike/fear thunder/loud noises. Tank's guardian explains why she has made the difficult decision to rehome him:  Tank's current guardian is fostering him and Rusty and has been since she rescued them from an untenable living situation in December 2023.  Since their foster provider/guardian already has 2 dogs of her own, she must rehomed them, preferably together. Tank's guardian states the following regarding children:  Tank lives with children, ages birth to 7yo, so his guardian recommends his living with children, stating "Similar to Rusty, he likes to be petted but will typically the just relax/find his own spot". Tank's guardian states the following regarding dogs:  Tank lives with dogs, so his guardian recommends his living with dogs, stating "While on walks, he's not too interested in other dogs.  If living in a house with other dogs, I would recommend calm dogs.  I have two small/more active dogs, and Tank doesn't like when they play". Tank's guardian states the following regarding cats:  Tank hasn't lived with cats, so his guardian doesn't recommend his living with cats. Tank's guardian describes him as: Friendly Likes to be touched Affectionate Independent Protective Always at your side Indoor dog Nervous House-Trained Likes men Likes women Tank's guardian describes his ideal future home:   "Tank gets very excited to go outside, so I would love for him to have a fenced in yard in his forever home.  I would also really like to place Tank and Rusty together.  Tank gets a little anxious/nervous (it took about 3-4 weeks for him to get settled in my home), so a calmer home would be ideal. I would also love to keep in touch/could be a dog-sitter if/when needed." Rehoming Fee:  None Location:  Gambrills, MD***** ADOPTION PROCESS  1. Story
Rosie is a senior Shiba Inu who ended up at Animal Control after her human passed away in her home, and no one knew for some time. Her extended family tried to keep her for a few days, but she can be a bit snappy with people she doesn’t know. When the DC SIR Volunteer picked her up she was put into a crate for transport. She doesn’t like crates and let everyone know. When her foster dad picked her up at the transfer location, she snapped and snarled. Luckily, her new foster dad didn't have a crate and allowed her to lean on him and cuddle on his lap on part of the drive. Fortunately, her foster parents have worked with fearful and reactive dogs, so they knew how to build gain her trust. She can go in and out to their backyard to potty without issue. She loves all the yummy raw food her foster parents give her; she can gently take treats from them, but will growl if she thinks they might get too close. Her foster parents see that she is a sweet girl who needs savvy adopters who will take the time to earn her trust so that I can feel safe to be herself. She may not be a big cuddler, but she can bring happiness to a family that will take the time to give her a loving home. Story
Meet Polly; she’s from Bali! (Well, maybe. She’s from somewhere in Indonesia!) Polly was rescued from an Indonesian meat market and has been settling in well to her new life in the USA. Polly is a sweet, curious, and independent girl who loves walks, hikes and playing with toys. She is a fan of puzzle toys, tug-of-war, and we’re working on learning fetch! Polly is mellow overall, but she still gets the zoomies sometimes and needs a chance to burn off some energy each day. She would be a great companion for someone who is active or at least likes walking and playing engaging games with her, but she also spends a good portion of the day snoozing and quietly entertaining herself. Polly has a goofy side, too, and will jump around and “sing” from time to time! Polly is reserved around people and dogs she does not know and takes a little while to warm up, but once she knows you, she is very sweet and loves to hang out with you and follow you around the house. She’s not the best dog for accompanying you to places crowded with other people, children, and dogs, but her active and curious nature would make her a great companion for more peaceful outings. Polly isn’t exactly a cuddle queen (yet), but she likes to sit next to her humans on the couch or curl up at their feet on the floor. She has become more affectionate with her foster family with each passing day! Polly seems house trained. She gets along well most of the time with her canine housemates, but we recommend a meet-and-greet with any other potential household dogs. If you want a friend to keep you company and explore the world with, come meet Polly! My Profile Age and weight: I'm 1 year old and weigh 40 pounds. Good with kids: Unknown Good with dogs: Some dogs Good with cats: Unknown Fenced yard: Yes Suitable for townhouse and/or apartment: I could live in a townhouse, but not an apartment House trained: Yes. Crate trained: Yes Barks when left alone: I’ll bark when you leave, but then I’ll settle down Chews inappropriate items: Occasionally Training: I'm looking forward to training class! Activity level: Medium I need an experienced adopter. Meet Me If you are interested in Polly, consider letting us know by filling out a (no-obligation) adoption application at pgspca.org. Please consult our Adoption FAQ before contacting us. Please check the adoption-show-attendees page to see if Polly will be attending the next adoption show. NOTE: We are an all volunteer group and do not operate a shelter. All of our animals are in foster homes. We are unable to place our animals outside of the Baltimore/DC area.
