Story
If you're into lowriders, Pokey might just be your guy. He's on the small side, 17 lbs., has the short legs of a dachshund and the cute face of a chihuahua. He's trained to use a doggie door and housetrained! Pokey came in with his brother Gumby when their owners lost their home. He came to live with us while he waits on his perfect new family. He is shy, and a bit afraid of new people. A home with a fenced yard will help with socializing Pokey. He need leash training, but with a yard would give him the confidence to go straight out.To adopt this pet, please go to hsnwga.org, 'Adoption' then 'Application for Adoption', to complete an online application to be preapproved. Story
Notes from the foster: She is a talker when she is comfortable. She will tell you when she is happy, sad, excited. She will head butt you when she wants you to hug or kiss her head. She thrives playing with my 9 month old kitty, my 10 year old Dane, and my youngest dog (5 years old). She is a high energy dog and will need to have play time to burn off that extra energy. Sometimes I have to pull her back; she can get going too much. I always supervise play. If she hasn't played enough at bedtime, she can have a difficult time staying still to go to sleep and staying asleep. She is potty trained but is scared of heavy rain. She needs a human to go with her when she goes to the bathroom to both praise her and tell her to go "potty. Potty is her que word. She did go inside twice during the hurricane rain/wind. I think it reminded her of being homeless. She loves to snuggle and often sleeps touching me. In the beginning, she loved to sleep curled up into my side. At the very least, she sleeps on the bed with me and 2 other pups. Most recently she will get down off the bed to lay on the floor but gets back on the bed later. She is crate trained. Kennel is the word I use. She's not thrilled about it, but does know what kennel means and will go willingly if you speak sweetly to her about it, telling her "kennel time. If you don't lock the door immediately, she figures you were not serious about her being in there. So lock it quickly! She loves chewing on nylabones and real bones. She's young, so keeping things she is allowed to chew is vital. She will gather my shoes, and socks occasionally, and put them around her in her bed. It happens more when she feels good and I've been working. She doesn't chew them. She just wants them around her. She eats more than my dogs. She is very active and burns through food quickly. I feed her at least 3 times a day, wet and dry. She isn't a good water drinker...I suspect she didn't have a lot of access to a water bowl in her prior life. Because of that, I add extra hot water to the wet food and put it on the dry like a gravy. It increases the amount of liquid she ingests without having to worry about her drinking as much (since she doesn't). She is shy to people she doesn't know. I live alone and when my boyfriend comes over (every 2-3 days), she barks a lot. She does eventually calm, she just is nervous with him. I think that would be better if he was around more and gave her the chance to get to know him better.
