Story
Love is a 6.5 month old, 29 lbs, gorgeous female pug/shepherd mix with the most charming underbite!
Since arriving from Tijuana, she has adjusted very well during her time in the busy Lower East Side of NYC. She enjoys snuggling, playing with her toys and being a little sidekick to anything you are doing.
She is doing so well understanding “sit,” she sits for everything since day one, and working on other obedience training. She speaks some Spanish like “vene aqui," has learned “lie down” and “mirame/look” when she is on walks!
During her time with her foster family, amazingly she seemed to be completely house trained when left alone for the first time. She has picked up the schedule quickly and is beginning to figure out ways to let you know when she has to go, just don’t keep her waiting after a big meal or excitement since she is still learning and has accidents.
Love is still working on her leash skills, she eagerly looks to you for treats and reassurance the whole walk and is good at choosing to sit if overwhelmed or scared. She is not a puller, she mostly walks on a loose leash, but she is just so excited about seeing new things like squirrels, birds and other dogs/people she may try to leap and bark. Keep up the socialization/positive experiences and having her check-in for treats and pets, and she should become a well-balanced girl.
She is still learning how to welcome guests into the home politely and can have some stranger danger when aproached too quickly. Her forever family will need to continue working with Love to reinforce and advance the progress she's been making.
Love is a sweet, loyal, and intelligent pup that anyone could fall in love with.
Love has done well in a gated area during the day initially, and was ok sleeping by herself in the kitchen for the first two nights. She earned her freedom in the house since she finally escaped the mesh gate after days of patiently sitting behind it. She has no accidents or destructiveness when left alone, other than some puppy curiosity about things left at eye level. She needs a snuggle before bed, but is happy to sleep through the night in her own bed once settled. She does not want to be left alone or excluded, she adores her foster family, but is satisfied with lots of chews and a stuffed kong. She loves to be cozy with her foster family and can often be found with her favorite stuffed cow, snoozing on the couch with her foster brother.
Love is looking for an active to medium energy family, she seems adaptable in her need for exercise but should not be running any distances until she is a year old.
She appreciates downtime and active moments as a young pup!
She would LOVE to be with another dog at home and knows how to mind her manners with a grumpy senior pup. She spends half the week as a solo foster dog and is also happy to just be with her favorite person. Love does very well with another dog, but still has some fears about strange dogs and should be managed around unkown dogs until she has more confidence and trust with her handler. While she has never lived with cats, she met a cat briefly at the pet store and doesn’t try to chase or bark. She has no desire to chase her foster mom's pet mouse when the cage is open on the floor, just sniffs and curiosity and same with her crested gecko siblings. We think she could be really good around small animals with a proper introduction.
We would recommend Love go to a home with older children, she is gentle, but clumsy and learning about jumping as a greeting and taking treats gently. She could be good with younger children, with some allowance for teaching her the rules.
Vaccinated for rabies, DHPP, bordetella, and Lepto. Neutered. heartworm negative, and microchipped. Current on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.
