Story
Meet Kyma, A gentle senior girl searching for a soft place to land and a loving heart to call her own.Kyma is being considered a hospice adoption because of that her adoption fee will be waived. Kyma is looking for a special home willing to provide comfort, care, and compassion for the time she has left. During a recent senior wellness exam, she was found to have a mass in her chest. Our vet team suspects its cancer. At this time, our focus is on keeping Kyma comfortable, happy, and surrounded by love. When Kyma first arrives home, she will benefit greatly from a proper decompression period. A calm, low-traffic environment will help her feel safe as she adjusts. Keeping introductions to new people and experiences minimal at first will allow her to settle in at her own pace.Kyma would do best in a quieter home with no young children. Older children who are respectful and understand dog body language would be a better fit, as Kyma appreciates gentle interactions and having her boundaries respected. She communicates her comfort level clearly, and her future family should be prepared to advocate for her when she needs space or reassurance. She is the kind of dog who finds joy in the simple things—soft beds, kind voices, and being near her people. Kyma doesn’t need big adventures; she just needs a peaceful environment where she can feel secure and cared for. While the time may be uncertain, the bond formed is truly special. Kyma is looking for someone who will give her dignity, comfort, and love through this chapter of her life.If you have a quiet home and an open heart, Kyma would be so grateful to spend her days by your side.If you are interested in adopting Kyma, please send an email to claudiaserrano.co@gmail.com to arrange an initial virtual meet and greet with the pet’s foster parent or a staff member. They will reply to you within 24-48 hours.

Story
Meet Stella Stella is one of three dogs rescued from a backyard breeding situation, where she was living in poor conditions with little human interaction and no prior vet care. Unsurprisingly, she tested positive for heartworm, but she has now completed treatment, been spayed, and recently had a groom, so she’s feeling better and looking her best. When Stella first arrived in her foster home, she was anxious, pacing and struggling to relax. While she bonded with her foster dad, she was fearful of others and needed time, structure, and a change of environment to reset. We brought in our trusted trainer, Daniel, who has been working with her through a board-and-train program while also fostering her. Stella is now living in a household with three adults, a toddler, a dog, and a cat, and she’s learned to trust her new pack. While still a bit timid in new situations, she’s gaining confidence every day. Stella is crate trained, leash trained, and doing well with house training. She thrives on a consistent routine with regular potty breaks and has no accidents in her crate, showing she’s relearned to keep her space clean. She’ll do best with a gradual transition to full roam privileges. Daniel has also begun working on her socialization outside the home. She’s been on neighborhood walks and even to pet stores to build confidence in new environments, and she continues to improve with consistent exposure. The world is still new to Stella, so she’ll thrive with a patient adopter in a calm home who can provide structure and continue building her confidence. She’s incredibly sweet, has a happy personality, and the cutest little prance you’ve ever seen. Stella arrives on 5/16 and is ready to start her new life. Story
Harvey resembles a ripe peach. He is sweet, fuzzy, orange, and sort of round. He is a great companion: quiet, charming, and handsome. He has one wonky ear that points sideways, while the other points up. Harvey is an excellent car buddy, settling himself quietly on his booster seat and paying close attention to be sure that his human is following the GPS and driving safely. He is happy to snooze on a dog bed while his human works, watches TV, or sleeps. During meals, he stands quietly, not begging but just hoping for a lucky piece of chicken to fall. Harvey gets along with other dogs and does not try to steal anyone else's food or guard his own. He is curious about cats but not aggressive. When a cat rudely swats him in the face, he does not respond in kind, but cries for help from the nearest human. Harvey likes receiving pets and scratches and will respond with gentle kisses. He likes to have some lap time every day, but he isn't demanding about it. Five minutes or so at a time is sufficient. He is a quiet dog generally, although he sometimes barks or growls in his sleep. waking himself up. It's very cute. In terms of housetraining, he seems to understand that, in a perfect world, pottying should take place outside. That said, if no one is home (or not paying attention), he will do what he needs to do. Fortunately, he is potty pad trained (with excellent aim) and accepting of wearing belly bands when needed. He benefits from a regular schedule of potty breaks every few hours during the day and at least once in the night. Harvey enjoys slow walks or sniffaris around the backyard (except in the rain). He likes to smell the wind and listen to the birds. He appears to have passing familiarity with commands such as come/let's go/follow me, as well as leave it and no/nope. Harvey has an enlarged heart and a heart murmur which will require ongoing medication and periodic vet visits. He has a bit of a related cough, for which he also takes medication, which seems to help. Harvey has cataracts that render him mostly blind. He does not let that stop him from getting around. He wanders confidently around the house, on leash, and in the yard. He is very good about following a voice to get around and also enjoys exploring on his own. He can go up a small number of stairs, but would prefer to have help going down. He does not love being picked up but will tolerate it for reasonable periods of time if it helps him get where he needs to go. Harvey is a delight to have around. If you're looking for a quiet, orange shadow, come meet him soon! Harvey is approx 9 years old and 12 lbs. fostered in Falls Church, VA please apply at mirishaven.org

Story
Monkey is a 3½-year-old neutered male Pomeranian mix. He weighs 15 pounds, is very active, loves dogs and people, tries to play with dog-savvy cats, and he has only one eye. Monkey came into foster care about 4 months ago, after his much-loved owner passed away. His foster mom calls him Monkey because he is always on the move and getting into things. He is a bundle of energy. If you’ve ever lived with a Pomeranian, then you’ll know that they rarely stop moving. They run, they jump, they spin, they bark, they try to engage other dogs, and sometimes they’ll try to play with inanimate objects. They are very interactive. During TV time, Monkey will launch himself into his foster mom’s lap, regardless of how many other dogs and cats are already there. He will lie back, enjoy the hugging and kissing, and then he’ll jump down and look for new adventures. His foster mom has learned to listen for unusual sounds in the house, which could indicate concerns such as unauthorized chewing (paper products, including napkins, tissues, and cardboard labels). Monkey is not yet reliably housetrained, but he has made great progress. He recently transitioned from sleeping in a bedroom crate to sleeping on a dog bed, with no overnight accidents. He will need continued training, and the best approach currently is to give him frequent opportunities to go outside. For backup, Monkey will normally use a puppy pee pad if one is available. Monkey is perhaps 98% housetrained and rarely uses the puppy pad now. Monkey is an omnivore who enjoys a variety of foods and has shown no bad reactions to anything, including kibble, raw fish, dehydrated or canned pet foods, and fresh fruits and veggies. Monkey has been enjoying a large, fenced yard, which he loves to explore. Previously, he was walked for only short periods in a retirement community, and he didn’t get out much. He now willingly goes for long walks on leash; however, he still needs work on loose-leash walking. Monkey has a long, double coat. He will need to be professionally groomed every 6–8 weeks, unless his adopter is an avid groomer. Ideally, he would be combed several times per week, with nails trimmed at least once per month. His foster’s groomers say that he is a great grooming customer. Monkey’s first owner did not use a crate. However, his foster mom has found that being crated in his own crate is an excellent option, as long as crating is accompanied by a wonderful treat. Monkey is an adorable small dog, but does have anxiety. When he arrived, he was on two behavioral medicines. Now he’s down to one for anxiety. His vet feels he could potentially be weaned off that one, as well. Monkey loves to play with dogs of all sizes and would do best with another canine buddy. In spite of his size, he needs plenty of exercise, whether running in a securely fenced yard or taking his people on long walks. Long periods of alone time may result in nuisance barking or other undesirable behaviors. He craves human companionship, so he would be happiest with a family that is home most of the day. Monkey wants to play with his foster mom’s cats, who ignore him. He would do well with polite kids 5 years old and up with adult supervision. Monkey has so much personality and a great sense of humor. If you give him time, love, devotion (and a splash of patience), he will be your best friend ever.
