Story
Luke is a 2 year old, black maltese pup who has incredible enthusiasm for people and adventure. When we first received him he has been severely neglected and needed lots of care, attention, and grooming. With our help, his foster was able to provide the necessary care and get him all cleaned up and taken care of. This little guy likes to play, explore, and make himself known. If you are looking for an adorable little companion, Luke is the pup for you!

Story
PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH BEFORE APPLYING!Charlie is a 6 year old Maltese-Poodle mix who had a very sad start to life. He came from a home where the humans treated him very poorly, and because of this, he has had to learn what being a normal dog is actually like, which is a long term process. Charlie has been with the rescue for 2 years and has shown immense progress in that time. Charlie understandably has trust issues, which leads to fearful and anxious responses in stressful situations, including biting in the past. Charlie does very well around other dogs and small children. It’s adult humans that Charlie is skeptical of, but he tends to be excited and happy to meet new people these days, and readily accepts pets and scritches from strangers. At his core, Charlie is a happy-go-lucky circus dog. He is vibrant, outgoing, and he has responded well to his etiquette training and knows to wait for permission to approach his food or go out an open door. He loves going for walks, and does well on a leash when in familiar surroundings, but he can get anxious around new people and in new places, and may start pulling and not responding to voice commands and corrections, but this is improving as he gains exposure to the world at large. Charlie is also completely house trained and crate trained. The crate has been where Charlie seeks out safety and comfort, but as time passes and his confidence grows, he quite often leaves the safety of the crate and seeks out the company of humans. He wants to cuddle as much as any good dog does, but he still feels awkward about it at times. These days, he is happy to curl up next to his favorite human and snooze away. One consideration with Charlie is his need to be groomed regularly. Charlie can be a very fluffy boy, so grooming is essential, and should be done every 3 to 6 months. Charlie does not enjoy the experience at present, so it is best to have him sedated and groomed by a professional. At present, he won’t allow me to cut his nails or brush his teeth. Strangely enough, he does just fine with baths. Charlie absolutely has to go to a home with someone who is knowledgeable and comfortable with fearful dogs and the behaviors that come with that. He needs a home where everyone is committed to helping him learn that humans won't hurt him. This forever family has to be patient with him and let him have his time to decompress and slowly come to them when he is ready. His owners will have to be committed to getting Charlie the training and support he needs to feel confident and safe again. Because of how fearful he is, training should focus on positive reinforcement and building trust and not punishment. If you are interested in this animal please start by filling out an adoption application at http://www.CFP-NC.org/adoptions and we will get in touch with you.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Online Adoption Application › This little girl has been through it! I don't know what 'it' is, but she is a survivor. After being picked up as a stray, she spent about 4 days at the shelter before being sprung by a Pawfect foster. She was so severely matted that she had to be sedated to be shaved. She also had a huge burn wound on her back. A Pawfect vet partner gave her a laser treatment, ointments, and pain medication to help her heal. No one knows what caused the burn, but it was awful. She basically had no skin on her back. Thankfully, that has completely healed and she is very happy to not hurt anymore. We were shocked to see that her hair came back! At some point, she had a person because she knows how to be a house dog, loves attention and toys, recognizes household noises, and is potty trained. Now, potty training is 90% the human doing their part. She will have an accident if you don't pay attention to her asking (she will usually go stand by the door, maybe even whine) or take her out regularly. Small dogs need to go out more often than big dogs. They just do. So, you have to be committed to that. She loves to go for walks. We typically do about a quarter mile with her in the morning and at night with quick pee breaks in between. But, she is always up for a walk! She can't do terribly long walks, though, as she does have a typical small dog knee condition (luxating patella).  She is about ten pounds and will require regular grooming every 9(ish) weeks.  She is tremendously sweet and actively seeks attention. She almost seems to prefer kids. But, she can be a biter and has a terrifying growl. So, I cannot recommend her to a house with kids and she needs a very patient/experienced adopter who can work with her on this. No one knows what all she has been through, but it has obviously been terrible. The growling/biting is typically related to possessiveness over her toys or new situations (for example, putting on a harness for the first time). She has 3 different growls that you will need to take the time to learn. One is 'playtime'; one is just talking; and one is her warning. It is imperative that her adopter be patient and forgiving. It will take a long time (more than a few weeks) to learn this conversation pattern. There will be bites along the way, but she's worth it. She learns (and follows) routines well. But, she reacts badly (aggressive) to change. Her adopter will need to be patient while she learns your house rhythm. She does not do well with a crate, but would love to sleep with you. She is great with other dogs. Hasn't met a cat. She's good on a leash, but will pull if she sees a bird or squirrel. Loves meeting new people and dogs on the street. Compared to other small dogs, she's not much of a barker, but she does bark. She takes a small dose of gabapentin twice a day and will need to continue this for the rest of her life. It is a nerve medication that helps with both her knee pain and her stress levels that are a result of her trauma.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 18, 2024, 11:15 am
