Story
More than meets the eye!
Meet Squawkbox! Squawkbox is in a foster home in Spokane, WA. Because “Fur-st Impressions” are very important for an adult dog, schedule a meet and greet with Squawkbox before applying to see if he is the perfect fit for your family by emailing us at Fur-stImpressions@pathofhoperescue.com. A completed Adoption Application will be required after the meet and greet to move forward with Squawkbox’s adoption.
Like his toy namesake, our Squawkbox is a combination of things that unite together. He’s 50% labrador retriever, with the other 50% a mix of chihuahua, miniature pinscher, and American Pit Bull. Athletic and cuddly, Squawkbox blends the best of all dog personalities into one. This loyal pup wants to be with his people, and he is content to be by your side snuggling, running errands, working in the yard, jogging along as you ride a bike, hiking (he does very well off leash), or keeping you company as you work from home. He loves to play; fetch and frisbee are among his favorite games. Squawkbox may take his name from a Decepticon in the Transformers lore, but this goofy, charming pup is one of the good guys. Always delighted to see you, his affectionate nature and genuine interest in what you are doing will bring a smile to your face. Friendly and affectionate, Squawkbox does well with children (including babies!), cats, and other dogs. His foster home serves as the intake center for our rescue, and Squawkbox is the official greeter for new arrivals. His playful antics help put the newbies at ease and get them running and exploring their new environment.
Just like the Transformers, there’s more to this dog than meets the eye! Squawkbox has had extensive obedience training (courtesy of one of his fosters, Courtney of Courtney’s Canine College), and this smart boy has all the skills: come, sit, stay, down, shake, spin, speak, whisper, dance, and place. He is crate and potty trained; his heel and leash walking are on point (he is a joy to walk) and his recall is exemplary. Squawkbox may be the best trained dog we have had in the rescue. He loves to work and enjoys training; it is a fun game for him. Squawkbox is even trained to walk on a treadmill! While he has learned all these skills quickly, we’ve discovered Squawkbox has some innate ones as well. He loves to swim, and he recently tagged along on a hunting trip. Squawkbox was not gunshy, showing no reaction to weapon fire and scanning the sky like he’d been doing this all his life. He eagerly swam out to retrieve the training decoy, ignoring the others set out. Squawkbox will be tested with live ducks soon, and we will share that update.
Squawkbox’s ideal home? If you are looking for an active pup to join in your adventures, a possible duck hunting companion, or someone loyal who always has your back, Squawkbox might be the dog for you! He seeks an active family, where he would get lots of fetch games, walks, cuddles, and love. Kids and dog-savvy cats would be great, and dog siblings would be lovely for this social pup. He would thrive with an adopter willing to continue and reinforce his training to ensure he has the skills that will make him a well-rounded dog. Squawkbox has his eye on a home where he can let his goofy, playful, exuberant, and confident nature shine and embrace his people with all his heart. Is it yours?
Squawkbox is a lovable sweetheart requiring a local adopter who agrees to attend training with him and our amazing partner, Courtney’s Canine College, to help with his quirks (and to make the most of those skills he has!). We know that quality training can be a costly investment, so to help alleviate that cost, we are waiving our normal $450 minimum adoption donation so you can put that towards training instead.
Squawkbox has been available for months, and potential adopters often have concerns about adult rescue dogs having behavior issues or being poorly socialized. We want to be completely transparent; Squawkbox was returned for some very concerning behavior from his first family. But the best part about dogs is that they can learn new skills and Squawkbox is a perfect example of this. Squawk has been professionally rehabilitated by our trainer and has left his old life of fear behind! He is now the happy-go-lucky pup that he was always meant to be. This is why we are waiving his adoption fee in lieu of training. We want to make sure that we set him (and you) up for success! We understand this may be a concern, and that is why we assign every applicant their own personal Matchmaker who will share Squawkbox's entire history with transparency and ensure this dog is right for your family.

Adopting from Path of Hope Rescue
Our adoption process sets us apart. We specialize in learning about you and your family to find just the right fit for you. Our Matchmakers are not only good at what they do; they will also guide you through the entire process.
Our Minimum Adoption Donation is $550 for puppies under a year and $450 for dogs one year and older. We are a WA state registered non-profit and rely heavily on adoption donations to cover the expenses associated with saving lives. Our dogs are spayed/neutered prior to adoption; microchipped with free lifetime registration; and up to date on DAPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines (when age appropriate) and deworming and heartworm treatment/prevention. Adopters can also earn a $100 training refund if they attend (6) hours of any in person training course.
Long Distance adopters (one hour or more from Spokane) may choose to travel to Spokane to pick up their dog or use our monthly transport option, Puppy Delivery Express, for an additional delivery donation of $250. Puppy Delivery Express currently delivers dogs throughout Washington and to parts of Montana, Idaho, and Oregon.
About Path of Hope Rescue
At Path of Hope Rescue, our goal is to make EVERY DOG. WANTED. Our two employees and army of volunteers focus on transporting pregnant dogs and puppies from Texas, the number one kill state in America. The dogs we rescue are in poor living conditions and on euthanasia lists in shelters that are inundated with unwanted animals. We want to give these dogs a chance and bring them to the Pacific Northwest to find adoptive, loving homes.
We are 100% foster based; our dogs are fostered in loving homes where they are house and crate trained and learn basic obedience and leash skills. Dogs experience socialization opportunities with people, places, and other animals, and they receive the attention required to become well-rounded, healthy, and affectionate dogs that they would not otherwise receive in a shelter environment.
Our commitment does not end when the dog is adopted. Path of Hope offers post adoption owner support including information on making the dog’s transition to your home a smooth one; recommendations for Preferred Trainers; advice on pet behavior and wellness topics; Facebook litter groups to keep in touch with fellow adopters; and invitations to local rescue hosted events.
