To learn more about Blaze, please get in touch with dogs@lostdogrescue.org Blaze will be attending one of our adoption events coming up this weekend! To learn more about our upcoming events and to see which event they will be attending, please visit our event page at https://www.lostdogrescue.org/events/ (*please note that the specific event pages are typically updated on Fridays with information on which dogs will be attending which events*) Meet our newest sled dog, Blaze! Like his ancestors, Blaze sure does make quick work of any trail he faces. He came to us in Northern VA from Dickenson County, VA, looking for a new home! Though he may look like a Husky, Blaze has been a chill guy. He has been extremely friendly and easygoing. His coat is quite beautiful and thick, so grooming is a must! Blaze looks like the handomest Husky, and acts like the best gentle giant! Blaze is a friendly guy who likes to greet everyone at their level with a gentle bounce up paired with some doggy kisses! He has done well on leash while in our care and has demonstrated a penchant for treats! He takes them gently and has performed the “sit” command. If you are prepared for plenty of face licks, peppy personality, and doggy antics, Blaze is your guy! Add some blaze to your trail and come meet this buddy today! Please check back for more details soon as we learn more about Blaze!

Story
Meet Belle! This sweet girl deserves so much better than she had; our goal is to make that happen. Belle was rescued back in August and was the victim of cruel, ignorant owners who chained her to the bumper of a car, unspayed, and unprotected from the elements or predators. They didn’t provide her with consistent meals or fresh water, and she had no vet care. When we took her in, she was severely underweight and had multiple litters over the years, living outside with little room to move and no chance to escape. One of her puppies was chained next to her . A local animal advocate became aware of her dire situation and was able to arrange the release of Belle and her puppy. The most frustrating part of this story is that before we secured Belle’s freedom, her owner decided to unchain her and let her run free. She was hit by a car while foraging for food and came into the rescue with a fractured hip, a broken tail, and was heartworm positive. Belle now lives with a mom, dad, and two other dogs and has spent the past 3.5 months recovering and learning the rules of home life. She has made so much progress and is naturally a happy pup. She has a medium energy level and loves to go on walks, spinning in circles when she sees her leash, but she also likes to chill on the couch. Belle is a nice mix of independent and connected to her human…very Husky-like. She follows her foster mom around and is very smart and attentive. She wants to be with you but is fine being in the same room without being in your lap. Belle would do well as an only dog or with a dog of similar size/energy. She worked through some early guarding issues, which is understandable for a dog who was starved and never had resources. She will need a gradual introduction to her new pack and some time to get comfortable, but she does well once established. Toys and bones are lying around her foster home, and she doesn’t guard them, and she takes treats politely in a group without issue. Each night, the pups get a small whipped cream dollop, and Belle always finishes hers first but never tries to get the others' treats. Her foster mom feeds her meals separately, which is always a wise decision with any new dog. Belle has also proven to have good house manners. She is housetrained and is not destructive when left home alone. Her foster mom tried the crate early on, and she wasn’t a fan, so she keeps Belle in a separate room when she leaves home. At night, Belle sleeps in bed with the other two dogs and her foster family. As Belle has settled in and healed, she’s become playful, gets zoomies now, and is not limited by her past injuries. She's warmed up to head scratches and belly rubs and has learned what being a family dog is like. Name:  Dexter        Best Guess for Breed:   Husky/shepherd   Best Guess for Age:    5 years as of January 2025       SEX:   male   Approximate Weight:   49 lbs   Gets Along With:  Other dogs! We have not seen Dexter with kids but he can be tested. Dexter is not recommended for a home with cats due to his breed mix.   Currently Living at:  DC area foster home   Dexter is Looking For:   His forever home! This handsome gentleman needs a new home through no fault of his own. He's eager to once again have his own humans - Huskies are known for being quite attached to their people! Long sniffy walks and world exploration with them is on his wish list, as are a cushy dog bed and quality kibble. But you know what's right at the top of the list? Being safe and loved and under his own roof for all his days. He's in his prime as an adult, well out of the puppy yips, and is more than ready to ease into his new humans' home and hearts. In exchange, they get the immense amount of love and loyalty he is storing up for her new family. What do you say? Is that going to be you?   What My Foster Says About Me:  He's the sweetest velcro dog who always wants to be by your side, sitting for pets and melting onto his back to ask for belly rubs. After getting his zoomies out with indoor or outdoor fetch, he lays down next to my desk while I work. He adjusts his playstyle to my dog's mood, and they've played tag, wrestled, and lazy wrestle (laying down almost cuddling and mouthing at each other--it's really cute). He's a bundle of energy and very curious. Medical: Dexter is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs.  All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care.  After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!    Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken.  All of our dogs are working on their crate training.  TO ADOPT:    The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.  If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog   Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption. sweet young girl ISO fresh start and love! LEAH NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name:  Leah         Best Guess for Breed: Husky and shepherd mix Best Guess for Age:   11 months as of February 2025   SEX: Female  Approximate Weight:  35 lbs as of January 2025; she might have just a bit more to grow   Gets Along With:   Other dogs! We haven't seen her with kids or cats but she can be tested if you have them.   Currently Living at:   Puerto Rican shelter; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to get here on a freedom flight on February 22.   Special adoption considerations:  Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think Leah would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure she can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes.   Leah is Looking For:   Woof! I'm a sato - a street dog from Puerto Rico. I'd like to say I *was* a sato - I would like to be known as a beloved family dog. I'm seeking my own humans for long sniffy walks - the smells in the DC area are going to be so different! - romps in parks - and all the adventures they can dream up. I'm a young girl, haven't seen nearly enough of the world yet, and have all that awesome energy to burn, after all! Going to dog school is on my wish list as well, so I can show how super smart I am.    Most of all, I want to know I'm safe and loved and where I belong. To bestow upon my new family adoring gazes, happy tail wags, and loyal companionship. What do you say? Can you see me by your side? We do not have a shelter. CDCK has a thorough adoption process to find the best possible fit for each of our dogs and cats (we do not operate under a first-come, first-served model). Upon accepting a new cat or dog into the organization, we provide a basic vet visit that includes necessary vaccinations, disease screenings, deworming, microchips, and spay/neuter for dogs six months and older. We do not provide a comprehensive medical exam before adoption. As a result, sickness, injury, and disability may exist unbeknownst to CDCK. Dog specific: Rabies, DHPP, Lepto and Bordetella vaccines. They are tested for HW, Lyme, Ehrlichia, Anaplasmosis.
