Story
File #23-044 Current Foster Location: North Augusta, ON *Please note that we do not typically adopt outside of a 2 hour radius from the foster dogs current location* Please note that Luna is medicated for her anxiety, and this will need to continue after adoption. Hi! My name is Luna and here is what my foster family want to share with you: Luna is a special bundle of love and joy. She has shown much resilience when being let down by humans in the past. She is a bit quirky, according to her foster dad! Luna is very much a "people dog". She prefers to play with her humans over other dogs- her favourite game is tug. She loves to snuggle up on the couch and rest her head on her humans. She loves to travel in the car and enjoys all activities that involve being with her people. She is very loving and is an excellent companion. Luna needs a strict routine and respect for her limitations to shine! A typical day for Luna starts with her meds first thing in the morning and then she has a nap for a few hours before attempting breakfast- this seems to reduce a lot of her anxiety around mealtime. She always has quiet time after she eats. During the day, she loves to play with her foster brother, to antagonize the cats and the foster puppy, sing her husky song and cuddle with foster mummy. Luna has training sessions to work on her anxiety- sometimes this is home alone training, sometimes this is mat/cooperative care training for vet/grooming anxiety, sometimes it is clicker training. Luna gets one good romp outside during the day- she loves to run around and chase her stick toy and play "you can't catch me" with her humans/her foster brother. She benefits from sniff walks on long lines and it's really helpful for her anxiety. She enjoys enrichment toys - she loves a good snuffle ball or stuffed kong. She gets her night meds and her dinner after this and then she snuggles up on the couch or naps on her bed until bedtime. She sleeps in the bed or on a dog beg in the room. Luna cannot be left alone and either accompanies her human on travels, or she will go to a babysitter's house or to daycare for the day. Luna needs calm and predictability more than anything else but she would also benefit from somewhat active owners that would take her on adventures to further build her confidence in the world. She is a couch potato for most of the day but she also does need some solid activity as she is a combination of two breeds bred for high energy activities. She loves to run so even a quieter family that had a big yard or could take her to a private dog park to let her run would be great for her. She would likely do great with a family that likes to hike as all the sniffing helps to her regulate her system. Greyhounds need to sleep about 18 hours a day and she does tend to have more issues with not feeling good when she hasn't gotten adequate sleep. Luna COULD live with another dog but that would not be the best option. Luna cannot be near another animal when there is food around. Her and her foster brother eat in separate rooms with a gate in between and she typically needs to spend her rest and digest time on her bed in the room she has eaten- she is extra bothered by him being near her after she has eaten. She is great on walks with her foster brother but we have seen a few instances of some leash reactivity. Luna is good with dog-savvy cats only that are known to respect the dogs space. Luna would do best in a home with older children, at least old enough to understand and listen to rules about how to safely interact with dogs and to respect her space. She has met an older child and she was very very happy to spend time with him. She would very much enjoy living with an older child. Luna needs patience, predictability, and understanding. Humans have let her down far too many times in her short life and that has impacted her a lot, but she is resilient and with the proper love and care she will continue to get better and feel more secure. With proper management (not letting dogs come near her when she is resting, leaving her alone when she has food, not leaving food on the counter etc.), she is a very well behaved little lady and her future family will be so incredibly lucky to love her. Her family needs to be committed to continuing her training. She cannot be crated and will not be able to be left alone in the beginning- they will need to work up to this when she has had time to get comfortable in her new home. She would be best with someone home all the time for this reason. She is a very special girl and she is very worth the extra work she needs to feel safe and loved and comfortable. She is not a dog you choose because she's beautiful, although she is so gorgeous, she is a dog you choose because you have the ability and desire to provide her with the life she deserves. Above all, Luna just needs to be loved unconditionally. Any love that you show her she will give back to you tenfold. She will be your very best friend.
