Story
A few years ago, this sweet girl was found dumped along the fence of our rescue! She was skin and bones and needed immediate help, so we named her MayDay. Our best guess is she around 6 or 7 years old and a Great Dane/ Staffshire terrier mix. She is very gentle, loves people, and really enjoys car rides. Mayday gets along with males, but is not very playful with other dogs. She would do best as the only fur baby in the home. Since she has been a kennel dog her whole life, MayDay is not pot trained so she will need a family who understands that. This dear girl would love a chance to live out her days in the comfort of a home with a family who will love her! If you want to give MayDay that chance, find us at https://www.tailsoftheforgottenpaws.org/ to fill out an application or on facebook (tails of the forgotten paws)

Story
Ushi is living in a foster home! Please submit an application from our website and email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to learn if you're a match! Scroll through her pictures to see her cute video content! Don't be fooled by that pouty face- it is part of her charm! Ushi is as happy a dog as they come. Ushi arrived to us from Chicago Animal Care and Control as a young pup in March of 2025. This skinny young thing had come down with the "shelter ick," and sadly that turned into a case of pneumonia. We nursed Ushi to health and were so happy when she as adopted the next month. Unfortunately, Ushi's adopters made the difficult decision to re-home her recently. We were glad to welcome her back and in awe of how much she had grown! She is a beautiful young lady, with the exact same pout she had as a puppy. Ushi is beautifully built-- she is long and lean-- and because her adopters did a DNA test we know she is a Great Dane/pittie mix! While it is sad that Ushi has once again found herself in need of a home, the good news is that because she had a home for so many months we know a great deal about her. We know that she is great with all people, housebroken, and crate trained. She knows several commands, and is very well behaved inside of the home. Sometimes, of course, she gets the zoomies, but her adopters described her as a great dog to work from home alongside. They write, "Ushi has so many best qualities. She is sweet, eager to please, learns very quickly, calms down quickly even after periods of intensity. Ushi rarely barks, even at activity out the window, is not prey driven, lets me snuggle her, and self-entertains during the work day. Ushi is doing great at recall exercises outside on a long leash, and is working on "place" exercises at home. Ushi does really well on "place" at the training facility we go to. Ushi doesn't rush or run out the door (we've trained on that). Ushi doesn't counter-surf (we have been careful not to give her the opportunity by not leaving stuff counter edges). Ushi doesn't steal socks, shoes or things that aren't hers, with the rare exception....I could go on." Ushi is now in a wonderful foster home, and her foster describes her as "an angel". When we asked for a description of Ushi, here is what her foster had to say - "Ushi is so lovable! Ushi will make a great pet for a person or family with the right environment. Ideally a yard, with walks, she also does well on runs! She settles in after being outside, and loves to watch the city life and observe, but doesn't bark! She already knows basic commands which is lovely but could benefit more from some additional training, as she is still a puppy! She will melt your hear with her snuggles, cuddles, and tummy rubs. The pouty princess secretly is having a blast despite her face!” Ushi would be a great dog for an owner who enjoys training and working with their dog. She would also be a great dog for someone who already has a dog, as she has great dog-dog social skills! Ushi is a wonderful pup who is a ready-made companion for someone who wants a dog that is young but pretty laid back, polite, social, and intelligent. Which is...everyone?! We hope! Please inquire about Ushi today! Ushi’s adoption fee is $300. This animal is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Story
JACK the gentle giant here! I’m a 3 yr old male Great Dane, (I think I’m a Daniff Dane/Mastiff) about 125 lbs. I live in a foster home with three other dogs & a teenager.✅House trained✅Crate trained✅People friendly✅Neutered✅Microchipped✅Current on shotsI’m a very affectionate dog & love to lean up against you & follow you around. I have free rein in my Foster‘s house though they do kennel me if no one is home. At night I sleep in a dog bed in a bedroom or on the couch. I love to be pet & go on walks. I walk well on a leash though I may pull a little if I see a squirrel so tell me no. I’m really enjoying this white stuff called snow in Wisconsin. I love having the zoomies in the yard & running with the other dogs. I know my name & come. I’m just learning how to be a dog though. When you call me to come inside I hesitate by the door & need to be told again I am WELCOME to come inside as I just can’t believe I’m able to be in a house with my people!I need slow introductions to other dogs one pup at a time. Also I need time to warm up to each dog differently though I do come around.I’m a good boy as I DO NOT chew on things. I’m just starting to learn about these things called toys & balls. I’m still not sure about them. Though I do like this VERY large ball that makes sounds when my foster mom rolls it.I would do best with a patient & experienced dog owner/family who will work with me on commands, provide me daily walks & give me lots of pets! I’d really like a fenced in yard to run if possible.Looking forward to meeting you soon! Apply at Rescuegang.orgDATCP#483538

Story
Meet Zeus, our lovable Great Dane who is nearly 2 years old and still has that playful spirit of a big puppy! This goofy giant doesn’t quite realize just how big he is! Weighing around 130 pounds, Zeus can sometimes be a bit clumsy, knocking over anything in his path (especially when he really wants to say hello!) Zeus is also quite vocal; he loves to express himself with his happy barks or chatty howls or whining complaints, especially when he’s excited, wants your attention , has to do something he doesn’t want to (this is when the complaints start), or is playing with other dogs! His silly personality and expressive nature will keep you entertained and ensure you never have a dull moment. Zeus is good with cats as long as you’re ok having to frequently remind him that cats really don’t want to play with puppies that are 12x their size! He is good with other dogs as long as the other dog is ok with Zeus’s rough and tumble play style and that he is VERY vocal when he plays Zeus is a little much for small kids and small kids are a bit much for Zeus, he does ok with older kids, >12yo up. Zeus is a loyal companion who really just wants to be wherever you are! If you're ready to welcome a big-hearted boy into your life, apply below!! https://new.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/SCGM/Dog

Story
I am 69 lbs, and I am looking for my forever home. Adoption Donation: $500 I am deaf! Aussie is a large, loving girl with an even bigger heart. She’s incredibly affectionate and thrives on being close to her people, always ready to share her time, attention, and plenty of cuddles. Aussie is deaf, but don’t let that fool you — she’s clearly intelligent, attentive, and eager to please. She watches her people closely and picks up on cues quickly, making her a wonderful candidate for continued training and bonding through hand signals and positive reinforcement. She does well with other dogs and all kinds of people, and once she chooses you, get ready for full-time love and devotion. Aussie is ready to be someone’s loyal, constant companion and fill her future home with affection every single day. All dogs are microchipped, neutered, current on all vaccines, heartworm tested (if age-appropriate), and up-to-date on preventatives at the time of adoption. All household members and any dogs from the household need to be present to be able to adopt. A photo ID will be required at the time of adoption. Appointments are recommended. All applications are considered general. Specific animals are NOT put on hold for adoption. Meet sweet Marley, a 1 year old 56 pound Anatolian/Maremma/Shepard mix who is excited to find her forever home. Marley gets along great with other dogs and has discovered she loves toys and chasing leaves. She loves to play hard for short periods and plop down for a nap wherever she finds a spot. She definitely loves her people time and cuddling. Marley will grow into a very large dog. This breed mix is considered very intelligent and loyal. They like to roam so should have a home with a fenced yard and plenty of stimulation for their active minds and bodies. Marley loves to play and explore the outdoors. She takes her job as security guard seriously and most often can be found in the fenced yard just keeping watch over everything. When she takes a break from her patrol, she fancies herself a lap dog. Favorite treats are cheese, peanut butter and ice cubes in no particular order. Marley is being fostered in Wausau, WI with her sister Ava and Moxie. Her adoption fee is $375. She has had her first set of puppy shots, been de-wormed and micro-chipped. Upon proof of spay, her adopter will receive a $150 refund. Story
Introducing Ava, a 1 year old, 58 pound Anatolian/Maremma/Shepard mix who is excited to find her forever home. Ava gets along great with other dogs and has discovered she loves toys and chasing leaves. She loves to play hard for short periods and plop down for a nap wherever she finds a spot. She definitely loves her people time and cuddling. Ava will grow into a very large dog. This breed mix is considered very intelligent and loyal. They like to roam so should have a home with a fenced yard and plenty of stimulation for their active minds and bodies. Ava is the more chill of the sisters and likes to sit and observe before engaging in play. She does better with a slow introduction to other dogs and is slightly more dominant than her sister. Ava is number 2 in the pecking order of her three remaining siblings, but is very submissive to resident dogs (who are smaller). She loves to play and explore the outdoors. Loves being outdoors to be able to “patrol” her area. Will alert to anything that is out of the ordinary. Favorite treats are cheese, peanut butter and ice cubes, in no particular order. Ava is being fostered in Wausau, WI with her sisters Marley and Moxie. Her adoption fee is $375. She has had her first set of puppy shots, been de-wormed and micro-chipped. Story
Introducing Moxie .. a 1 year old 58 pound German Shepard/Maremma/Anatolian Shepard pup who is looking for her forever home. Moxie is very playful and hasn’t met a toy she doesn’t like and enjoys exploring the yard. She loves treats and belly rubs. She gets along great with her litter mates and follows the cues of the older resident dogs. Older children are preferred due to her size. She is curious about cats but respects their ‘correction’. She is being exposed to farm animals such as chickens and goats and has shown no aggression. She loves spending time outdoors, either independently or with her people. Moxie is working on leash training and housebreaking skills. She is super smart and food motivated. She is using a doggie door regularly. She will need a home with a fenced yard because these breeds are known to take a stroll and they do enjoy patrolling their ‘area’. Moxie is queen bee with her siblings but submissive to the resident dogs (who are smaller). She loves to play and explore the outdoors. She takes her job as security guard seriously and most often can be found in the fenced yard just keeping watch over everything. When she takes a break from her patrol, she prefers to relax on the couch. Favorite treats are cheese, peanut butter and ice cubes in no particular order. Moxie is super sweet and a little more reserved than her littermates but it doesn’t take long for her to warm up to people and beg for belly rubs. She is playful but will also chill and just observe. Moxie is being fostered in the Wausau, WI with her sisters Ava and Marley. Her adoption donation is $375. She has had her first set of puppy shots, been de-wormed and micro-chipped and had a round of Simparica and Interceptor. Upon proof of spay her adopter will receive a refund of $150. Please note: the Mareema and Anatolian Shepherd breeds are livestock guardian dogs and they will be big, possibly 85 pounds as an adult. These breeds need room to explore and exercise both mentally and physically. They are loyal but can be aloof due to their guarding instincts. Early training and socialization is crucial as they tend to not be accepting of strangers as they get older. These guardian behaviors tend to develop around age 2. Highly recommend doing research before adopting. If you believe Moxie could be the perfect addition to your family , please submit an application to : https://us12b.sheltermanager.com/service?account=tg2551&method=online_form_html&formid=21 DATCP #524558
