Hi I'm LeeLou! I am a very big, happy girl! I love to play and run around outside, I want so badly to find a home of my own, however, I am a bit of a diva, I need a home where I am the only other dog, I like to have my own space and I'm not too fond of sharing it. Sponsored $25

Story
Laker is a black and white Great Dane/Hound mix and her estimated DOB is 12/30/2017. Laker (who also knows the names Mia or Gracie) was adopted from the Haven but returned two years later, not due to any fault of her own, but because her owners were unprepared to train a dog with resource insecurity. You see, Laker gets along with other dogs fairly well, but she really needs her own space away from other dogs in her home, as she's protective of food, toys, and her bed. She'd do best with a free feeder so she can learn that food is not a limited resource. Laker also did excellent with the kids in her previous home and hasn't had any reaction to cats at the shelter! Her ideal forever home will be able to work around her quirks and provide her with her own space, such as a kennel in a separate room, or ideally not have any other dogs! We at the Haven know that this affectionate, loyal girl is absolutely worth it! All of our pets are fixed, up to date on their vaccinations, and microchipped. The Haven of the Ozarks is open from 9am-4pm, seven days a week. For more information, please email us at havenozarksanctuary@gmail.com, or give us a call at 417-835-3647.

Story
Meet Zani, an adult Great Dane with a heart as big as her breed suggests. Her personality is a delightful blend of sweet and shy, friendly yet gentle. Zani loves nothing more than to snuggle up close for a cuddle, her warmth radiating comfort and companionship. Though her initial shyness may make her seem reserved, give her time and she'll open up, showing her friendly and gentle side. Zani is more than just a shelter dog, she's a friend waiting to share her love. Adopt Zani and bring home not just a pet, but a loyal companion and a source of unconditional love. Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their size in a group setting, and dog meet-and-greets with the adopter's dog(s) are always encouraged. A cat test may be conducted at the adopter's request but should only be used as a general-purpose screening to rule out overt aggression. We always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Recommendations on the suitability of placement with children by their ages are based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets, or cats. Behavioral observations in the shelter environment should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at a given point in time and may not be indicative of a dog's overall mental health. The Joplin Humane Society believes all adopters need to be prepared to invest time and energy into working with their new dog, as animals arrive at the shelter from a variety of situations and scenarios and may have had little to no prior training. Dogs should never be fed together unless it is known that they do not possess resource-guarding tendencies. We always encourage adopters to research the breeds or mixes of breeds before adoption as many can have unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families. Keep in mind that the transition from the shelter to a home environment is stressful for dogs, and the Rule of 3 should be used as a rule of thumb when introducing a dog to their new surroundings. For the first 3 days, fear, anxiety, and stress levels are at their highest; and dogs may appear lethargic, remain hidden, are easily excitable, or have a loss of appetite. In the next 3 weeks, dogs will be actively developing a routine, and new personality traits may appear as stress levels decrease. During this period, it is recommended that adopters limit the dog's exposure to new people and places as they adjust and keep them in a crate or designated quiet room when left alone. Time outside of the home should be short, and crowds or loud noise should be avoided. After 3 months, a bond has developed between the dogs and their new family, and the animal should appear more comfortable in unfamiliar situations.
