Story
Being a German Shorthair & Hound mix, you can imagine that ol' Oscar is a lover of the outdoors! This sweet boy was born in May of 2015 and is still looking for a place to call his own. Oscar enjoys being around people, especially ladies, but he understands what it's like to need some space: your time, my time, and our time! Oscar experiences anxiety and because of this, boundaries are important to him. When his anxiety is low, Oscar is a goofy, playful boy who likes to chase balls, sticks, and rabbits. He loves, loves, loves long walks with plenty of time to let his hound nose get some exercise, and lots of exercise helps work off that extra energy that can make this handsome boy nervous! Because of his love for exploration, Oscar will need a fenced-in yard to keep him close to home.  Oscar is not kennel trained, but is totally fine being left to lounge around the house while you're away.  He's also housetrained, so no worries about that business! Oscar is a very smart dog who knows "sit", "stay", "lay down", "leave it" and he also knows that when he follows these fun words, he gets really yummy treats! Oscar's ideal home will be with an active person/couple who love to explore nature, just like he does, and who will love him like family while respecting his need for boundaries and independence! The suggested adoption donation for Oscar is $315.  We are a 501c3 organization which means that your donation may be TAX DEDUCTIBLE.  Your donation goes toward the high cost of veterinary care for our animals in rescue, as well as providing supportive services to animals in homes. Information about the adoption process:  All adoptions require a completed ADOPTION APPLICATION.  Once your application is approved, we will put you in touch with the dog’s foster to see if you and the pet are a good match.  If so, we will arrange a meeting for you and the pet.  The adoptions for all of our animals will take place in the Omaha, NE area and must be done by the adoptive family in person. We do not ship or deliver. Please Note:  We are a RESCUE, which is different from a shelter.  We conduct veterinary and personal reference checks during the application approval process. We always select the right applicant for each dog, based on the dog’s needs.  If you and the dog are not a good match, we will help you select another dog, or we will keep your approved application on file for 6 months. Story
Odin is a 55 pound neutered male German Shorthaired Pointer who will turn 8 years old in May. He is a healthy, affectionate dog with the playful and loving personality the breed is known for. Odin just arrived in foster care and is currently settling into his new environment. As he decompresses, we will continue learning more about him and updating his profile. About Odin Odin is a very people oriented dog who loves being part of the household. He forms strong bonds with his humans and prefers to be wherever his people are. Like many German Shorthaired Pointers, he has a playful, energetic personality and enjoys opportunities to run, play fetch, and stay active. He also has a softer side. Odin loves to cuddle and burrow under blankets, and his previous family says he will happily curl up in your arms and sleep like a baby. He knows basic commands such as sit and responds well when engaged, especially during play. One of his funny habits is spinning in circles when he gets excited, particularly when he knows it is time to go outside.   Health and Training Odin is extremely healthy with no known medical issues. He is house trained and previously had free roam of the home during the day without problems. Earlier in life he was crate trained and treated his crate as a safe space, although he has not used one regularly for several years. He knows basic commands such as sit and responds well when engaged, especially during play.   Other Dogs Odin has previously lived with other dogs and generally focused more on his people or playing fetch than interacting with them. He does prefer to eat separately from other dogs, as he can be protective of his food if another dog approaches while he is eating. Because Odin has just arrived in foster care, we are still learning more about how he does with other dogs in a home environment and will update his profile as we learn more.   Children Odin has done well with children and has not shown aggression. Because he is an energetic dog, he can occasionally get a little excitable during play, but this comes from enthusiasm rather than negative behavior.   Thunderstorms and Fireworks Like many dogs, Odin does not enjoy loud noises such as fireworks or thunder and may look for a quiet place to hide during storms.   The Right Home for Odin Odin would do best in a home that: • Understands the energy and needs of the German Shorthaired Pointer breed • Can provide regular exercise and activity • Enjoys a dog who is affectionate and people focused • Is willing to help him settle into a new routine Odin is a loyal, goofy, affectionate companion who loves being close to his people and involved in daily life.   Interested in Odin? Story
Brooke is new to Great Plains Pointer Rescue and is settling in while she finishes her vetting. She will be ready to meet her forever family soon. So far, Brooke has shown that she is great with other dogs and does well with children. She is affectionate, loves attention, and wants to be close to her people. She does have some athletic ability and has shown interest in jumping a fence, so she will need a secure six foot fence, invisible fencing, or a structured exercise plan to keep her safely contained and fulfilled. If you think Brooke might be the right fit, complete the adoption application here: ADOPT ME *Please be sure to read the adoption information page on our website before applying for a dog. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.March 18, 2026, 11:20 am

Story
Update 3/11/26: JoJo has arrived to GPPR! Check back in for updates as he decompresses and we learn more about him.  _______________________________________________________________ Jojo is a 4-year-old neutered male weighing about 54 pounds who is looking for a home where he can settle in and show us more about who he is. From what we have seen so far, Jojo is a fairly low key, easygoing dog. Shelter staff report that he handles routine care well, including nail trims and basic grooming, and we have not seen any handling concerns with him. About Jojo Jojo previously lived in a home and came to the shelter when his family struggled to safely manage interactions between him and their toddler. According to his former owners, he nipped at their 2-year-old during boundary issues, but the nips never broke skin. Because of this history, Jojo would be best placed in a home without very young children. They reported that he did well with their two older children. Jojo is house trained and crate trained, and his previous owners report that he does not have accidents in the house. Dog and Cat Compatibility Jojo’s former family reports that he does well with other dogs. He did get scared/overwhelmed in a large play group of other dogs.   He has not lived with cats, so a home without cats or a foster comfortable managing slow introductions would be best. Ideal Foster Home Jojo may be a good fit for a variety of homes, but we are currently looking for a foster home that has: • No toddlers or very young children • A calm environment where he can settle in • Potentially another dog, though it is not required   If you are interested in giving him a permanent home, please complete our adoption application.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.March 18, 2026, 10:58 am

Story
Arrow has arrived and is settling nicely into foster care. We estimate he is around 10 years old, and he has already proven himself to be a devoted, affectionate companion. Arrow loves spending time with his humans and soaking up attention. He is not much of a jumper, but if you are sitting nearby there is a very good chance he will lean right into you for pets. And if you stop before he thinks the job is done, he will politely remind you with a nudge or a gentle paw. He is a fairly quiet boy. His foster family says he rarely barks. When he is in his kennel he may softly “sing the song of his people” for a bit, but he usually settles down fairly quickly. Like many pointers, Arrow is very enthusiastic about food. Meals and treats are a highlight of his day, and his foster mom says he definitely gets a little “jiggy with it” when he sees food coming his way. If you are looking for a companion who enjoys relaxing by your side, keeping you company around the house, and riding along as your car buddy, Arrow may be your guy. Arrow came to us with a reported history of seizures. Since arriving, we have completed an extensive veterinary evaluation and diagnostic testing to look for underlying causes. So far, his results have been very encouraging and nothing concerning has been identified. At this point, his veterinary team suspects the previous seizure activity may have been an isolated event, and we will continue to monitor him while he settles in, gains some much needed groceries, and enjoys life in foster care. Stay tuned for more updates about this loving boy as we continue to learn more about him.   Complete the adoption form here: ADOPT ME *Please be sure to read the adoption information page on our website before applying for a dog. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.March 13, 2026, 2:46 pm
