Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Zara 6278  really blossomed over the summer. She has put on some weight and eagerly looks forward to a pack walk….even with a man holding the leash (it took her awhile to become comfortable around men)! Zara is still very shy about eating so I put her bowl down and walk away or feed her outside by herself. She will take a treat readily but runs away with it and eats it in privacy.    Zara has become very friendly with company and looks for attention. She gets excited around other dogs and does have a high pitched bark. Zara is protective of her home without being aggressive. She doesn’t seem bothered by squirrels or cats.    Zara is afraid of thunder and if there’s a storm in the night, you will have a new companion in your bed. Snuggled right in.    Zara will crate and likes to be in her crate. But not with the door closed. Zara is still a little shy with men, but doesn’t run and hide anymore. Ideally, she would be happiest in an all female household as an only dog or with a male. She can be bossy with other females. Approved adopters may email her foster at dianepmcintyre@gmail.com  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 6, 2024, 4:55 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Please contact Tammy (tnhuck@yahoo.com) for more information about this pet.Update 10 June 2024 Pancake is up to a whopping 45 pounds!  Fortunately, she is food-motivated so she is making really good progress.  The vet suggested that she gain about another 10 pounds. Her sparkling personality is also shining through even more.  She loves to play fetch with tennis balls, chew on Nylabones, and play with furry squeaky toys, which she also enjoys shredding.  And that’s okay, she is a happy young lady who can entertain herself, given the right toys.  She does love interaction with human beings and she will come over for attention and follow a person around the home.  And she is a good guard dog with a loud, authoritative bark! To burn off some of her energy, I have taken Pancake for short (1-2 mile) runs around a local park.  She gets distracted easily so it is a bit of a challenge, but she does enjoy the extra time outside and she is noticeably more poopered out at the end of the day.  Her leash manners are improving but they still need some work.  Sometimes she walks with neighbors and their dogs, so she is learning socialization skills. Pancake has attended two adoption events and done reasonably well.  She is a little anxious in new situations but she should get better about that as her confidence grows. 4/4/24. Pancake is a really sweet 3.5 year old white shepherd.   The best part about Pancake is her personality.  She is affectionate, house-trained and crate-trained.  She is well-socialized with people and she generally ignores or tolerates other dogs.  Her foster sister Pawlina 6087 is the same way, so they usually hang out in different parts of the living room.  Pancake enjoys being outside and going for walks; the world is her oyster!  Her leash manners could use some work – she is stronger than she looks and she likes to sniff pretty much everything. Unfortunately, Pancake has exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, or EPI.  This means that she has to be on a restricted diet and have enzymes on her food.  The condition is easily managed but it makes her upkeep a little more expensive and time-consuming, as the enzymes need to be added to her food with warm water, and then the mixture needs to sit for at least 20 minutes before serving. We are working to get Pancake’s weight back up to normal and to figure out what diet will work for her, as well as her enzyme dose.  She had a vet appointment in March and she did great.  Her blood test came back negative for heartworms, and her fecal sample was negative for parasites.  She also had her nails trimmed.  She came into rescue with some sores on her legs; they are healing nicely and the vet removed the blue tape on them that can be seen in some of the photos.  Her right ear doesn’t stand up straight, and the vet said perhaps she had a hematoma in her younger years, but it adds to her charm.  Pancake behaved perfectly the entire time at her doctor’s appointment, she had no problem being handled by the vet and the techs. Pancake is currently living in a condo and she is not a barker, so she would do fine in any type of household.  She visits her foster cousins on the weekends in a single-family home, and she doesn’t play in the yard with the other dogs, she prefers the company of people. Pancake is spayed and up-to-date on shots.  She is living in Arlington, VA and she plans to attend adoption events in Northern Virginia.  Approved adopters may contact her foster parent at tnhuck@yahoo.com.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 6, 2024, 4:55 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Snow White was found as a very pregnant stray. She lived in the shelter for 1 week prior to delivering her puppies. She had 6 healthy puppies in the shelter. Her and her puppies came to stay with us at 3 weeks old. She was a fantastic mama! So much we call her mama dog. Her puppies have all found fantastic homes, so now it is her turn. Snow White is one heck of a dog that LOVES to play. If you have a ball or jolly ball, all her attention is on you. She burns a lot of energy playing fetch. She absolutely loves the game. She will settle and rest once tired. She will lay next to you and sleep. She is fully potty-trained and crate-trained. She is progressing in obedience training. Walks pretty good on a leash, but gets distracted and is reactive. Would recommend older kids. She is ok with dogs. She does not play or interact much with dogs. She is indifferent with them. She does try to boss them around a bit. She takes time to warm up to strangers, it is a must to go slow and build her trust. Once she trust you she is a companion for life. Very reasonable size and weight. Eats and drinks well. She will need to be played with daily. Fetch is her favorite game. If you would be interested in meeting this sweet girl or if you have questions please reach out to jlg06@hotmail.com, she is currently in Chesapeake VA.  Ideal home for her would be grown children, adults. No other pets or animals. She would do fine with an older lazy dog that just hangs out. She does have a prey drive. Would not recommend small animals/farm animals. She would benefit from a fenced yard to run in. She LOVES to run and play ball or play with a jolly ball. So someone who has time during the day to play with her. She also loves to get in our pool to cool off. She has zero desire to play with dogs.    If interested don't hesitate to reach out to us at the email above. You will need to come and meet her in Chesapeake, VA.  First step is to be approved by the rescue, then we can setup a meet and greet.  Snow White looks forward to meeting you and finding her forever home! Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 6, 2024, 4:55 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.    5.24.24. Charlie Brown (Fitz) is back again and is so looking for a family to call his own. He exhibited some separation anxiety in his previous home and was just not a good fit with the family.   He does not show any anxiety at his foster home but has the company of 2 other fosters in his room/ crate area so may do well with a calm resident dog in his future family.  He has continued to fill out and is now a solid muscular 80-85 lb pup with an adolescent brain so zoomies can be intimidating as he runs around you.  He tries hard to please but being an adolescent he sometimes has difficulty focusing on his fosters commands.   He will need continued structure and leadership to enable him to be the best he can be.     Previous comments below still apply to meeting new people and other dogs.  He is comfortable but curious with cats, so dog savvy cats would be fine with him. If you are interested in learning more about Fitz and are an approved experienced dog handler please contact me at rodschlemm@gmail.com.  He is being fostered in King George     3.23.24  Re-introducing Charlie Brown, now called and responds to FITZ.  Fitz was returned through no fault of his own because the resident dog did not get along with him.  He is now a 1 yr old  80lb big strong adolescent boy that needs an experienced handler to continue with his training establishing  consistent boundaries.  .  He has been E collar trained on the basics ( sit, down, come, off) and does well unless distracted then needs redirecting. He is highly trainable and catches on quickly, but will test his boundaries.  He is potty trained, does well in his crate after initial protesting, likes to hang out with his people in the house, and rides well in the car. .  Being food motivated he will counter-surf given the opportunity, and can clear a 4’ baby gate from a standstill ( very impressive!)  Fitz requires slow and proper introductions to new people, preferring no one reach out to him or get in/touch his face until he is comfortable with them.  He is enthusiastic meeting new dogs, and comes off too strong setting the stage for conflict.  So slow and proper dog intros are needed.   At the bottom of this profile I left his initial fosters description of him as many of his characteristics are the same.  I also updated some pictures and attached a video of him with our other foster, but kept some of his original pictures as well.  He is a striking looking boy that gets attention whenever we are out.     Charlie Brown 6345 is a very handsome 8 month old neutered male GSD. Charlie ended up in a shelter because his previous owner was not able to care for  him.  He is very social and energetic. He is playful and enjoys toys and chew items. Food is his jam and he is very treat/food motivated. Charlie is a great size but looks like he may be a big boy with big ole paws!  Charlie goes into his crate but will let you know he isn't happy about it but usually settles down after some time - he has improved a ton in a short time. He loves affection from those he knows and if he hears a bag ruffling he comes running! Charlie has a normal interest in cats but there's a possibility he can coexist peacefully. He would be best in a home with German Shepherd experience and someone who will invest in his training/obedience as he is your typical adolescent GSD.  Charlie can be mouthy and jump in excitement. He will make a wonderful addition to a lucky family! Charlie does take time to warm up to new people and prefers strangers not to get down in his face or touch his face - no small children. Once he is comfortable and trusts you he is a SUPER sweetheart!  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 6, 2024, 4:55 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.6/22/24. This beautiful young lady is Sabrina.  Sabrina is estimated to be between one and a half to two years old. Sabrina was picked up as a stray and landed in a rural North Carolina shelter.  It was evident that she had been nursing puppies as she still had some secretion of milk from her mammary glands, but her pups were never found. She is house trained, crate trained, chipped, up to date on all her shots, has just been spayed, walks good on a leash, rides well in a car and gets along great with our two resident GSDs Ruger and Prince.  Sabrina and our other foster Major are best buds; Major and Sabrina will play until their tongues are hanging out, take a good nap then start all over again.   Sabrina is still very much a puppy and will need lots of good chew toys, so get your training tools ready to help this little girl get on board with the house rules.  Sabrina is the sweetest girl, very smart and eager to please, super affectionate, loves to get hugs and loves to give hugs, is always up for snuggles, kisses and belly rubs; she will definitely steal your heart in short order!!    Sabrina loves her toys and will carry them with her as she travels around the house. Sabrina will pick her person and become their shadow.  She is protective of her people and home and will bark when she sees a stranger approach, or when that vacuum cleaner gets too close to her people or toys. Sabrina is a little cautious of strangers’ especially men; having patience is of the utmost importance until Sabrina feels more secure in her new environment.   Sabrina will need a fenced yard, an adopter who has considerable GSD experience, little alone time and she will do well with older considerate children. Approved adopters can contact her foster at bhriddick@yahoo.com   Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 6, 2024, 4:55 pm
