Story
Sunny is a beautiful and intelligent shepherd with a sensitive disposition and a desire to work closely with her person. Sunny was originally found as a stray, so we don’t know much about her life before she made her way to HSWM. Sunny is most at home sniffing and exploring outdoors, but she also loves to cuddle, play with a ball, catch tossed treats, sleep in bed with her people, and is fully potty trained! We have limited information on Sunny’s experience with other dogs, but suspect she might prefer hanging around mature, neutral dogs. Sunny has had some exposure to livestock (cows, horses, chickens) and was respectful of these critters during these brief encounters, but we don’t know how she feels about cats.When Sunny first arrived at the shelter the influx of unfamiliar visitors and a busy shelter environment made for an overwhelming experience. Making all new human friends was a scary prospect for Sunny! Over time, we’ve discovered that Sunny feels much better when she can be introduced to new people outside and allowed to approach at her own pace. Once you’ve earned her trust she’s quick to ask for affection with a nose nudge or a gentle paw and would love to show off some of her tricks in exchange for a treat.Sunny displays some behaviors that are typical for shepherd-type breeds, but may require management and training in certain situations. When out in a yard or run Sunny tends to move forward and bark when approached by people or dogs. In typical shepherd fashion, Sunny is alert and vigilant to changes in the environment and puts on big vocal displays when she’s not so sure about a new person or experience. For this reason, we suspect Sunny might have a harder time adjusting to life in a very busy neighborhood or in a household with a lot of foot traffic. The behavior team at HSWM is available to work with interested adopters to develop strategies and management techniques for introducing Sunny to new people and supporting her transition into her new home.
