Story
Our sweet sweet loving gentle amazing Sully girl. It is now time for your next chapter . Sully is approximately 10 months to one year-old. And weighs 18 pounds. She came to us after being hit by a car and was just running the streets. No chip not spayed, no tags, no owner. We believe she is a frenchton. French bulldog boston terrier mix. She has a wonderful demeanor and is just the sweetest girl. She is nervous meeting new dogs and people at first but that lasts all of 20 minutes and then she is everyones bff. She loves to play but is a gentle play partner. She loves to cuddle and give lots of kisses. She likes to be geld like a baby. She is usually quiet but gets really excited and barks at breakfast time or sometimes when you first get home, its just excited barking but she is not a big barker. She does not like to be crated at home but crates in the car well for car rides. Sully has hydrocephalus. It does appear to be mild. If you google hydrocephalus dogs, it is going to tell you all these terrible things that, after rescuing hydro dogs for the last 15 years, exist in a small percentage. For the most part Sully acts like a regular dog, just a little special. She does not have any seizures, she gets up and down off the couch . She gets in and out the doggy door. She is a little slow at some things and has a mild depth perception impairment from the hydrocephalus, but she lives a regular happy life and does not appear to be in any pain and has not had any neurological symptoms that some Hydro dogs get. Sully has also recently had an FHO . Because her hip was shattered from (presumably ) getting hit by a car. Currently, she is not putting weight on her left rear leg but the hope is that she will do so in the next 6 to 8 weeks as her scar tissue heals. She will get better and better at using this leg over time but she gets around very well. Her sutures come out on the 20th and she will be ready to go. She needs a special family. Ideally a home with a fenced yard, if children are in the home that they be gentle and dog savvy. The perfect scenario would be a home that is experienced with special needs dogs , especially hydro dogs bc they need a little extra patience ,love and understanding. As well as a home that is willing to help her through her healing journey as her leg will not be fully fully healed for several weeks still up to 3 months before seeing true progress. We all adore her. She is such a wonderful little girl with just a sweet sweet soul. We can’t wait for her to find her forever family. Story
Currently fostered in Texas Meet Bruce a 4 year old french bulldog weighing 30 pounds. Please read ENTIRE bio! Bruce was in San Antonio animal care center after being on bit quarantine. He is wiggly , funny and strong. He knows sit, ,paw, waits for treats and food, and has good potty and fantastic leash manners . He is an excellent dog for he right person. He needs a home familiar with the breed and willing to put some time and training into Bruce. Bruce needs to be an only dog unless he is adopted by an extremely experienced adopter willing to get a behavioral trainer in to work with him. Bruce in not an aggressive dog but does have some of the not always so great traits of a bully breed. He is not an overly dominant dog either. Bruce meets dogs on walks and in the visiting yard with a happy body, wanting to say hi, wiggle, downward dog, sniff the bums, he is happy to see the other dogs. When another growls at him, he actually will turn his head downward and away, and back away from the dog. His problem is territorial behavior and jealousy. He does not like to share his toys, or his person. If he has a toy, that toy is his and he does not want a human or a dog to take it from him. If a dog tries to interact with him or sniff a toy while he has the toy, he goes after the dog. If he is in your lap getting pets and cuddles and another dog or person, tries to come in, he will growl and snip at the air towards the person. The odd thing is he gets super duper sad after the fact and knows he did something wrong and he immediately wants love and attention and to play with said humans, dogs etc. He is such a sweet and loving, cuddly boy. Bath, nails, paw and nose cream, vaccines, going to the vet, meeting people on walks, everyone can love on him, get in his face, I can take his food right out of his mouth and he zero reaction. He is not an aggressive dog, he just has this one really bad and really big deal behavioral issues but honestly aside from that he is a perfect muffin. We all love him so much. He can be stubborn at times. He does tend to bark a lot when you first leave the house. He appears to have some mild separation anxiety but he does calm down once he can't see or hear you anymore. He needs a home where his human is home a lot. He wants to be with his human as much as possible. He would be best adopted to a person with experience and NO KIDS. Which sucks because again he has met kids, he loves kids on walks and visiting but we do not know what unpredictable behavior he may have once he gets attached to those kids and deems them "his" and friends come over etc. So better safe than sorry and we say no children. He really has a huge heart and a lot of feelings. He is a sweet soul and I think maybe with some training and redirection with the right person he could really be a gem of a dog. Story
Penny | French Bulldog | 3.5 years | Female *We cannot guarantee breed nor age. Temperament: Sweet, high energy, incredibly intelligent. Activity Level: Medium-High energy. Vetting: Vaccinated (DH2PP, Rabies), spayed, microchipped, dewormed, on flea/tick/heartworm prevention year-round. Penny is on Fluoxetine and Gabapentin which has helped significantly. She also has allergies to turkey, chicken, duck and lamb (developed a significant rash on her belly). She had a small reaction to fish (very tiny rash) so we have been avoiding that protein as well. So far she seems ok with beef, kangaroo and pork. Due to the breed's susceptibility to health issues, a home with knowledge around French Bulldog’s common issues is essential. Pet insurance is a must! Future owners should take precautions to avoid overheating, limit stress and seek immediate medical attention if she experiences respiratory distress. Housebroken: Yes. Good with Dogs: Penny is fantastic with dogs when out and about but can be protective and territorial at home. She may show resource guarding behaviour towards other dogs indoors, so a single-pet household is necessary. It’s important to note that all introductions to new dogs should be done in a careful and controlled manner. Good with Cats: No. Good with Children: No. Prey Drive: Yes. Response to outdoors: Penny adores walks, hiking and swimming, and she’s always curious about the world around her. She’s the perfect adventure buddy! Crate-Trained: Yes. Resource Guarding: Penny resource guards with other dogs but not with humans. Response to Commands: She knows sit, stay, heel and fetch. She has been working hard in a board and train with the amazing Dog Hero to learn more fantastic skills. Are they vocal: Not overly barky but she loves to express herself with grumbles and grunts. She will, however, alarm bark at knocks and doorbells. Leash Etiquette: Penny is an excellent walker both on and off-leash, with solidly developing recall and a penchant for stopping to sniff around. Transportation: Penny loves car rides and is always up for an adventure! Introducing the charming Penny! Penny is a slow burn of love. It is very important to note, however, she will be very apprehensive at first. In fact, for the first three weeks in foster care, she had to be kept leashed at all times as she wouldn’t allow us to put a leash on her collar without screaming. She has some issues around physical handling and needs trust with her handlers to be built slowly and patiently. After some time getting to know us, she did eventually relax and we are now able to do whatever we need for her for the most part. Once she gets over her initial fears and inhibitions, Penny is a real treat! Penny can be a snuggly sweetheart who adores affection and belly rubs. However, again, it’s important to take this kind of affection very slowly with her until she feels fully at ease. She loves to start her day with playful energy, and if you’re going on an adventure, she wants to be right there beside you! Whether it’s hiking, swimming or just lounging around, Penny is your loyal companion, ready to jump into any family activity. With her playful spirit, Penny will keep you entertained with her antics. She’s known for her joyful flips when excited and her adorable baby dragon that she snuggles with at night. Her quirky sideways glances and delightful sounds will have you laughing in no time! Shaun from Dog Hero, who has been fostering and working with Penny, will provide guidance on how to set Penny up for success and continue her impressive development. If Penny sounds like the perfect match for you, please fill out a Canine Adoption Application on our website at: covetedcanines.org/application

Emmy Lou

English Bulldog

Female, 2 yrs 1 mo

(when grown) Med. 26-60 lbs (12-27 kg)

Story
Emmy Lou is an estimated 2 year old female English Bulldog mix who was found stray, and unclaimed at Animal Services. She is a compact 60lbs, lean, but strong. She is a very sensitive girl and wasn't showing well in the busy shelter environment, and sadly was at risk of euthanasia. We pulled her into our rescue where Emmy has flourished, and showed us what a wonderful, silly, playful and affectionate girl she is! Emmy Lou is generally pretty independent and low energy. She is a very typical English bulldog mix - lower energy, snuggly, gets cold easily but also overheats easily, brachycephalic, snores very loudly, and can be sensitive and particular about a few things! With her family, Emmy is very playful, enthusiastic, and zoomie for about 10 minutes, twice daily. She loves to snuggle, and is comfortable with manipulations, including paw cleaning, face wrinkle cleaning, general facial cleaning after eating/drinking, pets, and even baths. With strangers, Emmy is more reserved and defensive. She does not like strangers reaching for her without consent, and does not like feeling pressured- including from the vet! Emmy is very neutral with strangers as long as they don't put pressure on her - she's actually a wonderful patio pup, but does need to be advocated for. Emmy warms up quickly with neutral interactions, and lots of treats! With dogs, Emmy similarly does best with neutral introductions. She can be sensitive to dogs coming into her space too quickly, and prefers neutral walks and respectful space. She had done well in a very busy canicross setting with many excited dogs that were respectful of her space, and lives with 3 respectful foster brothers. We've observed that she can be a bit more of a bully to her anxious/sensitive middle aged foster brother, compared to her other 2 more confident foster brothers, however she takes redirection from her humans well and engages nicely with all 3 with supervision. Emmy has not met cats. Emmy is curious/ eager to bully the chickens that live on the property with her, although they have always been safely fenced outside her reach. We have observed that Emmy Lou can be a resource guarder with other animals. In a multi-dog home, feedings are done separately, and Emmy gets her own space when playing with toys. Emmy can also guard dog beds, her space on the couch, and other objects she decides to claim- unexpected ones have included a sweater on the floor she decided to sit on, and a stick she decided was her toy. Her foster home is an experienced home with obedient and respectful dogs, so managing resources and redirecting Emmy when she starts showing warning signs has been easy for everyone to peacefully coexist, however potential adopters with other pets will have to be aware of subtle body language cues and have a management plan to prevent and conflicts around resource guarding. Emmy has done very well the past 4 months without any conflicts, and has made progress with her resource guarding, but her forever home should be aware and ready to manage this if they have a multi-pet home. For this reason, we are also looking for a home for Emmy without young kids. Emmy Lou is very food motivated, eager to please, and quite sensitive. She enjoys training and is easy to redirect with verbal cues, food, and tone of voice. Emmy is a sensitive girl, and any raised voices she perceives to be directed at her, and can get defensive. While Emmy is easy to manipulate when she's in her usual happy-go-lucky mood, if she is defensive she will not tolerate collar grabs or manipulations. Emmy is easy to coax out of a defensive state with verbal encouragement and treats, however her future adopters will have to be aware of how much pressure they are putting on her, and be mindful that she may interpret their actions differently than they may intend. Emmy is also sensitive about potty breaks in the dark, the cold, and loud noises. She is very good about bathroom breaks, but can sometimes refuse walks in the dark! Her safe space is in her crate in the house, and if she's feeling sensitive she will seek out her crate. Her other favourite spot is being on a pillow, on the couch, snuggled in a cozy throw blanket! Once she's comfortable and cozy, Emmy will snuggle and snore up a storm! Emmy is a silly, playful, and funny girl! She loves shaking and ripping up stuffy toes, loves her treat ball and other food toys, loves to squeak squeakers, and loves her single ingredient raw/dehydrated treats to chew up! She is low energy, but loves to run around with a toy when her people wake up in the morning, or when they come home from work. She quickly gets tired and loves to snuggle her people in her corner of the couch. She also loves to "supervise" in the kitchen, but will lay on her dog bed if asked to. She has a hilarious "resting grumpy face", but loves to give kisses to her people. MEDICAL DISCLAIMER! Emmy Lou had a severe adverse reaction to what is thought to be the general anesthetic during her routine spay surgery. She developed pyothorax and aspiration pneumonia, causing her to be hospitalized for 10 days on oxygen, an IV with antibiotics and fluids, and with a chest tube, which cost us over $13,000 for treatment with a 50% survival rate. English Bulldogs are not healthy dogs, and are genetically higher risk patients for routine surgeries and procedures. They are also dogs that will likely need dentals in their future. Due to Emmy's severe adverse reaction, any future dentals should be done at a veterinary dentist with a anesthesiologist present. English Bulldogs are also very sensitive to heat and breathing issues. Emmy Lou will very likely be more expensive to maintain good health than other breeds of rescue dogs, and she will need an adopter prepared to cover those costs for the duration of her lifetime, up to 15 years. Adopters should have previous experience, or have done thorough research into the health issues associated with English Bulldogs. Pet Insurance, or having a very large savings fund for emergencies is required. Taking a Pet First Aid course may also be an asset. Emmy Lou Summary: 2-3yo (f) English Bulldog mix -Good with dogs -Untested with cats -Older kids -Ignores strangers, happy to coexist, doesn't want strangers applying pressure. Happy to be affectionate on her own terms with strangers. -Crate trained -Good in car -Good on leash -Low energy, but very playful and gets short zoomies twice daily. -Non-vocal, but snores very loudly Personality: Silly, playful, joyful, snuggly, sensitive, funny, independent, defensive Behaviours: -Resource guards toys, food, space, furniture with other dogs. No observations of guarding with people. Easy to redirect, however management must be considered in multi-pet homes. -Sensitive and easily defensive: Emmy is a sensitive girl and any raised voices she thinks she is being yelled at, and if she is in a defensive state she can be nervous of collar grabs or sudden manipulations. Emmy is also defensive for some medical handling, especially by strangers. If she does not feel threatened, and with her people that she knows, Emmy is easy to manipulate and touch everywhere (we've even done rectal temperature checks without her being defensive). Health concerns: -Brachycephalic breed, take extreme caution in hot/humid weather, and restrict exercise when needed -Some allergies present in shelter, and post-hospitalization. Suspected chicken. Not extreme - did well on Performatin Lamb Kibble, and Blue Buffalo Salmon. -Had extreme response to spay surgery, may be sensitive to general anesthesia. Any future surgeries (dentals, etc.) will need to be done at a veterinary dentist with an anesthesia specialist. English bulldogs are notoriously unhealthy breeds. While Emmy Lou seems to have better breathing, and our vets think she's healthier than a typical English Bulldog, her future adopters should be prepared for budgeting for higher than average vet costs.
