Sometimes we get the most unusual phone calls that prick our heart with the intensity of a desperate need, even if they are a thousand miles away. Trooper, and some of his friends from New Mexico have entered our world and we are trying to help. There's a rural shelter in a small town in New Mexico that very few people stop in to adopt. But yet, the drop offs continue to build, and adoptions do not match the number of dogs in the shelter. A very dedicated and passionate rescue woman that drives her own independent tractor trailer, moving loads of cargo in freight from state to state, from job to job, has learned that she must stop in at that shelter and check out what they have on the euthanasia list. She is an independent lady who champions the underdogs. She gave Critter Cavalry a call and told us about a number of small breed dogs that are under twenty pounds that needed a rescue to save them. Critter Cavalry signed up. Trooper is an adorable 6 month old small breed boy that we think is a Chiweenie. Trooper, is a beautiful boy who is six months old and weighs 8 pounds and will most probably top out as an adult boy at 15 pounds. He is cuddly, shy and great with other dogs. Like any baby, he’s still figuring it all out, but his sweet nature makes every step of the journey a joy. Flash’s story started in a cardboard box outside a hardware store in a small Tennessee town. A elderly man was handing out puppies lije Halloween candy. Three were left. Thanks to a kind rescue couple, 3 puppies went home with them and all 3 are in loving foster homes and looking for the perfect future family. Flash is now safe, adored by his foster family but seeking a forever family who will treasure him. Flash is expected to stay under 15 pounds and will likely grow into those signature Chihuahua “radar ears” to match his big personality. He may be small, but his love is anything but. Flash will be ready to travel from Nashville on April 10th. Mr. Bob may be small in stature, but he carries the heart and wisdom of an old soul. This 5-year-old Chihuahua began life in a crowded backyard breeding situation, one of 17 little dogs trying to make sense of a world that didn’t offer much comfort. When he was finally relinquished and welcomed into rescue, everything changed — though for Mr. Bob, change takes time. At 22 pounds (with about five to shed), this sturdy little gentleman is working toward a healthier lifestyle with proper diet and gentle exercise. But while his body is solid, his heart is tender and still learning to trust this brand-new chapter. Mr. Bob is shy, soft-eyed, and deeply observant. He’s the kind of dog who quietly studies his surroundings, trying to understand how he got so lucky to land in a calm, loving foster home. He’s discovering that kind hands, cozy beds, and soft voices are not temporary — they’re his new normal. He has proven to be gentle and patient with children and small dogs, though he does appreciate having his own peaceful corner to nap undisturbed. After years of living among too many dogs in a chaotic space, personal room to relax is something he treasures. He absolutely loves to cuddle and prefers to sleep close to his human at night. Fully crate trained, he sleeps soundly without a peep. The leash is still a mystery to him and a bit frightening. He prefers quick potty breaks and then hustling back inside where he feels safe. We suspect he never had much outdoor experience before. With patience and reassurance, he will continue building confidence at his own pace. Mr. Bob would thrive either as an only dog or with just one calm companion. More than anything, he longs for a steady, devoted person who will be his life coach — someone with patience, understanding, and unconditional love to help him blossom. He doesn’t need chaos. He doesn’t need adventure.He just needs someone who sees the quiet beauty in a shy little soul learning how to trust.
