We do not have a shelter. CDCK has a thorough adoption process to find the best possible fit for each of our dogs and cats (we do not operate under a first-come, first-served model). Upon accepting a new cat or dog into the organization, we provide a basic vet visit that includes necessary vaccinations, disease screenings, deworming, microchips, and spay/neuter for dogs six months and older. We do not provide a comprehensive medical exam before adoption. As a result, sickness, injury, and disability may exist unbeknownst to CDCK. City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue is not responsible for payment of any vet care, including known and unknown medical conditions once a cat or dog is adopted from us. Dog specific: Rabies, DHPP, Lepto and Bordetella vaccines. They are tested for HW, Lyme, Ehrlichia, Anaplasmosis. Most cats and dogs will have a house-training accident in the initial days in their new home and we cannot guarantee any pet is housebroken or crate trained.

Story
Meet Scout! This sweet boy was abandoned by someone in a Good Samaritan’s backyard — the family woke up one morning and found him there. So they took him in and started looking for his family to no avail, but they quickly discovered what a good boy he is. He has wonderful house manners, rides great in the car, and was an instant hit with their three dogs and kids. When no one responded to claim him, they contacted Worthy Dog for help. Scout has been in his foster home for almost two months now. On intake, we discovered he was heartworm positive, so he likely lived as an outside dog and had owners who did not protect him. Thankfully, that life is well behind him now. He’s done well in his foster home, living as part of a pack. He’s crate-trained and housetrained and has never had an accident in his foster home. He is a fun-loving, confident, active boy who loves everyone he meets and is a champion cuddler. His foster mom describes him as a love bug. ****** We checked in with his foster mom, Renee, for an update: “Scout is such a happy dog, full of energy, and very loving. He and Ryder got along great from the very beginning. They both love to run and chase squirrels in the yard. Scout will even run the fence and play with the neighbor’s dog. He is an active boy who would do well with a pack or as an only dog. A fenced yard would be the best fit for him as he loves to run. I harness him for walks, and he does better than with just his collar…less pulling. He still needs some work on his leash skills and is just excited to go and do! He’s only 22lbs, so very controllable. Scout has never met a stranger and is a very friendly pup. He’ll make a great family dog and is good around kids. He has met my grandkids many times. He loves his toys and will play fetch with the kids in the yard. He gets so excited when they visit, he will get the zoomies while playing and is pure joy. He may jump in excitement when he meets you, but we are working on a firm “no”, “down” and sit. He’s doing well with his commands. This sweet boy is very affectionate and loves to cuddle. The closer he is to me the happier he is. He will sit beside me and would love to sit in my lap always if I’d let him. He is crate-trained but needs a treat and encouragement to go in. I only crated him a few times and started leaving him out for short errands. I leave him out all the time now. I trust him and he’s had no issues in the house. He usually sleeps on the couch or watches for me at the front window. Overall he is a good boy with a lot of love and energy. He would do well with an active family that wants a dog who can join them in social activities. He’s very adaptable and just wants to be part of the mix.” ****** Scout has been treated for heartworm and is ready to start his new life. He needs a fun, active family and would LOVE a doggy playmate in his home. He’s confident enough to be an only dog but needs a family committed to his playtime and exercise.  Apply today!    BREED ESTIMATE: Feist/Terrier Mix GENDER: Male APPROXIMATE WEIGHT:  22 lbs  APPROXIMATE AGE: ~  5 years COAT TYPE: Short coat ADOPTION FEE: $425 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/neutered/microchipped - treated for heartworm LOCATION:  Alexandria, VA   FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. Story
ESTIMATE WEIGHT FULL GROWN: lbs ESTIMATED AGE: KNOWN WITH DOGS: He loves playing with toys and with his much larger Great Pyrenees brother and sister! He has a lot of confidence when taking on dogs six times his size-but it's all play. He likes to hang outside with the bigger dogs and supervise the goings-on in the neighborhood. He wants to play with his similarly sized Papillon brothers, but they aren't interested. He does respect them when they tell him to back off, however. Thus, we think he'd be fine with cats as long as they can send the same message, and if his adopters enforce respect for other animals. We do not see evidence of a prey drive. KNOWN WITH CATS: See above KNOWN WITH KIDS: Not sure but is friendly with the adults he meets. KNOWN COMMANDS: He understands "no", "out", "potty", "treat" (of course), and will come when called both inside and outside. KNOWN HOUSEBREAKING AND/OR CRATING: He's doing great with potty training! He goes outside and he (mostly) hits the pads we have for him inside. He makes it through the night without accidents. We are working on the crate training for when he needs to be home without supervision. He doesn't love it, but is getting used to it, especially when he gets a kong with peanut butter. KNOWN LIKES: He really likes his people. He LOVES to snuggle, and he prefers to sleep in bed with us at night, but we are crate training him too. He stays with me during the day while I work, and sleeps at my feet. He is definitely a power napper. He loves to climb into the toy basket and grab a stuffie to carry around or try to entice the other dogs to play with him. KNOWN DISLIKES: None so far, other than not loving being alone in the crate. Notes from the foster: He's pretty quiet, at least so far, and has not barked much at all, other than in play. His coat is very short and smooth. We don't think he'll shed much, or if he does it will be minimal. He would be a great companion for many household situations! As much as he loves his people, he likes to be with the other dogs too - so he would do well both on his own and with other pets. Have not seen any evidence of aggression or resource guarding- meals, treats, or toys.
