Story
Bentley is a 1.5-year old male Dutch Shepherd mix youngster (most likely Belgian Malinois) who was picked up as a stray by Stanislaus Animal Services. This poor puppy was so traumatized at the time of intake, but is now safe with rescue in a wonderful foster home, where he can decompress and begin to feel safe and loved.  Bentley is a sweet little boy, and didn’t hesitate to come to our volunteer upon first greeting.  He is now fully crate trained, and does well with other dogs. Initially, he was very shy when meeting other dogs, but has become a pretty confident pup, and loves to run and play.  His first night in his foster home, he slept in his crate all night with no issues. He loves his people and at times wants to be right next to you, waiting for pets and lovin. Bentley will require a committed and loving human who will make him a part of the family, providing the care and attention that every young pup needs. Only older dog-savvy children 8 and above in an adoptive home will be considered. It will be necessary for an adopter to have recent successful experience in raising a GSD, Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherd, or other large breed working puppy. An adopter who will begin and continue his obedience training based upon positive reinforcement is recommended, including positive steps to discourage unwanted behavior, to ensure he remains on the path of a well-behaved canine companion. We are currently screening applications for the best possible fit. ##1805152##

Story
08/19/24 14:59Dog behavior has improved. Inside of kennel when split from other dog inside of kennel, I am able to leash as she is now approaching the kennel door and bows her head to get leashed and is no longer biting at leash or displaying any aggressive behavior. She does not hesitate to come out of kennel and once she was outside I was able to do a full and invasive handling. She did well with me checking her teeth, pickiing up her front and back paw, checking and pulling her ears, petting her stomach and even allowed me to pick her up . She seeks attention when called with a low tail wag, a submissive head bow, a relaxed mouth and calm eyes. When walking around she ignored other dogs barking at her and just sniffed around with a calm body posture. LB07/09/24 15:58Since sharing a kennel with other dog has been getting better inside the kennel, comes when called and will lick hand. When I split them up and tried to leash her by herself her behavior went back to biting, striking, and jumping at leash. She eventually was leashed and froze again and did not want to getout of kennel. I then left the leash on and lifted the divider so the other dog can calm her down. I then split them up and tried to pull her out again and she went out without an issue, walked around and sniffed. I did basic petting and put dog back. Use caution when leashing. LB07/02/24 08:27ON June 27, Dog was at back of kennel, trying to bite leash when I tossed it in first time, shaking, lip licking, puckeing lips. Had to lasso to leash and once leashed she freezes and did not want to move out of kennel. Showed her another dog she came in with and was more motivated to go outside of her kennel. Outside of her kennel she is tail tucked but had no dilated eyes, relaxed mouth, rubbing on the dog she came in with. When getting overwhelmed she went under the legs of a volunteer who was sitting near by. Only able to do basic petting on back, not able to fully restrain. Moving her in with other dog. LB

Story
This Bordeaux has legs!Seriously, legs for days. Listed as a 9 month old German shepherd, Bordeaux is a most unusual boy. He’s very tall and lanky, with high hips, a smallish head and an oddly wiry topcoat. Definitely a unique blend! What could this German Shepherd be mixed with...? Maybe a mix of German shepherd and some Irish wolfhound, or maybe even Airedale? His behavior and physicality are not very like a German shepherd puppy: he’s wonderfully calm and gentle, and has sort of a gangly gallop when he runs. Youngster he may be, but just an easy boy with a mellow temperament. He has kind of a magical zenlike effect when you spend time with him.Bordeaux really lights up when he sees other dogs and has a very playful but sweet energy. He has been flying under the radar for too long, possibly because of his size and breed- but if you know anyone who is looking for a calm and affectionate dog, please share him.He really is special.Regular Adoption Hours:Tuesday-Saturday1-4PM160 Hitchcock RoadSalinas, CA*** ALL SATURDAYS IN OCTOBER11am to 4pmReduced adoption fees $50 dogs$25 cats
