Story

Who is my BEST dog available...? Depends what you mean by "best". If I had to choose though, it would be Betsy Ross. Hands down. Betsy is our second longest resident (Tilly being the longest) who also came from South Carolina pending euthanization. She's our pack leader in our home and her role here is to help keep other dogs in order. Betsy gives solid corrections, though, still need to be monitored as not all dogs respond well. If there's another dog in the home that likes to play "Chief", I will not let them socialize or have limited contact depending on a few things. For example, they can only be inside the house together. Not outside. I've had a few of those. Has a very low-key personality where I could be doing 20 million things that day, and she'll be quietly nearby - being patient. Betsy is forgiving and very loyal. Other people could be petting her but she'll keep her eyes on me like; "They might be petting me, but you're still my number one." Perhaps it could be a little off putting for some adopters since they want her attention, but you could earn this perfect, loyal pooch all for yourself. While she might not be overly affectionate, Betsy gives big smiles and tap dances everytime you come home. It's the greatest thing to come home to because you truly feel missed and appreciated. She's middle-aged but not ready for retirement and does enjoy walks while being good with the leash. But, she's perfectly content just staying home, too. This makes her very flexible for many levels of activity in homes. Her training is great. She's a great listener, goes in her crate when asked or when she knows it's time (meals), doesn't destroy the house, and keeps potty outside. If I have to correct her, she responds well. Think her only true downfall is she gets overstimulated with going outside and the overdrive makes her reactive to certain things. But, inside, she couldn't care less. So, with that, listening isn't as strong but we communicate with touch and she does well with that. Like helping her snap back to reality. Overall, Betsy is a super easy dog where it's kind of like when you want a furry companion minus half the work. You'll still have to make sure you establish boundaries ESPECIALLY if you have other animals in the home. Make sure she knows who's leader in the home and don't let her take over because that's when dogs start becoming a menace. Do I think Betsy could turn problematic? Yes. Like most dogs in an unstructured home. But, Betsy is pretty easy going and compliant. She isn't a rebel... except when she isn't ready to get up in the morning. It's like dragging dead weight off a bed. Betsy is due to retire as our pack leader and would love to see her go into a good home soon. She's flexible with the environment. Perhaps a retired person, or someone with kids. Other dogs in the home are fine but would do best with laid-back companions. Slow introductions are a MUST. She needs about 3 -days with new dogs which is not uncommon. All dogs should be introduced slowly. Story

I am and I am NOT surprised all at the same time that Tilly (originally Tempest) is still with us. She has been with us since June, making her the official longest resident. We'll start off the the "bad" before we get to the "good" because Tilly is SUPER rewarding. Tilly is a great dog who is bright and very loving. Unfortunately, her past has set her up for a difficult future around strangers and learning how to trust or know what is safe. This poor girl was shoved in a crate half her size and tossed to the side of the road. When animal control found her, she was (rightfully) fearful and had a difficult time coming around meaning they were going to euthanize her for high FAS. (Fear, Anxiety, Stress) We agreed to take her in and we don't regret a thing. She has a huge sense of "Stranger Danger" meaning she can appear a little spooky for the season towards strangers by barking and acting tough. However, that's not her at all once you get past it. We have been working hard with her and she'll now "huff" at people in the distance. She's been going to an Elementary School and doesn't give anyone a hard time in the car due to a postive association. "Huffing" is a dogs' way of saying; "I'm not sure about this object." Potential Adopters can typically get past her walls in an extended meet or a second meet. However, many have flaked on her or gave her false hope. One woman adopted her originally and did really well especially with the grandkids. Unfortunately, that woman was diagnosed with something very difficult and had to give Tilly back. Tilly also has attracted a few questionable adopters so we have been keeping a close eye on her. Another downside for her is that she (use) to submissive urinate. While she no longer does it for our family, she may restart in a new home. So, she'll need some patience. But this girl is SO rewarding despite her face always looking sad. Tilly is the most affectionate and caring dog we have. If you're coughing your lungs out or feeling sick, she boops your cheek and/or checks in with you. She loves booping before giving kisses. Tilly loves rubbing herself on you and giving you the best of love with her soft fur and wet kisses. Goofy, affectionate and caring for those she trusts. All those concerns from before just wash away. Being a Hound Mix, she does have some energy and not a complete potato. However, the big scary world can be much some days so adopters would need to find less populated areas to walk and have a fenced in yard. Tilly does great in cars to travel to those areas. She even handles well on the leash. Can be stubborn about going in her crate, but quiet. Housebroken**, and non-destructive. Loves doggy friends as long as they don't bully her and absolutely LOVES kids. Can cat test upon request though don't suspect it would be an issue. This girl just needs someone understanding who doesn't have new/random people coming over all the time. Limited people are fine, like grandkids coming over. "TILLY" 1 Year Spayed Female Hound Mix (Unknown) Adoption: $150 Located in Willoughby, OH Available for Out-of-State Adoption within 2 hours **Due to behavior, we want to be able to reach her quickly should anything ever happen** Loves to play fetch, tug and jump for toys. Submissive but will stand up for herself. No separation anxiety presented. Needs a low-key human who doesn't really want to meet strangers either. VERY important to give slow introductions to other humans and NOT let them put their hands in her face the first moment they meet her. Keep it on her terms. Ottie is an amazing dog for many homes and he's looking for a forever home that doesn't mind making a little accommodation. Please share his post so he can find his forever home. "OTTIE" 3 Years Old - German Shepherd Mix Neutered Male - Vaccinated/Microchip Dog, Cat, and Kid Friendly This handsome guy was found roaming the streets in Madison(OH) and was relinquished upon return to the previous owners. While not very trusting of strangers, he is very friendly especially when a trusted handler is present. When you bond with Ottie, he'll be at your beck and call. He has a more laid-back personality, but with the right friends, he'll more than likely show his goofy self and ready to play. His best friends are Maxx and Tilly who are also looking for a home. Ottie is also very communicative when a need must be met (potty, water, food, or when something is wrong). While not every dog will get along with everyone, he provides solid corrections and boundaries in hopes to avoid conflict. Crate Trained Housebroken Great Leash Manners Knows Sit, Paw and Understands Basic English You can talk to him and he basically understands, not sure how else to describe that. This is a really easy dog to bring home and will be a great family member after decompressing. Ottie likes his space on occasion but doesn't mind snuggling up. He knows the "Good Morning" command when sleeping out which is giving big affection, pulling the sheets off of me, then kicking me out of bed. It has its uses if you're not a big morning person. Like every great dog, there are some quirks to address. **!! Ottie is one heck of an escape artist from opening windows, doors and making those fences look invisible. Ottie cannot be left unattended and will need a specific escape-proof kennel which can run about 300+ (we will not authorize adoption until one is provided for him depending on circumstances). But no worries about leaving him unattended because he has separation anxiety! (The escaping is because of this so... yeah). We have very escapable fences and he doesn't run off because (1) he's bonded to someone and (2)there's nothing in the environment that makes him want to remove himself unless Betsy is bullying him - and it's totally justified. That's the only accommodation he needs so you can keep your sanity! **No apartments due to likely having a noise complaint/destructive behaviors when left alone. While totally healthy, Ottie has Hip Dysplasia in the genes as one of his offspring had it very early on. This means he's very likely to get it later on. We are keeping him on joint supplements and managing his diet. Speaking of "diet", we have confirmed Ottie has a grain allergy. He's currently in Wellness Core Ocean Grain-Free. Okay, so he has his quirks... but how can you pass up a nearly perfect dog?

He was picked up and brought to the shelter after being found running loose as a stray with no background information. He is a happy boy and was easy to leash and get out of his kennel. Gilbert may be housebroken since he went potty as soon as he got outside. He is very treat motivated and can get a little jumpy for treats but knows sit, shake, and lay down. He loves playing with toys but doesn’t really want to bring them back to his person. He was tested with a female Husky mix on 8/10. Gilbert approached with fully body wiggles and play bowing. He liked to wrestle and play chase. Gilbert had a rougher playstyle and was too much for the other dog so the interaction didn’t last too long. He was tested again with a large female dog on 11/27. He didn’t notice the other dog at first and did tense up a little when the other dog came from across the yard and body slammed him (playfully). He quickly play bowed and started playing though. CBHR Feedback; - Playstyle will not be for every dog. Will need either correction and taught how to play with others. May not play with other dogs in the same manner if presented in a calmer environment. - There are no immediate concerns for this dog. He was picked up and came to the shelter with a healed scar on his back. He can be jumpy for attention and is overall a higher energy dog. On 12/04 he was observed kennel surfing, panting, and pacing so he was started on anxiolytics. He was able to be moved to a real life room as well which seems to have helped a little with his high FAS level. He spent some time in an office with staff on 12/24. He really enjoyed playing with toys (tennis balls and stuffed squeaky toys) but did need monitored and they had to be taken away because he was chewing on them. When out for a walk Preston was jumpy for attention and tried grabbing the leash several times but was very easy to redirect. He was tested with a female dog on 11/13. Preston was amped, heavily pulling, tense body, and slightly piloerect. He was muzzled prior to being allowed in the yard. He was pushy but didn’t show any aggression. He was tested with another female dog on 11/16. He showed the same behaviors as before and we had him muzzled like before as well. The muzzle was removed and he was kept on leash. Preston sniffed the other dog and kept licking her back end. CBHR Feedback; - This dog is suffering from kennel syndrome which is the mental decline of a dog in a particular environment. Once the dog is removed from the environment, dogs often make a 180 in their behaviors for the better. - Homes must provide slow introductions for other animals. Preston may not be well socialized to other animals and doesn't know how to introduce himself. - Preston will need basic training.
