Story
Emily is a beautiful 4-1/2 year old female Coonhound mix who was surrendered by her family on November 15, 2023 because she was an accomplished 'escape artist' who frequently went on solo adventures from her fenced-in yard. Emily has a black/tan/white short smooth coat, a long tail, and an adorable black-and-white face with tan eyebrows, a black button nose on her white muzzle, and large black velvet ears which frame her face. This beautiful girl may look familiar to many of our HSOV volunteers and Facebook fans since she had previously been brought to the HSOV on May 22, 2023 for a very sad reason. Her beloved mistress had passed away at that time, so Emily lost not only her 'person' but also her home as well. A family member reported (in May 2023) that Emily was good with children and that she was also good with other animals (but didn't specify if that included both cats and dogs). Emily is housebroken and weighs approximately 55 lbs. We took preliminary photos of Emily the day she arrived in May 2023 and those pictures broke our hearts to see how sad she was that day. Emily was understandably very frightened and nervous when she found herself in a small kennel after she had always enjoyed a wonderful home with a family who loved her. These photos were taken late in the afternoon on May 23rd when HSOV Volunteer/Staff Amy Rogers offered to take Emily for a leisurely stroll to the shelter mailbox at the end of our driveway. The 'paparazzi' planned to accompany them on the walk but Emily was a little too apprehensive, so we waited until she was walking back toward to the shelter building and snapped these pictures. Emily was spayed on June 13, 2023 and was also given rabies vaccine. Emily is currently being housed in our front office and has her very own soft plush bed to snooze in while she assists our staff (and sometimes sleeps on the job). We want Emily to enjoy out-of-kennel freedom (and extra TLC/attention) to help her know that she is very much loved and that she will find the perfect home soon. Emily is still somewhat shy but is beginning to relax a tiny bit more each day. We will take updated photos of Emily asap.

Story
Spice is a handsome 2-1/2 year old male American Pit Bull Terrier mix who was found on Colegate Drive in Marietta Ohio around 10:30am on the morning of October 31, 2023. Fortunately for Spice, a Good Samaritan was able to persuade him to accompany her to the safety of our shelter and away from the busy road where he was roaming around. Spice was not wearing a collar, and he was not microchipped. Spice has a dark brown/brindle-and-white short smooth coat, a long tail, and a beautiful symmetrically-marked face with dark brown eyes, a dark chocolate nose, and short floppy ears. This big boy was understandably very nervous when he was brought to the HSOV. It broke our hearts to see how scared and terrified he truly was. Our compassionate staff and kennel techs are doing their best to calm his fears and to help him realize he is among friends who care about him. These photos of Spice were taken after hours on the evening of October 31, 2023 when HSOV Executive Director Amy Rogers and HSOV Volunteer/Board Member Tracy Lynn Moore teamed up to spend time with Spice and to accompany him for a short walk in order to begin gaining his trust. Our photographer stayed a safe distance away and snapped his pictures 'from afar' so as not to make Spice nervous or feel that he was being pursued. Spice is a friendly boy but tends to be reactive. Spice weighs 55 lbs and has already been neutered. We hope that someone will recognize this boy and help us reunite him with his family. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Spice was held for three days so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Sadly, nobody called or came looking for Spice.

Story
Betty is a beautiful 3-1/2 year old female American Pit Bull Terrier mix who was brought to the HSOV on August 2, 2023 by a Good Samaritan who found her on Brandy Drive in Marietta Ohio. Betty was accompanied by her best friend Veronica who is most likely her sister. Neither Betty nor Veronica were wearing a collar, and they were not microchipped. Betty has a black short smooth coat with an over-sized white bib on her chest, a long tail, and a pretty face with a narrow white stripe on her forehead, a chubby muzzle, and short floppy ears. Betty was 'in a family way' when she entered our shelter and is very pregnant. We anticipate that she will be giving birth to several babies in the near future. Her bestie/sister Veronica is the self-appointed mid-wife since she is always as close to Betty as possible. Betty weighs 75 lbs. Thanks to HSOV Volunteer Tracy Moore for taking Betty & Veronica outdoors (together of course) so that they could have updated glamour photos taken on August 11th. We had taken preliminary photos in their kennel a few days after they arrived, and they were snuggled up close to each other on their large blanket-covered kuranda bed. We had late-breaking news soon after we posted Betty's Petfinder 'baby bump' photos on the evening of August 13, 2023 and will include a birth announcement: Betty gave birth to six healthy puppies. All of the babies and momma Betty are doing well ... And "Aunt Veronica" is also doing well. UPDATE: Four of Betty's babies survived but, sadly, two of the puppies passed away during the month of September 2023. Her four remaining puppies (Curie, Einstein, Franklin, and Newton) have thrived and are happy, playful youngsters who will soon be leaving for their new homes. Betty has been separated from her puppies, and she is ready to begin the next chapter of her life. She will be spayed in the near future and will soon be looking for a fabulous home of her very own. Betty was spayed on September 9, 2024 and was also given rabies vaccine.

Story
Sheldon is a gorgeous 4-1/2 year old male Chocolate Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull Terrier mix who was originally brought to the HSOV on November 22, 2022 by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden who picked him up on State Route 555 in the Cutler Ohio area. Sheldon was wearing an orange/silver reflective collar but there was neither an id tag nor a dog tag on his collar .. And he was not microchipped. Sheldon has a luscious dark chocolate brown short smooth coat with snow white markings on his neck/chest/belly, a long tail, and an adorable face with expressive brown eyes, a milk chocolate nose, and short floppy ears . Sheldon appears to be housetrained. Since Sheldon was not reclaimed, he was neutered on January 11, 2023 and was also given rabies vaccine. Sheldon was adopted on March 25, 2023 but was returned a week or so later because he was nervous around babies (and perhaps with toddlers/small children) and shows his fear by growling, so we recommend that Sheldon be placed in a home with adults or older children. He is truly a fantastic lovable dog who will be a terrific companion with his new family. We've also learned that Sheldon does NOT do well with cats, so he should not be placed in a home where he would have contact with them. Sheldon gets along well with most other dogs. Loud noises/crowds/new people tend to frighten him. Sheldon has become a favorite with our HSOV staff and volunteers. He has become a social butterfly who loves to snuggle with his people friends and enjoys 'butt rubs' and short walks. Sheldon is often seen sitting quietly on one of our outdoor benches with an HSOV volunteer and enjoying out-of-kennel time. Sheldon has gained some much-needed weight since we first met him in November 2022. He weighed 74.4 lbs on October 25, 2023 and looks fabulous. Sheldon walks gently on a leash. Sheldon was fostered-to-adopt on November 10, 2023 .. Although his potential adopter loved him very much, Sheldon was returned to our shelter on December 5, 2023. That individual felt that their home was not the ideal one for Sheldon since he was exhibiting severe separation anxiety issues, and the family was away from the home too much to fulfill Sheldon's need for being with his people. Sheldon tended to get into mischief (only when he was alone too long) and chew/destroy items in the home. These photos were taken on December 6, 2023 when Sheldon was spending time in our front office with his people friends and assisting shelter staff and greeting visitors .. before being returned to his former kennel. Sheldon is looking for a home (without feline friends) where he could take long walks with his family and snuggle up next to his new best friends .. and where he would not be left alone very long. If you believe you have the perfect home for Sheldon, our HSOV Kennel Techs/Staff/Volunteers would love to introduce you to this awesome dog. Sheldon went home with a foster family on February 8, 2025 who plans to adopt him if all goes well. Update: Sheldon was officially adopted by his foster family on February 21, 2025. Unfortunately Sheldon was returned to HSOV on March 7, 2025 through no fault of his own since the family's landlord did not want Sheldon there because of his breed .. So very sad that Sheldon and other dogs are discriminated against in this way. Sheldon went home with another foster family on March 11, 2025 who plans to adopt him if all goes well. We are keeping our fingers crossed that this will be Sheldon's 'forever home'. Update: Sheldon was adopted on March 12, 2025.

Story
Sylveon is a beautiful 8-year old female Boxer who arrived at the HSOV after hours on November 1, 2024 after she was picked up in the Macksburg Ohio area by a Washington County Ohio Deputy Sheriff. Sylveon was wearing a collar but there was neither an id tag nor a dog license tag on her collar .. And she was not microchipped. This sweet older lady has a tan-and-white coat, a short docked tail, and a lovely Boxer face with hopeful trusting eyes, black/silver shading on her muzzle, and natural un-cropped ears. Sylveon has a gentle, easygoing personality. She wags her tiny tail a mile-a-minute the moment you make eye contact with her. Slyveon is not good with cats. Thanks to HSOV Board President/Volunteer Amber Dennison for accompanying Sylveon outdoors for her 'glamour photos' before she started walking several of the resident HSOV dogs. Sylveon was so popular that she actually ended up with two sets of 'glamour photos' (which speaks volumes for her sweet personality). HSOV Kennel Tech Lauryn Hamilton took Sylveon out later that afternoon after closing time for a bathroom break before going to her kennel for the night. The afternoon temperatures were a little chilly on November 2nd, so our kennel techs dressed Slyveon in a stylish lightweight jacket .. which she seemed to enjoy wearing. Sylveon weighs 50 lbs and walks well on a leash. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Sylveon was held for the mandatory three-day stray hold. Sadly, nobody called or came looking for this sweet senior lady. Sylveon went home with a foster family on January 9, 2025 but was returned on January 21, 2025 through no fault of her own. Sylveon was diagnosed with renal failure during the pre-surgery examination for her spay procedure. We are heartbroken for Sylveon and her foster family, but we are thankful that another foster mother offered to share her home with Sylveon on January 22nd where she will be given unconditional love in addition to appropriate medical/hospice care.
