Story
Cindy is a 5-year-old bundle of energy and affection who's on the lookout for a forever home that understands her unique personality. She originally came to us on May 23, 2023, was adopted in January 2024, but was returned in August 2024. Now, she's ready for a second chance with the right family. Cindy is a true cuddle bug who loves giving kisses and soaking up all the affection she can get! She's always up for a game or a romp around the yard, so she'll fit right in with an active family that enjoys staying on the go. Though Cindy is dog-selective, she can do well with the right canine companion, but a Meet & Greet with any potential dog siblings is a must. Cindy also isn't suited for homes with small animals, including cats. If you're ready for a loving, high-energy companion who's full of personality, Cindy can't wait to meet you and show you just how much love she has to give!

Story
*LONGEST RESIDENT* Sammi's story began on August 30, 2022. We rescued her from an overcrowded high-kill shelter in a neighboring county where she had been placed on their euthanasia list after being confiscated in an abuse case. She was severely malnourished, all of her little bones painfully visible. Her fur was thin with bald spots where it had fallen out. Her little body was covered in scabbed cuts and scars from abuse by awful humans. Sammi was about 2 years old at that time and it was evident that she'd had several litters of puppies in her young years. Our Humane Society veterinary team, shelter staff, and volunteers got to work as soon as Sammi arrived to heal her little body and soul and show her that humans could be kind, caring, and most importantly, trusted. After extensive care and rehab, Sammi was adopted from our shelter on Valentine's Day 2023. Sadly, her adopter did not have the time to work with her. In October 2023, Sammi was surrendered again. Although physically healthy, she has now developed separation anxiety, is fearful of strangers, and is reactive to other dogs. We can tell you from experience that once you have Sammi's trust, you have unconditional love. She will happily sit in your lap for chest and belly rubs until she falls asleep snuggled against you. She loves to play with toys, especially tennis balls. She loves to go on walks, car rides, and run and play in the yard. If you fill a kiddie pool with water she'll splash and play in it every day. Sammi will need to be the only pet in her new home with people who can spend time with her. She would be a good fit for someone who works from home, works part-time, or is retired. She needs an active person who can walk and play with her every day. If you can provide a loving home where Sammi is given the time and attention she needs to develop trust with her family, please come to our shelter to meet her and see if Sammi is the right fit for you. She will love you forever! For more information on Sammi and the other animals waiting to join their new families, please email adoptions@humanemanatee.org or call 941-747-8808 x 312.

Story
Hickory arrived at our HSMC shelter on November 8, 2023. We rescued him from an overcrowded shelter in the middle of the state where he had been for 6 months. We have no clue why he had been overlooked for so long as he was playful, walked great on a leash and loved people. We took him on a field trip to the Gamble Creek Farms fall festival where he happily played with children who adored him. He caught toys that the kids tossed in the air and rolled over on his back in their laps for snuggles and belly rubs. We took pictures of Hickory and the kids having a ball! All animals that enter our shelter receive a thorough health evaluation by our veterinary team. Unfortunately, this exam revealed that Hickory was heartworm positive. His treatment was completed and his 9 month heartworm retest will be due in December. After completion of treatment, we found that Hickory had become nervous and anxious at times. He was now reactive to most other dogs and selective of new people. He just needs new humans to give him a little more time to develop trust. Once you earn his trust, he is a very sweet and playful dog. He loves to take car rides for picnics. He will spread out on a soft blanket, legs behind him in frog position, while you brush his fur. He enjoys belly rubs and back massages. He loves to play with balls, especially blue ones that squeak. He loves to chase ice cubes in water buckets and kiddie pools. He will sit for treats and takes food from your hand so gently. Hickory is a great playful dog who will be a loving and faithful companion for a human that is willing to give him the time he needs to develop trust. He needs a human that is a strong leader so that he feels safe, calm and confident. He needs a home where he is the only pet, at least initially, and needs an active person who is able to walk him and play with him every day. In return, he will give you unconditional love. So, if you can provide a loving home where Hickory is given the time and attention he needs to develop trust with his family, please come to our shelter to meet him and see if you and Hickory are a good fit.
