He's a goofball - part overgrown puppy, part bestest boi evah! Reese loves going for walks (his manners are great), and he'd be an outstanding companion for a hiker or casual jogger. He's always up for fun, but he's also laid-back and easy-going. HISTORY Reese is a member of the Cocoapup litter - five sweet boys who were very young, sick babies when they were dumped on a country road near Prosser, in Eastern Washington, in September last year. It took a while in their loving foster home to get them healthy and build their confidence, but they've matured into delightful companions and we are heartbroken and puzzled that three of these pups (Reese, Rolo and Heath) are still waiting for their forever families to choose them! Their breed mix is a well-educated guess. It's pretty obvious that they're at least half Doberman, this was confirmed by a DNA test done by the person who adopted one of their brothers. The test also indicated that the other half was made up of Alaskan Malamute and Siberian Husky. They have short Dobie-style coats, and their temperament is also typical Dobie. All three are in foster homes in Kennewick. All three boys get on well (they often meet for playdates) and could be placed together - but they're not tightly bonded and would also do well being placed in different homes. SOCIALIZATION As long as Reese is with someone he trusts he's comfortable in pretty much any environment and quickly adapts to change. He tends to be a little reserved with strangers and takes a while to warm up to new people, and he's generally more comfortable with women. But while he's checking you out Reese will usually be polite. He has taken a dislike to a couple of men he's deemed a threat to his foster mom, and let them know in no uncertain terms that they weren't going to get past him - so he needs his human to be a calm, confident leader who is committed to training him, to keep him safe. Reese hasn't interacted much with children while in our care, but when he meets kids while out on a walk he's polite and friendly. We'd expect him to do well in a home with calm, kind, dog-savvy children aged about 10 or older. He shares his foster home with five other dogs and is generally relaxed and submissive. He loves to play with his big foster sister, and enjoys playdates with other dogs. We would expect him to be happiest sharing a home - or at least having regular playdates - with another young, friendly dog of compatible size. He would also be a good candidate for dog parks. Reese has encountered several cats in different situations, and is generally politely interested and friendly. We'd expect him to chase if a cat were to run, but he'd likely do well sharing his home with a confident, dog-savvy cat. Also living at his foster home are chickens and horses, and he is polite to all of them. However he has been known to chase the neighbor's chickens and ducks when out gallivanting with another naughty dog, so poultry interactions need to be managed and supervised. TEMPERAMENT AND BEHAVIOR With people he trusts, Reese is a lover. He likes to lean in for a full body massage or a face rub. However, he isn't needy; this is a dog who will happily kick back and snooze or keep busy with a chew toy while you do your thing. When you're ready to throw a ball or kong he'll happily chase - and he's learning to retrieve. He loves to chew, but usually chews his own stuff - bones, sticks and toys. He is VERY playful - and also very smart - which sometimes adds up to trouble. Reese is still enough of a puppy to enjoy excavating his yard, and although he's not generally destructive it's hard to resist an abandoned cardboard box or a deliciously rippy piece of fabric. These transgressions happen only occasionally, but he's still not ready to be left loose indoors unsupervised for long, and if you're in love with your smooth lawn and lush flowerbeds you might want to choose a different dog. He loves going for car rides, walks, and visits to interesting places like the pet store or Home Depot. If you're looking for a sidekick for your adventures, look no further! He's also athletic enough to be a good jogging or hiking companion. Reese is naturally alert and protective. He'll bark when people arrive on his property or approach his gate, and would probably instinctively get between you and anyone who threatened you. Generally when out and about he's polite and friendly to anyone he meets. TRAINING Reese walks well on a leash, although he may pull occasionally. His recall is fair. His caregivers are working on basic obedience commands. His house manners are good. He is reliably house-trained, is crate trained (and will choose to go into his crate for quiet time), doesn't steal or counter-surf, is rarely destructive (that behavior usually happens outside as part of a rambunctious game), and is generally calm and quiet. This boy can be stubborn - he does like to please himself - but he's starting to catch on to the notion that if he makes the human happy, he can earn a reward. He is very smart, treat-motivated and responds well to praise. He needs his person to be committed to giving him a solid grounding in basic obedience, because he's a big, strong boy - and we believe he'd be a quick study, and potentially a lot of fun for more advanced training if that's your fancy. HEALTH STATUS Based on their teeth and the fact that they could barely lap water, we estimated that the Cocoapups were maybe six weeks old when we took them in. We have assigned them July 23, 2023 as their birthday. Reese has been neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for internal and external parasites, and microchipped. He's received occasional vet care as needed for minor issues, like an ear infection. His full vet records will be provided to his adopter. He weighs around 75 lbs and appears to be in excellent health. But although the first week or so was difficult for him, he was able to work through the anxiety and adjust to the change. Heath quickly bonds very tightly with his special people. He needs caregivers who are gentle and patient as well as firm, consistent and able to be confident leaders. He tends to be reserved and slow to warm up to strangers, but he knows how to greet people politely when they visit his home, or meet him while out on a walk. He is uncomfortable around young children, but would probably do well in a home with calm, kind, dog-savvy children aged about 12 and over. He grew up in a home with a large pack of dogs of all sizes, and he is generally comfortable with other dogs. He especially enjoys playing with his brothers, although he is not closely bonded to them and will do fine if adopted separately. When in a new environment he may tend to be possessive of "his" humans and growly at any other dogs, but given time he settles down and is willing to share. On walks he can be somewhat leash-reactive toward other dogs who get too close, but he does very well playing off-leash at a dog park. In a previous foster home Heath lived with cats, and he treated them with respect. If a cat were to run he would probably chase, but we believe he would be safe sharing his home with a confident, dog-savvy cat. TEMPERAMENT AND BEHAVIOR Heath is fairly confident, provided he's with someone he trusts. He's not one to rush into a new situation, but will rather stop and analyze it before moving forward. This boy is a lover! He's not needy, but if you settle down on the couch, expect him to jump up beside you and rest his head on your lap - in other words, he's exactly what you're looking for as we head toward winter! Heath's ideal home has a fenced yard big enough to play in, and a friendly, playful canine companion of compatible size to help him work off his energy. He is not an especially high energy dog - he happily spends hours on end just kicking back somewhere comfortable and keeping his human company - but he's not a couch potato. This boy needs several daily walks or play sessions, and would make an excellent hiking or jogging companion. That said, he adapted well to apartment life. Given plenty of exercise and stimulation, and provided the complex is designed to minimize crowding, he'll be a good fit for an active person who works mostly from home. Heath isn't greatly interested in balls, but he enjoys having a good chew and he LOVES figuring out how to get a treat out of a puzzle toy. He loves car rides - he knows they usually end in something fun, and he will also wait quietly if left in the car for a short while. Heath is naturally protective, and will bark when strangers approach the property. He is generally more comfortable with women, but most men have to be approved by his foster mom and pay an entry fee of one treat before they come through the gate. TRAINING Heath's house manners are good. He is reliably potty trained and crate trained, and he doesn't steal food or counter-surf. When left alone in his crate he may bark for a little while but quickly settles down with something to chew. He also thinks YouTube dog videos are a great way to pass the time! His adopters put him through a course with an online trainer and he learned a lot. Commands he knows include "touch", "look at me", "sit" and "down", and he's working on "stay" and "leave it". This is a smart boy who enjoys pleasing his people, will eagerly work for treats, and loves learning new skills. His recall needs work - he might keep you waiting if he's busy with something interesting - but he's quick to come running if he sees you're getting ready to leave the place you're visiting. He knows how to walk well on a leash, but he does tend to pull and needs frequent corrections. When on leash if he sees humans approaching he's inclined to freeze and stare, and he can be reactive (lunging and barking) when he sees other dogs. We are working with him on these behaviors and he's making progress. Rolo is a clown, with a supersized personality and a mischievous sense of humor. But while he does love to have fun, he's a good boy - respectful of other dogs, polite toward people, and pretty much past the destructive puppy stage. We're working on that, but he needs a patient caregiver who will continue to expose him to new places and people while building his confidence. When Rolo meets new people he will cautiously approach for a get-to-know-you sniff of the hand (it helps if you're holding a treat!) He would like to be friends, although he'll warm up faster to a woman than to a man. Once he trusts you he'll follow you around, intensely interested in whatever you're doing. He hasn't had much exposure to young children while in our care, and we believe he'd be happiest in an adult-only home, or with gentle, dog-savvy children aged about 12 and over. He enjoys hanging out and keeping his person company, but he's also very content just to take some alone time outside. Rolo is very mellow, but playful, with all the energy required for a good game of tag. Given time to build a trusting relationship with you, he'd make a great hiking or jogging companion. He also loves car rides and is interested in following his nose through new places, so as his confidence grows he's developing into an excellent sidekick for adventures. Meet Izzie, a two year old Doberman Pinscher/Border Collie mix. Izzie is a friendly girl who was brought in with Charlotte, another dog, they get along well together but are in separate kennels and can go to different homes. Both came in with missing/thinning fur that we suspect is more environmental than anything and now that they are away from that environment they should be doing better. Izzie was also missing skin on her paw pads making her feet pretty tender, this should heal with time. Izzie is 44 pounds of sweetness. She is a bit on the shy side but enjoys attention. She just needs some TLC to come out of her shell. Izzie would do best in a home with no cats.
