Story
Greta is a female chocolate and tan Doberman puppy. She is 10 weeks old (DOB 12/17/24) and she weighs about 14.6 pounds. Greta has had three sets of puppy vaccines and deworming. She is ready for adoption. Greta is a beautiful baby with the prettiest hazel eyes and a sweet disposition. She has a birth defect that has caused her to have restricted vision and a slight tilt of her head to the left. She sees well enough to play with other dogs and avoid bumping into stationary objects. (See video.) Greta came to rescue from the person that purchased the momma dog but she still had one 5-week-old “injured” puppy in tow. We suspected the baby was not injured and our vet confirmed her condition existed at birth. Her exam concluded that she doesn’t see out of her left eye (doesn’t respond to light) which may be somewhat responsible for the head tilt to put the right eye in a better position to see. Our observations lead us to say she sees only a few feet ahead. The doctor felt that with her young age she will likely improve some and develop hearing to help compensate for poor vision. We’ve already seen some signs of that. She also felt that Greta needs another large dog as a companion and model for her to follow. Overall, her impairment will require some adjustments but Greta has all the potential to make a wonderful pet. Greta is adorably dog and people friendly, with no discernment for other dogs warning her off. Everyone is her size or smaller in her foster home, so not everyone wants to play with her but she assumes they do. In normal puppy fashion she has clumsy feet and sharp teeth and has not learned not to be underfoot. She is big to us who are used to weenie dog sized creatures, so it’s strange to watch her trying to learn to go up stairs, which she hasn’t figured out just yet, and remember despite her size she is just a baby. Greta has the basics of potty training with accidents only when we can’t supply adequate breaks outside. She has been very cooperative with crate training and will play with toys in her crate. We are looking for a person or family with a friendly adult larger breed dog already in the home, with a fenced yard, and the dedication to help sweet Greta reach her full potential as a family pet. Experience with Dobermans or vision impaired dogs is a plus. We have Greta scheduled for spay on May 8, at our expense, on doctor’s advice. We need the adopter to bring Greta to Texarkana AR for this spay appointment (or work with us on arrangements to meet etc). In the meantime the adopter will complete her fourth puppy vaccines and rabies vaccine around March 27. Adoption fee is $300.
