Story
Say hello to your new, adorable lap dog! Meet Cherry, a 6.5-year old, 17-pound Dachshund mix who is a lazy, affectionate meatball! Cherry is a quick learner and is very food motivated! He’s doing great on his pee pad skills, and likes to take one short walk each day. He is able to be crated, but prefers to chill on your lap, a sofa, or especially snuggle with you in bed at night! He also travels well in a bag or cruises in a car. The important thing to consider is that Cherry was rescued from a hoarding case - so he is looking for that very patient, committed human who is able to consider this a marathon, not a sprint as he learns to gain your trust and reveal just how wonderfully adorable of a companion he truly is! If you’re willing to put in the time up front, you will have a low-maintenance, loveable lap dog for life. Get excited for those cuddles! Cherry would do best in a calm, quiet household, especially as he adjusts to his new surroundings, with no more than one small, easy-going dog in the household. Cherry is ready to share the simple pleasures of life with you. A perfect companion dog, there’s no doubt he’ll be the Cherry on your ice cream sundae! Story
JUNIOR - 6 months, 12lbs, Dachshund Mix, NeuteredExpected full grown size about 20lbs  Level of dog ownership experience needed:INTERMEDIATE: As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) Relevant puppy care experience is a huge plus, but bare minimum the adopter must have TONS of time and patience. Raising a puppy can be a lot of fun, but it’s also  tremendous work. Puppies’ personalities and exercise/stimulation requirements change dramatically between now and when they’re a year old as their bodies and brains develop, so an active lifestyle and the ability to adapt to a pup’s evolving needs are a must. We strongly urge professional dog training with a rewards based trainer from the get go. Adults only or kids ages 8 and up – all puppies go through a mouthy, rambunctious phase and often accidentally hurt children when playing. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN BREED RESEARCH to make sure you have a better understanding of the kind of temperament and exercise requirements this dog may have as an adult. Energy levelMEDIUM: Very young puppies sleep and nap a lot, but their energy level skyrockets when they become teens (4 months to around a year). As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day at a minimum. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)  Potty trained?Working on this skill. Puppies under 12 weeks old are often on track with their wee pad skills, but they’re too young to walk outside in public NYC areas yet because they haven’t finished their puppy vaccine series. Puppies older than 12 weeks are usually learning to do their business outside. Potty training takes a lot of patience, consistency, and clean up.  Crate trained?Nope. None of our new puppies have been formally trained, but many of our foster parents/adopters choose to crate train. It can be a great way to keep puppies safe and teach them independence. Social with dogs?Yes. Some puppies are shy, others are bold, but all have the potential to be taught healthy socializing skills. It’s a huge part of raising a puppy and must be done carefully. How they interact with other dogs depends largely on how their humans help them learn to.  Social with children?  (ALWAYS requires adult supervision)Yes… but most puppies are not a great match for a home with kids under age 8 because they go through intense mouthy play and rambunctious phases and often accidentally hurt young kids while playing. Children must always be monitored and taught to interact with dogs of any age respectfully.   Social with cats?Yes. Almost all puppies have the potential to be friends with a cat. It’s on the adopter to know their cat’s temperament and preferences and to teach their puppy respectful manners.  Mouthy play: High! All puppies go through phases where they chew your stuff and grab your hands, arms, feet… puppies naturally explore the world, play, and test boundaries with their mouths. (It also happens when they’re teething.) Their teeth are super sharp though, so it can be a very painful phase for humans and other animals in the home. Proper training, outlets, and socialization are key. Leash manners:None. :) Will need to learn this skill.   Separation anxiety:MEDIUM: Most puppies have some level of separation anxiety as they learn to self soothe. Often they cry the first 10+ minutes when they are left home alone or in a crate. Consistent training and alone time is crucial. Medical status:Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP and Bordetella vaccines (for dogs under 4 months old, adopters will need to finish the DHPP vaccine series and administer the Rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age), spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer uponHow this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee or St. Thomas. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.  PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!  This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes. Story
Meet Eunice, a sweet and easygoing 9-year-old, 21-pound dachshund mix from Alabama. This gentle girl is the perfect cuddle buddy, always ready to curl up next to you and enjoy some quiet time. Eunice is a unique mix—she has the long body of a dachshund but the vocal repertoire of a hound. Eunice isn't an excessive barker, but she does have a charming little "opera" she sings when she’s feeling extra happy, almost like she's serenading you! When she’s settled into a cozy spot, she’ll let out a dramatic little whine if you try to move her—just her way of telling you she’s perfectly content where she is. She’s great on a leash and enjoys her daily walks, although she does have some mild arthritis, so she’s a bit slower on stairs (she’s fine going up but takes her time going down). Despite this, she’s still active and loves to get outside for some fresh air. This sweet girl is wonderful with other animals. She’s currently living with small foster dog and cat siblings and tends to ignore them, so she’d likely do well with dogs of her size or smaller. She would do great in a home with children as long as they respect her space and are gentle with her. Eunice’s laid-back, loving nature makes her an easy companion in any home. She’s the type of dog who will happily relax by your side, content with the simple pleasures of life. If you're looking for a gentle, affectionate friend who is easygoing and sweet as can be, Eunice may be the perfect fit for you! Vaccinated for DHPP, rabies, lepto, and bordetella. Neutered, heartworm negative, and microchipped. Current on flea, tick and heartworm prevention. To apply for Eunice, visit our website (www.waggytailrescue.org) for an adoption application. It is important to fill out an application as soon as possible for consideration, and we require a complete application for you to meet an animal. Story
Meet Sam Elliot!Sam Elliot is a playful, energetic, and snuggly 1-year-old, 11-pound male Dachshund mix from Texas, now living in Brooklyn and ready to find his forever family! Sam Elliot is full of life and loves to be the center of attention—whether he's playing with toys, following his foster mom around, or having a blast with his foster brother. He’s a loving little shadow who enjoys both active play and cozy downtime, making him the perfect balance of energetic and affectionate. He’s pee pad trained and currently working on his housetraining and crate training, so his new family will need to continue his progress. Sam Elliot is still refining his leash skills and gets easily distracted by the sights and sounds of the city, especially when he sees other dogs! His forever family will need to help him work through these distractions to help him gain confidence on walks. Sam Elliot has some separation anxiety and doesn’t love being left alone in his crate during the workday, but he thrives with lots of love, attention, and snuggles from his people. He’s a sweet boy who would do well in a home with or without children, and he could be an only dog or enjoy the company of another dog. It’s unknown how he’ll react to other animals in the household, so a slow introduction would be ideal. Sam Elliot would be a perfect match for an active family who’s ready for his high-energy playtime and cuddly moments. He’s ready to continue his journey of learning and growth with a family who will support him as he adjusts to his new life. Could that be you? Vaccinated for rabies, DHPP, and bordetella. Neutered, heartworm negative, and microchipped. Current on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. To apply for Sam, visit our website (www.waggytailrescue.org) for an adoption application.
