Sam found himself homeless after his owner went to a nursing home. He is great with other dogs and good with people. We do not know what he thinks of cats. Sam is just an overall very chill boy. He does the cutest little dance on his short back legs when he gets excited! Sam is about 5 years old and 35 pounds. Please help Sam find the loving home he deserves. ***You must provide a vet reference for a current or past pet you have/had.*** We do NOT ship our animals. All adoptive families must travel to us to meet their adoptive dog/cat. Applicants must live within a 2 hour radius from Sparta/Andover (07871/07821). Please understand that we are an animal shelter and thus unable to say whether the dogs are housebroken as they are not in homes. Story
Piper just turned a year old. This sweet and super friendly girl was an owner surrender. Her Dad was a full bred Dauschund and Mom was a Lab/Heeler/Cattle Dog mix of some sort. Her longer body, short legs and brindle coat take after Dad and her face/ears after her Mom. She is a cute looking pup! Piper lived with a 6 year old child and likes to play with other dogs but she does not like to share her food so it is best to feed her by herself. We do not know what she thinks of cats. Piper walks well on a leash but prefers a harness over a collar. At a year old, she still has alot of puppy energy/play in her. Piper weighs about 20 pounds. Please help Piper find the loving home she deserves. ***You must provide a vet reference for a current or past pet you have/had.*** We do NOT ship our animals. Story
Franklin is awesome. He turned 9 years old in January but he's still very youthful and healthy. He is great with everyone, fully housebroken, crate trained, good on leash, good off leash. He likes to swim and open presents. Minimal barking (only when someone knocks on the door). He's pretty much the perfect dog. It kills me to have to find him a new home, but we had a baby a little over a year ago and not only do we have no time for Franklin, he's trying to get attention by destroying the baby's books and toys every chance he gets. So he's been mostly locked in a crate all day, which I don't want to keep doing to him. He's best friends with Cabbage (cat pictured, also listed on adoptapet) so we will prioritize someone who can take them both. Thank you

Story
Meet Rebel, the most terrified of the group of 10 little ones we took in from a home that ended up with too many dogs due to lack of spay/neuter. So of course she’s our favorite 😍. She peed all over the aco that removed her from the home and peed and pooped all over us the day we got her. We do love a good feral project dog. You can see her progress over the past 2 weeks as you swipe through her pics, from totally shut down and feral, avoiding eye contact, trying to make herself invisible, and panicking and running from us, to actually starting to come up and greet us happily and seek out petting! She’s not even 3 years old, still a baby and her inner puppy energy comes out more and more each day. The has the perfect short long body of a standard wirehaired doxie but with an almost human-like face stuck onto her. She was a chunky 21lbs and has lost a couple already but should be more like 17 probably. She had never been to a vet or left the only home she ever knew before, and will panic and likely regress at first moving to another home but we can see what a sweet special girl she has the potential to be with the right person. She loves and takes comfort from other dogs and will need a calmer adult home, preferably just one or 2 people, and at least one other dog friend she can learn from and follow. She’s never been walked on a leash or experienced so many normal dog things, but she’s been learning to follow the other dogs out into a fenced yard to go to the bathroom and also uses wee wee pads. She has a shorter wiry coat than most of the others from her group and is not a non-shedding breed that requires grooming more than a good brushing every now and then- gotta love that scruffy wash and wear coat! Email njwoof@cs.com if you think your home might be a good fit for our special shy girl Rebel. She’s been spayed, updated on shots, and is fostered in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
Have you met Fred? His owner is dead. 😔 He was never well-socialized from what his owner’s relatives said. But was devoted to his master and slept in his bed. 🛏️ He was scared and defensive and at first meeting strangers filled him with dread. 😱 But he is very food motivated and warms up as soon as he’s fed. 🍱 🍦 🍗 Fred has long lumpy body that looks like a loaf of bread, 🍞 Amazing big ears and a comically disproportionately tiny head. He had not been to a vet in a decade and needed a dental and some meds, 💊 He is dangerously overweight from being overfed. But at least he was already neutered and never bred. He’s an 11 year old chiweenie- that’s doxie/chi mix and not a purebred. We were warned he might be more of a jerky little butthead, But he’s actually just a scared wimpy guy, and we are happy we were misled. He’s currently peacefully living with other small calm dogs, there’s been no bloodshed. We don’t normally write poetry, but a surprising number of things rhyme with Fred 🤷‍♀️ So we are hopeful our very bad literary work will help his story stick in your head. Email njwoof@cs.com to come to Northern NJ and meet our cute little redhead! Story
Meet Kayli 💜 the GIANT doxie mix 🌭. And we mean GIANT! This very special SWEET girl is the biggest dog we have had in a while, weighing in at a whopping 70lbs! 😱 But we plan on shrinking her… she’s severely unhealthily overweight and should probably be more like 45lbs 😔 😳 With her short twisty doxie legs, the extra weight is especially dangerous to her back and she will probably end up crippled and/or dying prematurely if her weight loss plan isn’t taken seriously. She’s said to be 5 years old, but we are thinking more like 7ish. But she could just be prematurely grey. Her weight makes her move and act like a geriatric couch potato 🛋️ 🥔, she struggles on stairs and can’t walk very far, but we hope she will age in reverse as she loses weight on her diet. She belonged to an elderly man who was moving and could no longer care for her, and didn’t do much besides lay on the couch napping and snacking. Kayli is a gentle lovely soul, scared and confused but sweet and we haven’t seen a mean bone in her body. Though we can’t really see any bones. She’s lived with a cat, avoids conflict with other dogs. All who meet her fall in love with her big brown eyes and calm demeanor and she deserves a lot healthy life as a cherished companion. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Kayli in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ.
