My story is both heart-warming and heartbreaking, but I'm glad I found my way back to the rescue organization that can help me find the forever home I deserve. I can be a gentle and loyal companion who simply craves the love and attention that every dog deserves. Despite the neglect I experienced in my previous home,I have adjusted well since being returned to the rescue. My shyness and caution around men is understandable, but with the right patience and care, I'm confident I will blossom into a wonderful family member. Here are a few key points about you that stand out: I am a loyal and humble companion who appreciates the simple things in life, like gentle pats and a calm voice. I may be a bit shy at first, but will warm up to people and become the heart of the home. I would do best in a quiet, loving environment, and would make a great match for older children or a veteran looking for a furry friend. Despite the neglect in my past, I have adjusted well since being returned to the rescue.  I truly believe that with the right forever family who is willing to give me the time, patience, and love I deserve, I will flourish. Sweeten your life with your very own Almond Joy! My momma was a collie mix and I never saw my daddy - so no idea what he was, but I'm a delight. There's no sugarcoating it- I am adorable and I know it!! Sometimes you feel like a nut? If today is that day - take me home! If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! All of our pets are neutered or spayed, have vaccinations appropriate for their age, treated with flea/tick/heartworm prevention, dewormed and dogs are also microchipped. #adoptdontshop ##2259550##

Story
Lila is deaf, and that is her special need. Other than that, she is so happy and loving. Lila LOVES people so very much and will walk into you and curl right up, getting love and snuggles. She has been well socialized with other dogs and the cat that lives at the foster home. She did not initially like the cat, but now she snuggles right up with him and enjoys having him around. She loves playing with friendly dogs and having her toys around. Lila is a tenderhearted girl who is learning her way around the best way to take her cues. She is spayed and micro-chipped, and is a wonderful companion for someone who is around often and wants to help Lila continue to evolve. She walks well on a leash, never goes too far, and loves attention. Lila enjoys playing with a Kong food dispenser rolling around the kitchen floor (and we enjoy watching her play with that as well!). She has learned what it is to play and what dog toys are now, and that has been the best evolution to watch! She is going to need some more training specific for deaf dogs, but she is such a calm and tender dog that the training would simply be for her confidence. We have been working on everything, and she truly has started to take to direction well. She has started to look at our faces, and is doing very well with sit and down. She would thrive with someone who is willing to do training specific to deaf dogs. Lila did not love going in the car, but now goes every day happily and enjoys looking out of the window. She can be a little picky about food, but loves chicken and puppy food, and always enjoys treats. Lila is exceptional, and we know there is her person out there knowing that she is such an outstanding girl who deserves all of the love that a person has to offer. She has such a tender and gentle disposition, you will fall in love immediately.
