Tino is a 1.5-year-old Chihuahua/Dachshund mix with a sleek black-and-brown coat and a big personality packed into a small body. His name was inspired by a famous soccer player, perfect for a little guy who loves to run, play, and win hearts wherever he goes.
Tino came to the rescue after spending time in a puppy mill. While we do not know exactly what he experienced, it is clear he did not have the easiest start. Because of this he can be a little nervous around sudden movements or stern voices. With patience, kindness, and consistency, Tino continues to grow more confident and shows his sweet and loving personality more every day.
Tino would do well in almost any home setting, whether it is an apartment, townhouse, or detached home. He is a happy and affectionate dog who enjoys playing and chasing his people but he is just as content curling up for a nap… preferably right beside you or on you. Tino is a true cuddle bug and is happiest when he is close to his humans. He will greet you with a wagging tail, a wiggly body, and by climbing into your lap for snuggles and kisses. You can expect him to follow you from room to room, waiting outside the bathroom or watching you relax. He may whine briefly when he cannot see you, but he settles quickly and is not a major bother. Tino is also very quiet and rarely ever barks. One of our favourite things about Tino is his ability to fall asleep in any position, whether that is half on your lap and half on the floor, in an awkward or uncomfortable position, or in tight spaces, and still have the best sleep of his life.
Tino enjoys his daily walks, usually between one hour and an hour and a half. He loves to sniff, explore, and meet new people. He walks well on a leash overall, though he may pull a bit when he has extra energy, especially after being in his crate. He is still learning to calmly pass other dogs. He does not bark at them but may stare or pull with curiosity.
Tino offers a great balance of being playful and calm. He enjoys playtime but he is very relaxed when it is time to wind down. Bath time is not his favourite, especially with running water or hoses, which can make him nervous. He does best with gentle, poured, and lukewarm water in a calm environment. He is house-trained and understands to go outside, though he may occasionally have small accidents if he is very excited or needs to go urgently. Tino can be sensitive to stern voices, especially from men, and may have a submissive urination response when scared. You may notice him trying to make himself small or tucking his tail. With patience and reassurance, this continues to improve as he feels safer and more comfortable. Any men in his home will need to be patient, calm and quieter with him and let him build trust with them,.
Tino is very cooperative when being cleaned after walks and does well with having his paws wiped. Tino does very well in his crate. He is able to stay in there for a few minutes to a several hours if needed. Tino also sleeps in his crate in a different room from his fosters at night with no problems. He is easily guided into the crate with treats and does best when the crate is covered. Sometimes there is whining, but he settles very quickly. Tino also enjoys car rides and is happy to relax in the back seat or sit beside you.
Tino does well with other dogs when introduced properly, though his reaction to cats is unknown. He would do best in a home with older, respectful children, over the age of 10yrs, who understand how to interact gently with animals. He already knows some basic commands such as sit and wait. He is highly motivated by his favourite beef liver treats and learns quickly.
Tino does well at the vet, though he appreciates gentle handling during exams and shots. He has recently been neutered, is up to date on vaccinations, and is otherwise medically up to date. He is currently experiencing some hair loss along the outer edges of his ears, which the vet believes is ear margin dermatosis. This is being treated with an antibacterial and antifungal steroidal cream (Viaderm), along with omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in his food. This is an affliction that often affects Dachshunds.
Tino is a quiet, affectionate, and playful companion, happiest when curled up beside his person or following them from room to room. After time in a puppy mill, he can be sensitive to sudden movements and stern voices, so he needs a patient, gentle home that will help him continue to build confidence and feel safe. He would thrive in a calm environment with consistent routines, ideally with older, respectful children or ideally and adult only home, and adopters who enjoy both long, good paced walks and lots of cuddle time. If you are looking for a loyal, loving shadow who will shower you with kisses and be your constant companion, Tino is your perfect match.
