Story
Rufus is a sweet, quirky, cuddly dog — but he needs to be an “only-dog.” He lived with my mom and sister, who both unfortunately died recently. Rufus will be 10 years old in March 2025, but he is quite energetic and weighs 14 pounds. He has a highly treatable heart condition. He is crate-trained but is not 100% housebroken, so frequent walks with a couple of pee pads placed around the house are advisable.. He is loving and comical. He can shake on command. He loves taking walks and getting treats. He’s a climber, so all food must be placed well out of his reach. It breaks my heart to part with him, but I know that he will make a happy forever home with another family as an only-dog. 🥹

Story
Good with:Most dogs Not tested with: Cats, kids House trained:Mostly with an occasional accident Energy level:Low Noise level:Barks on leash Hi, Im Pixi! Im a smart and loving dog who loves to play with toys, sit on laps, and go for walks. Im pretty easygoing and settle down easily, so Im a great companion to have around. I do have a little dog spunk, though, and will bark when new visitors arrive or when I see other people and dogs on walks, but otherwise, Im quiet. My favorite thing about me? Well, I have a big heart and love my caretakers a whole lot, and Im always ready to show it! Im affectionate, playful, and friendly, and while my energy level is low, I do enjoy a good zoomie session now and then. I also like to ride in the car, take long and short walks, and just have fun. I'm working on my interactions with strangers and new people. I can be a little fearful until I know they are my friends. Im still learning how to greet people properly, and Id benefit from an owner who can help me with this and be aware of my comfort level. Ive had some past stress when new people have tried to touch me, but with the right guidance, I know I can get better at it. I'm mostly housetrained and making strides since arriving in D.C.! Im crate trained and go in nicely when my foster family leaves for the day. I'm working on my leash training and will sometimes bark, but Ill need an experienced owner to help me with these behaviors. I get along with other dogs, but I prefer ones who understand my boundaries. I think Id do best in a home with adults who know how to read my cues and make me feel comfortable. My routine is pretty chill: I sleep in my fosters bed at night, go outside in the morning, play with my toys, and enjoy a good walk. I also follow my foster mom around the house, which I think is pretty sweet. Id be a great fit for someone who works from home or is around a lot. Im smart and aim to please, so Im very trainable. I think Ill do best with an owner who has experience with dogs and can help me continue to grow in a loving, patient home. If you're looking for a loving companion wholl show you lots of affection, Im your girl! My foster guardian says: "My favorite thing about Pixie is her big heart and how much she loves her caretakers." Likes: Riding in the car, walks, zoomies My ideal home:I would do great in a variety of types of homes (houses, apartments, etc), but I would do best with an experienced owner to help me navigate new people. Pixie tested positive for heartworm and will need to undergo treatment once they arrive in the DMV, either while in foster or once they are with their adopter. RDR will cover the cost of the heartworm treatment through our vet partner. If the adopter would prefer to complete treatment at their vet, RDR will reimburse up to the treatment cost through our vet partner. During treatment, they need restricted exercise to short leashed walks only, and they need a fairly quiet home where they arent going to be overstimulated too much. Once the treatment is complete and they get the all clear from the vet, they will be able to live a totally normal/unrestricted life like any other dog. Dogs should be retested 9-12 months after treatment is completed and every year afterwards as part of their annual exam. Story
Meet Parker!  This precious little guy is 4 years old and about 12 lbs.  Evidently Parker did not have a very good life prior to joining Critter Cavalry.  We think he was bullied by another dog.  He is a 'sit on the sidelines and watch' kinda guy who doesn't really want to play with anyone.  He doesn't mind the other dogs and definitely is not mean.  He would just rather be with people.  Parker is super sweet and loves people.  He just wants to be where his foster mom is.  Parker would be a wonderful companion for someone that just wants one dog and who would like a dog they can take places.  He would love that and would love to be friends with all your friends.  He is just precious and very friendly.  He gentlY smells you to make sure you are OK and then he is good.  He was smiling during his photo shoot and seemed to enjoy all the attention.  If you are looking for a loyal companion then you have found him in Parker.  Parker is doggie door trained, neutered, current on all shots, heartworm negative and microchipped.  To be considered for Parker's forever family and to request an application please contact Vivienne at viviennejames@comcast.net.  APPROVED APPLICATION AND ADOOPTION FEE REQUIRED.  (Parker is currently in Tennessee and can be transported north upon adoption.)November 5, 2024, 1:27 pm

Story
Meet Curious Puppy Coco.  This beautiful brindle boy is only 17 weeks old and 7 lbs.  Just look at that face.  It definitely tells you that this curious little guy will be in the middle of everything.  This little boy is all legs.  You just want to smile when you look at him.  He is at that awkward stage in life with legs and feet going every where.  Coco is a very sweet boy.  He is super friendly and does not meet a stranger.  He happily goes up to everyone to be petted.  Coco loves other dogs and has a big time playing with his foster brothers.  He is a bit of a pest to the older dogs though as he always wants to play.  Coco would love to have another young brother or sister to play with.  He definitely needs a companion to keep him busy.  When Coco does settle down he is a great little cuddle boy and will curl up in your lap or beside you to go to sleep.  This little guy is doggie door and crate trained.  He walks OK on a leash but does need some additional training.  He is very smart though and catches on quickly.  He will be an excellent addition to the right family.  Coco is neutered, current on all shots and microchipped.  To be considered for his forever family and to request an application please contact Vivienne at viviennejames@comcast.net.  APPROVED APPLICATION AND ADOPTION FEE REQUIRED.  (Coco is currently in Tennessee and can be transported north upon adoption.)November 18, 2024, 11:35 am
