Im a smart and loving dog who loves to play with toys, sit on laps, and go for walks. Im pretty easygoing and settle down easily, so Im a great companion to have around. I do have a little dog spunk, though, and will bark when new visitors arrive or when I see other people and dogs on walks, but otherwise, Im quiet. My favorite thing about me? Well, I have a big heart and love my caretakers a whole lot, and Im always ready to show it! Im affectionate, playful, and friendly, and while my energy level is low, I do enjoy a good zoomie session now and then. I also like to ride in the car, take long and short walks, and just have fun. I'm working on my interactions with strangers and new people. I can be a little fearful until I know they are my friends. Im still learning how to greet people properly, and Id benefit from an owner who can help me with this and be aware of my comfort level. Ive had some past stress when new people have tried to touch me, but with the right guidance, I know I can get better at it. I'm mostly housetrained and making strides since arriving in D.C.! Im crate trained and go in nicely when my foster family leaves for the day. I'm working on my leash training and will sometimes bark, but Ill need an experienced owner to help me with these behaviors. I get along with other dogs, but I prefer ones who understand my boundaries. I think Id do best in a home with adults who know how to read my cues and make me feel comfortable. My routine is pretty chill: I sleep in my fosters bed at night, go outside in the morning, play with my toys, and enjoy a good walk. I also follow my foster mom around the house, which I think is pretty sweet. Id be a great fit for someone who works from home or is around a lot. Im smart and aim to please, so Im very trainable. I think Ill do best with an owner who has experience with dogs and can help me continue to grow in a loving, patient home. If you're looking for a loving companion wholl show you lots of affection, Im your girl! My foster guardian says: "My favorite thing about Pixie is her big heart and how much she loves her caretakers." Likes: Riding in the car, walks, zoomies My ideal home:I would do great in a variety of types of homes (houses, apartments, etc), but I would do best with an experienced owner to help me navigate new people. Pixie tested positive for heartworm and will need to undergo treatment once they arrive in the DMV, either while in foster or once they are with their adopter. RDR will cover the cost of the heartworm treatment through our vet partner. If the adopter would prefer to complete treatment at their vet, RDR will reimburse up to the treatment cost through our vet partner. During treatment, they need restricted exercise to short leashed walks only, and they need a fairly quiet home where they arent going to be overstimulated too much. Once the treatment is complete and they get the all clear from the vet, they will be able to live a totally normal/unrestricted life like any other dog. Dogs should be retested 9-12 months after treatment is completed and every year afterwards as part of their annual exam.
