Story
Some dogs are born into loving homes and then are adored for the rest of their lives. Others are not. And this happened to SPIN’s beautiful Salem.
Salem wasn’t perfect. Goodness knows he wasn’t perfect. He pulled on leash and chased the cats and he was bouncy and playful and a little mouthy and he growled at his owner when they tried to punish him. For four years this was his life. Four years of being a disappointment because he was, you know, a standard poodle. Many people desire a perfect dog, or perhaps a warm, stuffed animal—cuddly, soft, quiet, perfect. They often believe this is how dogs naturally are, not considering their energy, intelligence, playfulness, and fears. When these traits emerge, people blame the dog, and resentment settles in.
We loved him right away. Everyone who met him liked him immediately! What a smart, cuddly pup! Of course, we are all poodle people and all we could say to him was, "Welcome to SPIN, buddy!" To help him overcome his general level of anxiety that was built up over the 4 years he was in a stressful home, SPIN put him on Fluoxetine. And man, has this helped. You will see below in the description from his foster that he is still a little jumpy around loud noised and new things – he still doesn’t love having his ears and neck touched or pulled. I think we can understand why. Ah, Salem, we will find you a home where you can feel safe, warm and loved.
