You must live within 350 miles from Maryville, IL & able to drive for a meet and greet. Licorice is one of our longer foster residents, we owed it to him to give him plenty of time to decompress. We have taken a significant amount of time letting him acclimate to understanding being a pet & living in a home. He spent his younger days being a stud for a breeder, but now every day is leisure & playing with friends. His foster mom has reported a bit on his personality. He loves having furry friends of similar size in the home. We will require him to have canine friends, as he really looks to them for training & social cues. A secure physical fence will be required. Leash & harness training is not on the agenda. He doesn’t need a big yard; he just needs ample space to get some sunrays & do his potty business. His ideal home would be low-key and quiet. Licorice is going to be a hanging-out pal, not an activities partner. So, an active family would not be a good match. He is still quite fearful of hands but will let you pick him up to hold him. He is working on his potty-training routine; his foster mom says that the best plan right now is to continue letting him wear a belly band in the house. That alleviates quite a bit of stress for the humans & for Licorice. He has settled into the routine of his foster home quickly. He likes to be praised & responds well to words of affirmation. Anytime there is a change in their routine, dogs need a moment to adjust. Licorice is no different, but being the smart little dog he is, we think he will catch on quickly. Please let us know if you think your family is just the home he needs!

Lizzie / Cavalier King Charles Spaniel DOB 04/06/17 13lbs Spayed / Microchipped UTD on vaccinations Heartworm / Flea Preventative Heart Murmur/ DCM Please read the bio in its ENTIRETY. If you meet the requirements, please send an email to gateway4paws@gmail.com for additional information. Applications can be found here on our website. Since we are 100% foster-based rescue, only approved applications will be reviewed and/or contacted. We do not allow shipping & do not transport. You must live within 350 miles from Maryville, IL & able to drive there for a meet & greet. Mileage requirements may be lifted for Cavalier or DCM experienced homes. Lizzie came from a past life of breeding. Thankfully, she is a love bug and is not timid like most are. At Lizzie's vet intake appointment, the vet heard a heart murmur. Because of this, we got her seen with the cardiology team at U of I. She was diagnosed with Nutritional Secondary Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). DCM is not common for the cavalier breed. Her valves look good & there is trivial evidence of tricuspid regurgitation. The concern is with some enlargement, we have started her on a high-quality diet that could slow/reverse this condition. Lizzie will need to be seen by a licensed cardiologist in November for a recheck echocardiogram and follow the cardologist recommendation going forward for rechecks. She has also started Pimobendan which she may or may not need to remain on this medication long term. Your local vet is not the same as a cardiologist and they cannot perform these tests. If you don't already have a cardiologist, do the research to see where the closest one is to you and ensure you can make the drive should they be far away. You will be required to provide us the name of the cardiologist you would use when you apply. When Lizzy came into rescue, she needed a dental. She only had 13 teeth that needed to be cleaned/ but unfortunately, they were bad and all had to be pulled. Good news, Lizzy is in no more mouth pain and you will not need to pay for any more dentals. Lizzie is okay with a leash. She does better at her potty duties if she has a secure area to go in. For this reason, we would discuss a small designated physically secure area, as Lizzie isn't really fond of playing outside. She doesn't need a fenced yard, but she does need some security. Remember how little she is, and NEVER should she be left alone outside. Lizzie is a stage 5 clinger, she will glue herself to you, or any human, who will pick her up. Her number one goal all day long is to be touching a human. Being held by a human, laying next to a human, sitting with a human, staring at a human.....lol. You get the idea. Lizzie is an excellent car rider. She is just happy to be part of the festivities. Lizzie is just so thankful to have a chance at her own family. She is an absolute gem that doesn't get into any trouble, loves everyone she meets, and just wants love! Please let us know if you have the perfect home to offer Lizzie by sending us an email. Carmina came from a past life of breeding. Thankfully, she is a love bug and is not timid like most are. Fortunately, that life was very short lived & Carmina can now find a family of her very own where she will be treated as a valued member of the family. Carmina has not had an opportunity to work on leash training. With all the big changes in her life, we have chosen to not impost that one her yet. Therefore, she will need a physically secured fence yard to be able to do her potty duties the minute she arrives home. Carmina very much enjoys attention & likes to be held. Sometimes breeding dogs aren't comfortable with human touch, & we are happy to report that is just not the case with Carmina. This sweetheart is ready to find her family & settle in. She is an absolute gem that doesn't get into any trouble, loves everyone she meets, and just wants love! Please let us know if you have the perfect home to offer Carmina by sending us an email.
