Story
I am in a foster home and not at the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, submit an adoption questionnaire by email. Learn more hereKirby is checking off the good dog boxes! He is still a shy boy who’s going to need time to get to know you before you get all of those sweet Kirby snuggles, but we think it’s okay for some of our dogs to be more selective about their friends. Adorable face? &#226&#156&#133 Party Ear? &#226&#156&#133 House trained? &#226&#156&#133 Good with some Cats?? &#226&#156&#133 Kirby has been in a few different foster homes with different cats, and he's gotten along with some of them--with others, he's been a bit of a brat. If you have a confident cat who will stand up to him, and are willing to do a slow, careful introduction, they might get along fine! Foster mom reports: As first time fosters, we can say that Kirby is quite easy to deal with: he needed some time to adjust and settle down, but he is now very respectful of our daily routine. He is quite independent during the day while I work from home: he is learning to go to the backyard by himself and most of the day, he plays with/chews on his toys in between naps. He enjoys quick walks and play-time during my breaks and I love when he randomly just places his chin on my leg and looks at me with his puppy eyes, asking for attention (it happens quite often and it's just so cute). He has also learnt that, when it gets dark outside and he hears steps out of the door, there is no need to bark or get alarmed, as it's my partner coming home from work and he welcomes them with the happiest dance ever. He would do great in a quiet place with one/some working-from-home humans as a solo-dog. If you are interested in adopting him, you will get a dog with his own personal brand, as we have just home-brewed a few IPAs and printed Kirby labels!  As one of his former fosters wrote: “My favorite Kirby activity, second to snuggling, was watching him play catch with himself. He would bounce his favorite ball for himself, off the floor and straight into his mouth. His joy is contagious!”  He also was easy going in a foster home with cats previously.  Want to get in on that joy, but not totally sure about adoption? Kirby has been selected for our pilot foster-to-adopt program. You can keep Kirby out of the shelter, and see if he might be the right fit for you! A smaller guy at 32 pounds, Kirby is only about 3 years old, and he needs to be the only dog in the home. Want to know more about Kirby? Email us at adoption@oaklandsanimals.org! Story
07/05/24 23:11DOG DAY OUT REPORT FROM LAST WEEK:Today I: Got to go on a long walk with a new friend! I needed a little help getting in the car, but I loved the ride and watching my friends in the front seat. We went to the park where we saw lots of people and animals – dogs, geese, squirrels, rabbits. They were cool, but I was way more excited for my walk. I relaxed in the shade for a bit when I needed a break, but I kept going because it was so fun.Three Words to Describe Me are: Sweet, Well-mannered, CuriousNotes from My Walker: Missy is so well-behaved on walks. She showed no reactivity to people, other dogs, geese and squirrels. She was intrigued by the rabbits, but that’s understandable. She’s a great friend – if you fall behind on your walk, she’ll check in on you. She was comfortable in the car, although she was a little excited at first. With a little more training, Missy would be a great hiking partner. She also loves pets and snuggles and has the softest ears. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Missy is such a gorgeous, sweet girl! She can be barky in her kennel, but don’t let that deter you! Come meet her outside her kennel! Outside of her kennel, she is a sweetheart who doesn’t bark. She’s affectionate and absolutely loves a good sniffy walk and checking out all the smells. She has a sensitive neck for leashes so we recommend a harness for her. She walks nicely on a harness and enjoys a leisurely pace. Missy is sensitive to loud noises and would love a quiet home. She’s dog friendly and participates in doggie playgroups. Come meet Missy!05/10/24 08:16DOG DAY OUT REPORT WEEK OF 5/10/24 Today I: Got to go for a looong hike and see so many new things! First, I met two new friends and they took me for a car ride – I LOVE car rides! Except they had to remind me to stay in the back seat where I am safest, but that’s ok, I got a cookie! On my walk I saw people, dogs, and bikes and they don’t bother me at all. But then we saw so many geese and ducks! And they looked FUN, but my humans put some space between me and the geese, but that’s ok, again, cookies! Walking on a trail is so nice, I checked in with my friends, and I asked for cookies, and I learned a new game – touch! When I touch my nose to my friend’s hand, I get a cookie! That’s a great game!Three Words to Describe Me are: Joyful – Energetic - AffectionateNot
