Story
Lucy (ACCT-A-244881) is a 5-year-old Cane Corso who was surrendered to ACCT Philly when her owner was no longer able to care for or walk her due to their own health issues. Despite the sudden change in her life, Lucy arrived at the shelter showing just how affectionate and people-oriented she can be. During intake she greeted staff with wagging tails and eagerly sought out pets and attention. In her previous home, Lucy lived with adults, another dog, and a cat. Her former owner described her as a loving dog who enjoys being around children, gets along with other dogs, and even likes cats. She is reportedly housebroken, crate trained, and knows commands like “sit,” “come here,” and “lay down.” Lucy has a playful, energetic side and especially enjoys running outside, chasing birds, and playing with toys. Since arriving at the shelter, Lucy has shown that she enjoys moments of activity, like short bursts of running after a ball in the yard, but the shelter environment can feel overwhelming for her at times. Volunteers note that while she can be a bit unsure in new spaces, she has also allowed gentle affection and scratches and has shown curiosity and playfulness during outings. Lucy may benefit from a patient adopter who can give her time to settle in and decompress while helping her regain confidence. With space to run, enrichment, and a loving home, Lucy has the potential to thrive. 📽️Videos📽️ ▪️Lucy's short bursts of energy, running after the ball: https://youtube.com/shorts/rnxbA7A008U?si=FztS0K33kIrmBYh- ▪️Playgroup 3/11 Lucy, Daria: https://youtu.be/rS5dc_K4-X4?si=hGlRKkPkvmTxk3S2 ⭐Behavioral Notes⭐ Per volunteer 3/13: Lucy hadn't been out in a couple days, so I wanted to give her some time outside. When I opened the kennel door shutter, my lease, she retreated to the backside of the kennel. She wasn't interested in any the treats I tossed and didn't come forward. I lowered the divider, stepped in and looped her to get her to come forward. She misjudged the step, so when she stepped down, she wobbled. Lucy did not appear to be comfortable in the small yard. She was looking to exit. She showed no interest in treats or toys. She's supposed to be housetrained, but she didn't relieve herself. She just paced in the yard. I took her back to her kennel, but returned a little later to take her out again. I had no issue leasing her this time, she came right to the front and allowed herself to be leashed. We went to a larger yard, and she actually had small bursts playful running after a ball. And she did come to me a couple of times and allowed some scratches on her back. She still wasn't comfortable and she pushes on the the gate to leave. I had no issues returning to her kennel. Playgroup Notes 3/11: Lip licking, stiff at the gate, avoidant, open mouth, panting, mid level tail, Fearful 03/10/2026 per staff: She's very sweet. Story
Meet sweet Michaela (ACCT-A-237403)! This senior lady was surrendered to the shelter along with her sister, Bella (ACCT-A-237402), when their owner's health declined and he could no longer care for them. The owner recommended that Michaela and Bella stay together. Michaela is about 70lb and 9 years old. In the shelter, Michaela has been goofy and snuggly! She loves pets and attention and follows her sister around for comfort. She's had a good dog meet and, per her owner surrender notes, is "Great with children, good with strangers, okay with cats and dogs". She loves rope toys and treats and is already crate trained, housebroken, and knows some commands! Videos: Pets for Bella and Michaela: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/rmNtDYgy3Uw Michaela and Snuggle R: https://youtu.be/XRE4EHoecx8?si=cGwfnxj6b-AEvjrb Michaela and Snuggle R: https://youtu.be/HSovzG7QUsM?si=98yJ72yw2uD4QezX Behavior: Behavior eval 11/22/2025 Kennel Presentation: Stood at the front of her kennel with soft eyes and a loose body, low wagging tail. Took a treat gently through the kennel. Leash Skills: Easy to leash and walk out through the adoption lobby. Minimal pulling, went to the bathroom when outside. Sociability: Social with handler, soliciting attention and allowing handling all over. In the volunteer office, she and her sister went from person to person asking for treats and pets. Michaela was not as jumpy as Bella, asking for treats more gently. She remained loose and wiggly, loving pets all over and leaning in. Play: N/A Dog Interaction: Very comfortable with her sister. Loose body and followed each other around. When Bella reacted to another dog from afar, Michaela seemed to follow her lead a bit (barking toward the dog), but her reaction was smaller (no hackles or pulling) and she calmed down more quickly. Return to Kennel: Stopped briefly outside of her kennel, walked right in with a treat scatter. Easy to unleash Color Level: Gold Recommendations and considerations: Per owner 11/20/25 (Surrendered after 9 years along with Bella due to owner's health problems): The owner recommended that both dogs stay together. Fully housebroken, crate trained, medium energy, knows commands: yes, sit, lay down. Enjoys rope toys. Great with children, good with strangers, okay with cats and dogs. Owner recommended a "good family" ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia. We are open for adoptions 7 days a week. Please visit www.acctphilly.org/adopt for details.
