Story
Ginger is a happy, spirited girl who’s ready to find her forever home! With lots of love to give, she’s full of personality and charm, making her the perfect companion for an active family. Ginger’s favorite activities include playing fetch, going on hikes, and romping around with her large canine companion. She would probably prefer not to hang out at a restaurant or brewery and would prefer to explore. She also loves soaking up vitamin D from any cozy spot in the yard. This treat-motivated pup enjoys the simple joys of life, like snuggling with her stuffies and chewing on delicious cheese sticks. She’s also a foodie at heart and loves any type of food, especially veggies (and sometimes will beg)! While Ginger may not be a fan of sharing her food, being picked up, or hugs (she might not be a super snuggler), she has so much affection to offer. She has been social with other dogs and polite to new humans.Ginger knows basic commands like “sit” and “down,” seems potty trained, and is crate trained ( she sleeps in her crate at night) . She’s currently perfecting her leash skills and learning her house manners, making her a great match for her new family who are ready to give her the love, and guidance she deserves. If you’re looking for a loyal friend who’s ready for adventures and cozy evenings, Ginger is the one for you! Could you be her forever home?

Story
Marcia! Marcia! Marcia! Marcia is one of 10 siblings from our Mal-y Bunch! Marcia, or River as she's luvingly known by her foster family, is a sweet, happy, very smart and driven 4 month old Malinois x German Shepherd mix who weighs around 25 lbs. She is fostered with other dogs, ranging in age from 3 years old to 10 years old. Marcia was socialized with kids when she was younger but hasn't since she's started coming into herself so we recommend a home with dog-experienced kids since Marcia will need some help understanding how to play with them. This gem of a pup luvs to luv and bonds quickly with her person or persons, is eager to learn and please, and is working on her basic commands. Marcia will thrive in a home where she can be your hiking or adventure buddy, working dog, or sport dog. What her foster mom says about her - "She is a fun, floppy, slightly derpy version of her mom! She is full of sass, kisses, and love 💙" Marcia's story - Their mama was surrendered to the shelter the day before she gave birth. The very next day she welcomed 9 beautiful puppies. The shelter is no place for any dog, let alone a mom and her new puppies. Thanks to an amazing foster, we were able to quickly rescue mama + all 10 puppies! All Mutt Luv dogs/puppies come vaccinated, microchipped, s/n, heartworm tested, and with a clean bill of health from our vet.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Gentle-hearted ShepherdCoco is a 2.5 year-old Malinois / German Shepherd mix who weighs approximately 78lbs.  Coco is just a sweet, gentle-hearted boy. Curious, goofy, loving, and energetic - he loves everyone, and sees the best in them. Coco currently lives with two older 4-legged brothers and, while he would love to live with a fur-sibling, he is not part of a bonded pair. As long as he has fur friends to play with, Coco will be a happy boy! When playing with his human pals, Coco is very verbally responsive and wants to please. He knows several commands and loves to play complex games with his toys. When he gets a bit over-stimulated, he puts himself into a timeout under his foster family's kitchen table to rest and reset! Sweet Coco has been perfectly house trained since day one, loves car rides, loves to go for walks and is learning not to pull in excitement when he meets new friends - that is Everyone! Despite his size and youth, Coco does not need long hikes to manage his energy. 15-20 minutes a couple times a day and play sessions with his fur siblings are great exercise for Coco. Coco knows the benefit of "Sit", "Down" and "Touch" to get his favorite treats, and will benefit from continued positive reinforcement training. Check out Coco's profile on Rocky Kanaka! https://rockykanaka.com/one-leg-short-but-full-of-heart-a-german-shepherds-inspiring-escape-from-adversity/ Prior to adoption, all dogs are spayed/neutered, tested for heartworm, vaccinated (including rabies, if age appropriate) and microchipped.   Adoption fees for dogs: http://www.svpetproject.org/info/adoption Stay up-to-date on what our dogs are up to by following us on Facebook!  https://www.facebook.com/svpetproject Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 2, 2024, 3:54 pm

Story
09/24/2024 11:10 A.M.Sidney is part of a new partnership with RFRD Academy in San Jose. From them, she is developing her skills as she readies for her forever home. Her trainers delivered this report card: We are currently focusing on several key training areas: - Leash Pressure and Guidance: Sidney is learning to respond to leash pressure, which is helping her develop good walking habits.- Calmness at the Front Door: We are working on teaching Sidney to remain calm when entering and exiting the home, which will aid in managing her excitement.- Engagement: Sidney is an enthusiastic participant in training sessions, eager to learn and interact.- Basic Obedience Fundamentals: She is picking up essential commands and foundational skills quickly.- Crate Introductions: Sidney is adjusting well to crate training, starting to see it as a comfortable space.- Environmental Exposure: We are gradually introducing her to various environments to help her become more confident and adaptable.Overall, Sidney is a fun pup with a lot of drive, making her a joy to work with!Ideal Home/Adopter:Sidney would do best in a home without young children or small pets. She would thrive with a family that understands her breed genetics and is not a first-time pet owner. An active household that is confident in working with energetic dogs will be the perfect fit for Sidney, ensuring she receives the exercise and mental stimulation she needs to flourish.08/25/24 23:17DOG DAY OUT REPORT Today: my friend took me on a 6.5 mile jog around Shady Oaks Park, along Coyote Creek Trail and through Hellyer Industrial Park. I was so excited to go out that I was hopping around like Tigger as we got ready to go on our adventure. I was a bit nervous getting into the car, but my friend showed me what to do and after that, I was confident doing it on my own. On the trail, there were so many things to smell, I didn’t know what to do with myself - I was bouncing all over. There were lots of foxtails though, so we decided to jog for a while but once it was safe, my friend let me get in all the sniffs. There were a lot of distractions on our walk, and some I was nervous about, so my friend helped me through those moments. I also really enjoyed chasing all the squirrels. After our long jog, we cooled down in the shade, where I got treats and pets.Three Words to Describe Me are: Athletic, Sweet-natured, Vigilant

10/18/24 01:16Doggy Day Out ReportToday was so fun! My friend took me on a walk through a residential neighborhood and I loved checking everything out! There were so many things to see and smell! My friend said I walked nicely on the harness and that I was such a good girl. I showed off how pretty I can sit and how nicely I take treats. I love treats! My friend even started showing me new things like come and down. I like learning! We saw lots of dogs and I passed them politely. Squirrels are very interesting to me and I wanted to go check them out but my friend encouraged me to keep walking. I really loved my nice long walk, a break for cuddles at the park, and even a yummy bully stick on the ride home! What a great day!Three Words to Describe Me are: Adorable, Affectionate, SmartNotes from My Walker: Skylar sure is a cutie pie! She’s medium sized and estimated at a year old but has a permanent puppy face that is way too cute! We went for a long walk through Willow Glen and had a great time!Skylar walked nicely on the front clip harness and only pulled mildly towards squirrels – I agree, squirrels are fascinating! She loved to sniff and check everything out. We saw a lot of dogs and she passed them all politely. (At the shelter, she participates in doggie playgroups!) She was not reactive to anything – dogs, cars, people, strollers. She was startled a couple times at sudden movements or loud noises, but she recovered very quickly and was happy to continue on our walk.Skylar still has some puppyish manners like mouthing when I harnessed her and in the car, but she doesn’t apply any pressure. Overall, she was such a good girl and she will grow out of her mouthing in a home with regular exercise and socializing.Skylar is very food motivated and knows sit and loves to show it off for treats and she takes treats gently. She is a smart girl and was quickly understanding the commands come and down!Skylar is very affectionate and loves to crawl into your lap. We sat on the grass at a park and she was such a happy wiggly girl to get extra love. I really enjoyed my day with this adorable sweetheart! She will make someone a lovely companion.

Story
Meet Rocky! This handsome GSD mix came into the Shelter with another dog (who has since been adopted). Prior to Shelter life, Rocky hadn`t experienced much outside of his home. Understandably, arriving at the Shelter was a bit of a shock to the system. After some time and patience with staff and volunteers - Rocky began to show his true colors and was a goofy, playful boy. You can see him going on walks with volunteers or playing with other adoptable dogs at the Shelter. Rocky recently spent some time in a foster home with a couple and their family. The fosters report: `It took him a couple of days to warm up but he`s very comfortable and affectionate with us both now. We had a successful outting at a swimming hole. He swam across the river and had a great romp in the sand. He played nicely with a small dog and tolerated the presence of other people who kept their distance. We took him to the beach yesterday and he seemed to enjoy the surf and meeting another dog. He has started to learn sit and coming when called`. A home with a confident canine companion may be a fit but any potential suitors should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Rocky has lived in a home with children infant age to teenagers. A home with kids may be a fit. We do not have any history of Rocky in a home with cats or small animals.Come on in to meet your new BFF today at 1001 Rodriguez Street, Santa Cruz from 11-6pm. All adoptions are first come, first serve in person at the Shelter, and must be completed before 4:45pm.

Story
Meet Minnie Minshew, the German Shepherd! Minnie came into the Shelter after she was found as a stray in Anna Jean Cummins Park. She had been found by a good Samaritan chasing a car as it was driving away. This loyal Shepherd was a bit spooked when she first arrived but has slowly but surely been warming up to people. When comfortable with people, she paws softly at people for attention and gives the occasional kiss. Minnie Minshew is looking for a savvy adopter who will provide her a safe home to continue blossoming in. She has been a bit nervous meeting other dogs. Dogs that are boisterous and forward may be a bit much for Minnie but more neutral, dog-savvy dogs could be a fit. Any resident dogs are recommended to meet at the Shelter prior to adoption.Come on in to meet your new BFF today at 1001 Rodriguez Street, Santa Cruz from 11-6pm. Story
MEET KATIE & GRACE, two beautiful & bonded black German Shepherds! Both of these lovely girls were rescued from a scary California shelter, and given their time together, they are extremely bonded. We would really love to place them in a home together, and they need either a foster or forever home currently. Grace, the mama dog, is about 5-6 years old, and Katie is a 2-year-old girl now and growing up! Both girls love other dogs, and they are wonderful with people. They have also done fairly well around cats but would need to be monitored. Katie weighs about 60-65 lbs, and Grace weighs about 71-75 lbs. They've waited a long time for a home because we are trying to place them together, so if you can open your home to two dogs, please email for an application. We also offer discounted adoption fees for pairs.
