Story
Meet Bentley, the Malinois mix. Bentley came to the Shelter after his previous guardian was unable to continue caring for him. Bentley was described by his previous guardian as a sweet, sweet boy. He can be a little shy at first with new people but once he warms up – he sticks to his person and is described as a Velcro dog. At the Shelter, staff have observed that he walks nicely on leash, leans in for pets and almost wants to get into your lap for attention. Bentley has lived with other dogs previously and enjoyed interacting with them. A home with another dog may be a fit but they are recommended to meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. We do not have any history of Bentley in a home with children or cats. He has been around exotic birds who were caged in a previous home. Now through February 15th, we are hosting “Adopt Your Valentine” where adoption fees are reduced to $50. The adoption fee includes all age appropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter and microchips. Story
Meet Prince, the Malinois / Shepherd mix. Prince came to the Shelter as a stray. A good Samaritan had reported him hanging around and wanted him to be safe. Animal control went out and brought him to safety. Upon arrival to the Shelter, Prince was observed to be shy but quickly warmed up, primarily in the presence of other dogs. He brightens up and really shows his adolescent, playful self when around other dogs – romping around, interacting with new people and over-all a totally different dog. When comfortable, staff describe him as melting into them when petting. Due to the positive effect other dogs have on Prince – a home with another dog is highly recommended for Prince. With force free training and patience, Prince will be your future “prince charming”. Now through February 15th, we are hosting “Adopt Your Valentine” where adoption fees are reduced to $50. The adoption fee includes all age appropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter and microchips. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Story
Meet Moddy, the female Malinois mix. Moody came into the Shelter as a stray found out of county by a good Samaritan. The good Samaritan held onto her for two nights and observed that she did well riding in the car, played with another dog and did not have any accidents in the care of this good sam. At the Shelter, staff have observed that Moddy is energetic and affliative with people. She has demonstrated some wanderlust. When out in the exercise yards (with 6 foot chain link fences), Moddy has, impressively jumped the fences and gone to say “hi” to other people and dogs. With her energy level as well as the observed escape tendencies – Moddy will need a dog savvy guardian that will keep her safe when she is not securely indoors as well as above average mental and physical stimulation. We do not have any history of Moddy with cats or children. Story
Meet Lucy, a beautiful and charismatic 1 y/o Mal mix! We rescued Lucy from a high-kill shelter in LA with less than 1 hour left before she was to be euthanized - all because she had developed an upper respiratory infection at the shelter. Lucy is a happy-go-lucky girl with a strong but gentle demeanor who LUVs and plays hard. This babe is athletic and brave but also affectionate, curious, and dignified. Lucy will need a home that can match her activity level. She thrives when she has a job - whether that's training, a game of fetch, or helping her foster dad work and run errands. She LUVs going on hikes, bike rides and skateboading with her foster dad, learning and mastering new skills, and socializing. Lucy is a frequent guest at local coffee shops where she enjoys hanging out while her foster dad works. Lucy joined our Rescue Director and her dogs after leaving the shelter. She did great with her foster fur siblings, playing and lounging around with them, and with other dogs she meets on her adventures. She loves nothing more than to be by her persons side. This babe has it going on! Her brains and beauty aid in maiking her the pawfect companion. We haven't been able to test her with kids yet so for the time being, we're recommending she goes to a home with older, calmer kids who are experienced with dogs. If you are an experienced dog owner and have younger kids, and are interested in meeting her, please send us a message, we'd love to talk with you more! If you are looking for a babe to be your adventure buddy and is sweet, confident, and a loyal best furiend, look no further - Lucy's your girl! Ready to fall in LUV? Fill out an app or message us today!

10/18/24 01:16Doggy Day Out ReportToday was so fun! My friend took me on a walk through a residential neighborhood and I loved checking everything out! There were so many things to see and smell! My friend said I walked nicely on the harness and that I was such a good girl. I showed off how pretty I can sit and how nicely I take treats. I love treats! My friend even started showing me new things like come and down. I like learning! We saw lots of dogs and I passed them politely. Squirrels are very interesting to me and I wanted to go check them out but my friend encouraged me to keep walking. I really loved my nice long walk, a break for cuddles at the park, and even a yummy bully stick on the ride home! What a great day!Three Words to Describe Me are: Adorable, Affectionate, SmartNotes from My Walker: Skylar sure is a cutie pie! She’s medium sized and estimated at a year old but has a permanent puppy face that is way too cute! We went for a long walk through Willow Glen and had a great time!Skylar walked nicely on the front clip harness and only pulled mildly towards squirrels – I agree, squirrels are fascinating! She loved to sniff and check everything out. We saw a lot of dogs and she passed them all politely. (At the shelter, she participates in doggie playgroups!) She was not reactive to anything – dogs, cars, people, strollers. She was startled a couple times at sudden movements or loud noises, but she recovered very quickly and was happy to continue on our walk.Skylar still has some puppyish manners like mouthing when I harnessed her and in the car, but she doesn’t apply any pressure. Overall, she was such a good girl and she will grow out of her mouthing in a home with regular exercise and socializing.Skylar is very food motivated and knows sit and loves to show it off for treats and she takes treats gently. She is a smart girl and was quickly understanding the commands come and down!Skylar is very affectionate and loves to crawl into your lap. We sat on the grass at a park and she was such a happy wiggly girl to get extra love. I really enjoyed my day with this adorable sweetheart! She will make someone a lovely companion.

Story
4 year old spayed female. Adopted her at 10 weeks. This has been her only home. Acquired her from a local breeder. She was originally adopted for my exes son, but Charlie stayed with me when they moved. I no longer have the time and resources to give her the time and attention she needs. She is playful and loves fetch, loves company, and has a lot of energy. She gets along fine with smaller dogs and cats. She hasn't been around bigger dogs much, so I am not sure how she would respond, but on the trails, she is curious to play with the other bigger dogs, but is not sure how, if that makes sense.. I think with more exposure to big dogs, she will adjust fine. She has never been aggressive to any other pet or person. No health issues. I am looking for someone who has the time and resources to care for her in the way she is meant to and totally deserves. Preferably someone with GSD experience, but also open to someone who feels they are ready to take on a big dog that loves to be active.
