Story

We adopted Nellie in 2020 from the Irvine Animal Care Center. The volunteers believed she was 12 years old at the time we adopted her. Nellie is a reactive dog but came trained from her previous owner(s). We had two cats at the time but she acclimated to them after a few weeks. We were very active with Nellie; we took her on daily morning runs, and would go on hikes and walks in the surrounding areas. In 2022, we had our first son and Nellie began to exhibit anxious behavior. As our son has gotten older and more mobile, we worry about her behavior around him. Nellie will thrive from an owner who can continue an active lifestyle with her and give her the attention she craves. She is sweet, smart, affectionate, and as loyal a dog can be; managing her and our son has just become too challenging for two full-time working parents and we feel we’re not giving Nellie what she needs to succeed.

Nettie is a stunning, 1 year old Belgian Malinois that was found running loose and scared. A couple people were able to catch her, and brought her in to the shelter. Unfortunately her owners never came to claim her during her hold. So now she is up for adoption! Nettie quickly became a popular girl here at the shelter, as almost every volunteer seems to be in love with her. She just LOVES to play ball, and even brings it back to you to throw. When her tennis balls get too dirty, she goes over to the water bowls to clean them off. Such a smart girl! Nettie loves her long walks and jogs with the volunteers, and any time they spend cuddling with her in her run. When she first came to the shelter, it was clear Nettie had never been socialized with other dogs. She was fearful of them and would become reactive. Little by little she got better passing dogs on her walks. Eventually she was able to move to an outdoor run that shared a fence with other dogs. Nettie began ding play bows! This was a new side to Nettie we had never seen, in her time here she ended up sort of desensitizing herself to the other dogs. So we loaded her up and dropped her off at board and train for 2 weeks so she could learn how to properly socialize with other dogs! Nettie did AMAZING!! and now she loves to play with other pups! Watching her run around the yard with anywhere from 8 to 12 dogs at training, with the biggest smile on her face, was just the proof that we made the right call in sending her over. Now she is back at the shelter and even has a roommate to spend her days playing with!! Nettie would make a great companion in a single dog home, however, it is clear that she would LOVE to go home with another medium to large sized dog. While she loves people, Nettie is NOT comfortable around children. She is scared of them and reacts negatively. If she were to go home to a family with kids, they would need to be 16 years or older. The shelter would have the final say on if Nettie was comfortable enough to go home to kids of that age as well, after meeting. She is a beautiful girl with stunning coloring. I was one of the lucky pregnant doggies brought into a Good Samaritan foster in Mexico where I gave birth to 6 pups. All of my pups have been adopted in LA now. When we finally found and spoke to the family, they said they left the side gates open so Leona could go "free." Thankfully, Leona stayed put all that time. Leona is a beautiful 2-year-old spayed female pup who is laid-back, submissive, and friendly. She had lived all her life in the backyard, so we had to teach her everything from the beginning. After being in our foster home for a couple of months, she has blossomed into the sweetest companion. She’s affectionate, cuddly, calm, and happy, with a gentle demeanor. Leona gets along with men, women, kids, and both dogs and cats. She is smart and eager to learn, quickly mastering some basic commands. Leona has received a thorough vet check-up and has a clean bill of health. At 75 lbs, she’s fully vaccinated and has tested negative for heartworm, parasites, and other conditions. We’ve had Nala for about 3 ½ years, and she’s approximately 4 years old we got her from a relative. She is a purebred female German Shepherd. Nala lived with us and a small female Chihuahua, and they got along just fine. She has been through training recently for a board and train for the last month and a half, and we were told she did well with other dogs and that everyone loved her. However, Nala does have anxiety; initially, she will bark a lot, but once you pet her, she calms down. We haven’t had her around many dogs, so we can’t say for certain how she interacts with them, but her trainer mentioned she did fine and explained that her anxiety stems from low confidence. Nala is a very loving and intelligent dog. Unfortunately, we’ve had to move to a small apartment and can no longer keep her. It’s a heartbreaking decision, but our priority is to find her a loving home where she will be happy and well cared for.
