Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Introducing Payara, a sleek and shimmering domestic shorthair grey/silver tabby who glides through life with the quiet grace of a fish in tranquil waters. Like the river-dwelling vampire fish she’s named after, Payara has an air of mystery and elegance that makes her utterly captivating.
Payara’s personality is a bit like a deep ocean treasure: hidden beneath the surface but worth every moment of discovery. She’s a shy little minnow at first, preferring to keep to herself while she observes the currents of her surroundings. However, with patience and gentle encouragement, she blossoms into the most delightful companion—a cat who truly hooks your heart.
Once Payara warms up, she’s as affectionate as a school of clownfish in an anemone. She adores curling up in your lap, her soft purrs creating a soothing melody, and she’ll happily drift into cuddle mode for hours. One of her favorite rituals is receiving booty scratches, which make her wiggle and squirm with joy like a fish darting through waves.
Payara gets along swimmingly with people who appreciate her gentle nature and are willing to let her come out of her shell at her own pace. Her silvery tabby coat is as mesmerizing as sunlight glinting off water, and her affectionate personality makes her the pearl of any home.
If you’re ready to cast your net for the ultimate feline friend, Payara is waiting to make a splash in your life.
Meet and greet/adoption appointments are highly recommended to ensure the animal you are interested in is currently at the shelter. Please call or e-mail the shelter to set up an appointment to meet and adopt!
DON'T FORGET! Cats often do better with a friend! All our cats and kittens have an "Adopt one and the 2nd at half the adoption fee!" bonus!!!
Our kitten/cat adoption fees vary on age, special needs, lonely heart status (cats that have been with us 6+ months), and for our senior to seniors program. Our adoption fees include the following: all of our cats/kittens are current on vaccinations (FVRCP series and Rabies if over 3 months of age) at the point of adoption, dewormed, tested for Feline Leukemia (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), treated for fleas/ticks/earmites in addition to being spayed or neutered once the cat reaches 2 lbs in weight. All cats and kittens adopted from the shelter are microchipped. Adoption fees may vary in special circumstances.
Because we are on a busy street, we require that all cats leaving the shelter be in a carrier. All pets are up for adoption until an approved application is processed and their adoption fee is paid.

More about this shelter
BRHS formed in 1998 to help the Brookings Animal Control Department find homes for stray animals. The unclaimed, homeless cats and dogs from Animal Control are BRHS' priority. Those unclaimed are transferred to BRHS where they get the necessary wellness care and are spayed/neutered. Animal Control brings any sick or injured animals to BRHS for immediate care.
In 2013 BRHS was very fortunate to move into its present location across from the Brookings Airport. The building was built specifically to house animals and provides a separate dog kennel area, rooms to house cats, natural lighting, and proper ventilation throughout the whole facility. There are also medical isolation, quarantine, treatment, and surgery rooms.
BRHS has been recognized for and has won multiple awards from both city and national organizations, including several Dog Rescue Awards and a nomination for the Governor’s Award.
