“Cookies. A pin. I’m getting all kinds of gifts today.” Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games
Introducing Katniss!
When Katniss came to our program from a local open-admissions shelter, she was due to give birth at any moment. Here we are, months later, with eight weaned “Hunger Games” pups and one sweet mama Katniss ready for her own chance at a forever.
Katniss is a big girl, weighing in at 90 pounds at around one year old. Her ideal weight is likely 90-95 pounds, with some shimmy room around the upper end.
Housebreaking, Crate-Training, and Commands
Katniss is housebroken! She hasn’t had any accidents in the house or her crate, and while she doesn’t have a ‘signal’, she happily holds it until she’s taken outside. She does great on a schedule!
Katniss is also crate-trained. Though she initially puts up the occasional, quick fuss (because hello, the fun is happening outside the crate!), she’ll go inside with the lure of a treat. She eats her meals in the crate and stays in the crate when her foster family isn’t home.
This smart girl knows “sit”, “lay down”, and “touch”!
Behavior around other Dogs, Cats, and Kids
Katniss lives in a home with other dogs, cats, and children. She does wonderful around all three!
Despite her size, Katniss is actually a bit afraid of the cats in the home, and she does her best to stay out of their way. Now, she LOVES her kids in the home. She’s a little unaware of her size so her foster mom is working on keeping all four paws on the ground, but she’s doing a great job and will happily take snuggles and playtime from her kiddos.
She’s also done beautifully with other dogs! Again, she seems to be a bit confused by her side, so a more patient dog in the home will likely serve her well while she figures out her own long legs.
Behavior around People
Katniss wants to be everyone’s friend! Once she gets past the initial stranger danger, she wants everyone to put her and give her love! She is so excited to cuddle with her people, but will be independent when necessary -- especially if it’s lazing around with her people in the same room with her.
Exercise Needs
Though she’s a big girl, it seems that Katniss doesn’t have too much energy to burn. A few walks a day and some fetch is all this girl needs before she’s content to chew on a toy or cuddle up for a nap. Foster mom shares the only thing they haven’t tried is running -- everything else is game!
Katniss is a great big girl with a lot of love to give. Do you have room in your home for a girl like her? Contact us today!
