Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Romey is a very gentle, timid soul. He was very frightened when I first received him. During the first 24 hours, he stayed under the kitchen table and snapped at me when I tried to coax him out. Leaving him alone, he eventually ventured out and began socializing with my husband and I and our other three dogs. He does not actively play with our other dogs, although he does tolerate them quite well. He definitely is not an alpha male as he tends to hang back and feeding time, perfectly happy to be fed last.
He is not much for playing with toys although he does like to play chase with my husband. This is generally during the morning hours and only with my husband. He previously lived with a single older male, therefore he bonded very well with my husband at first, but eventually warmed up to me as well.
He loves walks! During the first two days of his arrival, just getting the leash out perked him up! He walks very well on a leash: it is quite apparent that he has been leash trained and has been walked extensively during his lifetime. During walks, he is aggressive towards persons on bikes or skateboards, however. I simply keep him away from them. He never is bothered by people or other dogs during walks as he basically ignores them.
We have had some problems with urination in the house, but it has been due to his excessive water intake due to the diabetes. He potties outside when taken out, but will urinate in the house if not taken out every 3 hours at a minimum. That being said, I have had only 3 accidents in the house in the past 3 weeks. I consider that excellent under his circumstances. As the diabetes gets under control, I do not expect any accidents from Romey.
Other observations:
He loves to ride in cars and will sit quietly during the entire ride.
His appetite is very good. He currently eats twice per day, once in the morning and once in the evening.
He tolerates his grooming mostly well. He gets impatient when doing his legs and face.
He does get on furniture but does not like to sit in laps and be cuddled. He prefers sitting next to me and being petted. In fact, if you don't pet him, he's been known to bark a couple of times to get petted!
He is not very vocal unless someone comes to the door. Loud noises do not seem to bother him. He does, however, sometimes barks 5-10 times for no reason at all. I haven't figured out what triggers that, if anything. :)
He does not beg at the table for food.
He likes to be brushed on his back, but he does not like his legs to be brushed and will pull back.
Romey knows basic commands such as sit, stay, give a paw.
Does not necessarily need to sleep on the bed. He is perfectly happy in his bed as long as it is in the bedroom. Has sometimes asked to be put in bed towards morning and will lay at the end of the bed.
Medical: Diabetes (controlled with insulin), allergic to flea bites
